I'd rather my baby be exposed to a different accent than foul language.

Dh and I live in South and have Southern accents as does our CM but DD still says 'coome on moommy' with a proper Northern accent. BIL and his family from Carlisle were very impressed when they heard it. I have no idea where she got it from but I love it and think its really cute!

Gosh, yanbu at all that must be a terrible disappointment to you. However one must always try to find a silver lining in every cloud. Hopefully your dc is learning other subjects alongside the dialect coaching. Further, things could be much worse, your dc could be learning foul language at home whereas at least if he or she is at nursery he or she is avoiding at least a few hours of such exposure a day.

upnorth · 22/01/2009 18:16

Just moved from the South to the North and it's wonderful up here - Can't understand a word of what anyone says to me mind you but at least people now think my daughters are "posh" due to their accent!

After listening to Radio 4's PM this evening, I think that the OP must be a close relative of Beryl Bainbridge! She was on about how the Liverpudlian accent is a sign of a lack of education and ignorance! A very well reasoned and completely rational arguement ...... not!

DoThisDoThat · 22/01/2009 19:21

Redazzy, I disagree. Beryl Bainbridge rocks! And she wasn't actually saying that, she was saying how the liverpudlian accent is an affectation and there's no need for it as it could lead SOME PEOPLE to suspect someone with such a strong accent is lacking in education. And they are right in many cases. To paraphrase, what she said "an educated person can listen to themselves and correct their pronunciation".

I am Scottish and can no longer abide the Edinburgh accent in particular - it's got VERY common over the past few years. Not necessary. Ken what I mean, hen?

Right, off to bed. See how many flamers in the morning.

Love and kisses to y'all.
