electrical goods. I think we should keep the boxes for a while until we know it's not going to blow up in our faces.

dh thinks boxes get in the way and s for England if they are not ripped up and put in the recycling IMMEDIATELY.

We had the most pathetic row today with him standing over our new kettle letting it boil ONCE to prove it works before throwing its box away after I told him to keep it for a bit

hmmm I'm kind of with your dh here.I like to get rid of the boxes but my dh keeps them.I think with laptops and stuff I keep for a while then chuck.Kettle I'd just keep the receipt.

lol though at pathetic row..

chopchopbusybusy · 30/12/2008 23:37

You don't need to keep the boxes, just the receipt.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 30/12/2008 23:39

Your being a bit hoard-y. I hate keeping boxes. finding somewhere to put the stuff that came in the boxes is hard enough without having to find somewhere for the box too.

oneplusone · 30/12/2008 23:39

yep i chuck boxes asap, DH keeps them. We both keep the receipts though.

Niecie · 30/12/2008 23:40

I am with you but I do try to resist the urge with low value things because if it didn't work the shop shouldn't be bothered about the box - they couldn't sell it - and I do tend to keep receipts as proof of purchase.

For bigger things I hide the boxes in the garage

ScottishMummy · 30/12/2008 23:42

depends on definition of a while!days-ok.years no!i do keep receipt,in file all purchases by month bought

BoccaDellaVerita · 30/12/2008 23:42

My aim is to get the packaging into the recycling box asap. It's the receipt you need as proof of purchase.

thumbwitch · 30/12/2008 23:42

i agree with you OP - but I tend to keep the boxes too long so need a bit of organisation! Not as bad as my parents though - they still had boxes of things that had died and gone to the great Tip in the sky!

Oovavu · 30/12/2008 23:43

oh, ok then..... I am being hoard-y.

(although he was still being an arse before. I told him he'll need all the boxes for somewhere to sleep tonight )

dh insists on keeping boxes for all things electrical so when (if ever) we move house, we'll have the right box to move the object in my opinion is, so a moving company won't ever have packed electrical items before and won't have any boxes that will fit, no?

but then i like to keep the boxes for ds' toys so that when i get round to flogging them in a years time at a nearly new sale, they are in the right box with all the bits and hopefully sell better. DH in turn thinks this is mad...

just as well we have a large loft...

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 31/12/2008 00:03

am also at scottishmummy's organisational abilities and at oovavu coming up with such a great putdown line ... i never think of great lines like that in the middle of a row...

wrinklytum · 31/12/2008 00:05

DP is the hoarder,I'm the chucker outer.Keep the receipts/bank statementsWe have similar rows but in reverse IYSWIM:O

solidgoldstuffingballs · 31/12/2008 00:09

If the boxes are decent and sturdy you can freecyle them in exchange for bottles of wine. Honest! I do this quite a lot (ie people who are moving house or want to store stuff want good solid boxes and don't mind giving you a bottle of wine in exchange).

ScottishMummy · 31/12/2008 00:11

oki have annual file i keep receipts in.file all my stuff quite methodically

kickassangel · 31/12/2008 00:13

if you order off internet & might need to post it back, quite a good idea to keep the box for a few days/weeks until you've checked everything. kettle is fairly simple, if it works, it works. keep the receipt but otherwise unlikely to go wrong.

kickassangel · 31/12/2008 00:15

scottish mummy, i applaud you. i don't work atm, and boy, am i getting organised. this is worse better than when i was on maternity leave, whilst dd is at school, i plan to sort screwdrivers & spanners by decreasing size next week. oh the bliss

wrinklytum · 31/12/2008 00:15

SM me too! I am a saddo...we have box file galore of household stuff, billls, statements etc etc..dd sn file has gone to 2 files though!!!!

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 31/12/2008 00:18

boxes went out on Christmas Day after the DS's had gone to exH's.

As long as you have receipts/warantee cards etc you don't need the box - just take up space.

psychohohohoho · 31/12/2008 00:20

I keep the boxes too.

in fact, I found boxes in the attic recently for items that broke years ago, and even then, they were years old....

I think my DH might be your DH

Oovavu · 31/12/2008 00:25

good. he can sleep at yours tonight then

mawbroon · 31/12/2008 00:35

I tend to chuck these kind of boxes in the loft. When we moved house a couple of years ago, it was great to have the original packaging to wrap some of the things in. Eg the pc/monitor etc etc. DH gets a bit heavy handed without stopping to think what might be in the box.

Small stuff like the kettle etc, I still keep the box, but would probably then use it for something else when I needed to.

I keep the receipts, but my system is to staple them on to the front of the instruction booklet which is then kept in my special easily accessible "instruction booklet" box file.

psychohohohoho · 31/12/2008 00:44

...

mumeeee · 31/12/2008 17:24

We always keep boxes from electrical stuff until the garentee runs out. We put them in the loft so they don't get in the way.

OrmIrian · 31/12/2008 17:34

No. I'm with your DH. Sorry. I might keep them a bit longer perhaps but not much. We have no room in our house for anything else. Dh and his family are hoarders par excellence. DH's grandparents still kept their wedding presents in the original boxes from 1920something.

SalLikesCoffee · 31/12/2008 17:39

I'm with your DH too, sorry. A shop should replace a faulty item anyway with a receipt.

In our house dh is the hoarder. Drives me bonkers.
