Is she being unreasonable or is this not quite the 'right' thing to do?

I'm in Sainsburys buying brocolli and the woman stocking the shelves told me I ought to 'snap the stalk off' so I didn't pay for more than I needed.

I didn't think this was quite right so I muttered something about feeding the stalks to the bunny.

Is this common or is Sainsbo's woman a big thief?

whatttt?

you can eat the stalk anyway, it's good for you

orangehead · 17/12/2008 18:29

Never heard of that before

jawjawnotwarwar · 17/12/2008 18:31

You CAN eat the stalk, but I'm sure the top bits are where the goodness is.....good tip! Why should we pay for stalk? Down with stalk!

VivaLaPotPourri · 17/12/2008 18:31

mmmm, stalk is the best bit!

TheFalconInThePearTree · 17/12/2008 18:32

No it isn't right, particuarly as the stalk is the nicest part imho.

Desiderata · 17/12/2008 18:33

I always snap the stalks off if I'm paying by weight.

Fleurlechaunte · 17/12/2008 18:34

I have heard this before. I don't do it as I like the stalk but I don't see a problem with not buying and paying for something you will not eat. You wouldn't buy any other fruit or vegetable that wasnt up to scratch would you?

dingdongmerrilyonpie · 17/12/2008 18:35

I used to hate seeing people snap off the stalks when I worked on a checkout. I doubt very much whether the savings made much of a difference to their lives.

ByTheSea · 17/12/2008 18:37

I like the stalk but even if I didn't, until I read this thread, it never occurred to me that people do that or to do that myself.

TheProvincialLady · 17/12/2008 18:38

It's so uncouth. The stalk is the best bit. Do people take a vegetable peeler so that they can save 7p on a bag of carrots too?

Desiderata · 17/12/2008 18:38

Ah, but you can also guage the freshness at the same time. If the stalk's all bendy, and doesn't snap easily, then it's old and crapola.

MadameCheese · 17/12/2008 18:39

I'm surprised a member of staff recommended you do this. I remember seeing a woman snapping asparagus and thinking it was wrong but I didn't have the guts to say so.

malovitt · 17/12/2008 18:40

I've seen people taking the stalks off cherries and the green bits off tomatoes to save money.

Fleurlechaunte · 17/12/2008 18:42

Is it ok to pick through the exhorbitantly expensive bags of cherries in M&S to make sure you get a good selection? I got told off for that by an old lady. I told her to mind her own business.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/12/2008 18:48

Picking through to ensure you're buying nice cherries is fair enough.

Removing the nonedible bits, not so much. (Stoning the cherries would get you some funny looks.)

Oh, and I love the stalk, too.

TheFalconInThePearTree · 17/12/2008 18:49

PMSL at the thought of someone peeling their carrots in the middle of Tescos.

Yanda · 17/12/2008 18:49

I always snap the stalks off. It doesn't make much difference to my life but why should I pay for a great lump of stalk?

dingdongmerrilyonpie · 17/12/2008 18:53

I also saw people who weighed their vegetables, stuck the label on, then added more vegetables.

How desparate must they be

shouldbeironing · 17/12/2008 19:00

I recently saw an elderly man get a KNIFE out of his coat and proceed to CUT the stalks off the broccoli in Sainsburys. Staff nearby didnt blink so I just moved hastily away.

spicemonster · 17/12/2008 19:03

She is being unreasonable. I'm sure they factor in the price of the stalk. By that token, you'd peel your oranges and take your grapes off the stalks to save a few bob

karala · 17/12/2008 19:06

Madame Cheese: I was told to snap asparagus to check freshness

plantsitter · 17/12/2008 19:13

I think I'm too weedy to snap the stalks off broccoli with my bare hands. Am I doing it wrong?

belcantwait · 17/12/2008 19:20

yeahhh! i do that too after dh once suggested it. always do it furtively as feel a bit naughty doing it

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 17/12/2008 19:28

When I used to live in a rubbish bit of south London, everyone did that

I have never known anyone eat the stalk!
