Thinking about it, my BIL lives in a HA house. He earns £40K a year but could no way afford to buy in the area he lives in. I hardly think that makes him a scumbag living off the state, it just reflects that actually there is a market for low cost housing. If you overpaid for your house thats your problem really isn't it.

I grew up on benefits, and, possibly lucky enough, felt never any shame about this....and since adulthood I have never been in the situation where I needed benefits or anything.....however, I am not all that proud of that neither....it's just the way it is....
I could understand if maybe you would get nasty comments and people hauling abuse at you, because they think you are on benefits....but otherwise, I can't think of why it matters so much to you whast others think...

BTW as i understand it, all new housing estates have to have a proportion allocated for low cost/HA housing. So best look for an old house next time, just in case you have to live next door to someone on the sponge!
