Freecycle Again!

MegaPhone · 15/01/2009 00:41

Just seen these two messages on my freecycle...

"Wanted - A big TV. I'm finding it difficult to afford things at the moment so if anyone has one, please email me. Thanks"

Then from the same poster...

"Wanted - A big TV stand. I may be getting a big TV soon and will need a stand to put it on, if anyone has one, please email me"

AIBU to find this a bit cheeky/odd?

What a loony!

SparklyGothKat · 15/01/2009 00:51

pmsl yet when lisad asked for a double buggy for someone she works with, she was told that 'no-one should 'need' an item'

jennybensmummy · 15/01/2009 13:10

ha ha its loony isnt it!! i am a mod on my local freecycle and we remove and reference to not having the money for something, single parents, disability, need etc etc as we feel that noone should feel that they should give to someone as they "need" it and as you dont know if its lies or not then its tough!! however i do leave odd ones in as i think they are amusing and just to be nasty!!!! for example the other day i left in when someone said they needed a pda preferably new and modern as they had a bad back and couldnt carry a diary around!!!!! what madness is that!!!

laweaselmys · 15/01/2009 13:17

lol!! I love the pda one.

scarletlilybug · 15/01/2009 13:23

There's one woman on our lacl group whose "sister" is always "just about to have a baby". She must have been pregnant for at least a couple of years now....

I do find the cheek and dishonesty of certain freecyle users infuriating - it puts me off offereing items there, tbh. I know some people argue that it's all about reducing landfill... but personally, I'd rather my no-longer-needed goods went to someone who actually needed them, rather than enriching some fraudster. Even if it is with items I no longer need. JMO.

frogs · 15/01/2009 13:25

Bit silly anyway, as large CRT tellies seem to be ten a penny on freecycle (presumably people upgrading to flatscreen).

ChopsTheDuck · 15/01/2009 13:27

the guy on ours that drives me nuts keeps posting asking for an xbox 360 to 'get his 5yo son started off on'.

Strangely, no one has helped him out yet!

MaggsS · 15/01/2009 13:33

Someone asked for an ipod the other day.

We are always getting requests for video cameras, x-boxes and even the other day a Wii

Tamarto · 15/01/2009 13:45

The only time i bother with my local Freecycle is when i read threads like this, just to see if it still full of wanted ads. It seems to be 90% wanted and 10% offered. Some of the wanteds do make me laugh.

laweaselmys · 15/01/2009 13:51

I love how some of them are bizarely specific -
"a victorian washstand for x's hall." wtf? If I had one of those floating around I'd be keeping the antique or selling it not giving it to you to decorate your hallway!

DustyTv · 15/01/2009 15:38

Someone on our local freecycle site posted a wanted add for a house, anything considered

wotulookinat · 15/01/2009 15:40

someone on my local group has moved house at least three times in the past six months, and must have at least 10 kids under 10. Methinks she is ebaying...

eandz · 15/01/2009 15:48

actually the pda one shouldn't be laughed at too much because the person may have a severely debilitating arthritic condition which requires constant appointments with the gp, or the rheumatologist.

only saying this because it's why i need to have a blackberry.

now, anyone have any idea how to un stick a stuck tracking ball on my bb curve? i accidentally spilled coffee all over it one afternoon.

solidgoldsoddingjanuaryagain · 15/01/2009 15:49

I like our local version-of as you're allowed to ask for 'swaps' ie not cash but other goods and people do for instance swap a telly for a bookcase, or a pile of baby clothes for a coffee percolator or whatever. But lots of people swap stuff for chocolates or wine, which seems fair enough to me.
I have swapped loads of empty cardboard boxes for bottles of wine.

wotulookinat · 15/01/2009 15:53

We're not allowed to do swaps on ours there are times when I would happily swap many things for wine - DS and DH included.

kitbit · 15/01/2009 16:31

Why aren't you allowed to offer swaps? Surely that's also in the spirit and saves doing 2 ads? And it shows the giver that you're genuine if you're prepared to give something back?

wotulookinat · 15/01/2009 16:33

I'm not sure why - the moderator has decided it.

isittooearlyforgin · 17/01/2009 23:13

worulookinat - i so know where you're coming from!!

These mod responses to unreasonable "wanted" threads on my local Freecycle made me lol lol LOL

IdrisTheDragon · 17/01/2009 23:36

Can't read the messages on your Freecycle as I'm not where you are .

IdrisTheDragon · 17/01/2009 23:37

Just go the digest for my local one and there is someone who would like wii games and a wii fit board if anyone has one

ThePlanningCommittee · 17/01/2009 23:47

Oops sorry Idris - cut'n'paste coming up:

1. Mod tries gentle humour & reason
POST TITLE: WANTED: Moon on a Stick
"Hello.

Can people PLEASE try and keep the WANTED posts for ridiculously expensive things down to a minimal level. It simply annoys people on
this list (we get a LOT of complaints) and could cause this list to lose a lot of its most valued members and therefore posts.

Think before you post and stop being ridiculous.

Thanks,
Rich, your friendly Administrator."

...a couple of weeks later...

2. Mod loses it
POST TITLE: TWO Moons on a gold stick, plus dishwasher
"A DISHWASHER?

WHAT?

You're skint, so you're advertising for a dishwasher? Do you even understand how much water and electricity these things consume? Forget the environmental impact and all that crap.... do you not think that money has to PAY for that somehow? And if you're skint, how are you going to pay for that?

Sometimes the lack of forethought and logic here is incredible.

Also, can people please stop asking for the moon on a stick as it's pissing people off.

Thanks
Your friendly mod team.
x"
