Is she being unreasonable or is this not quite the 'right' thing to do?

I'm in Sainsburys buying brocolli and the woman stocking the shelves told me I ought to 'snap the stalk off' so I didn't pay for more than I needed.

I didn't think this was quite right so I muttered something about feeding the stalks to the bunny.

Is this common or is Sainsbo's woman a big thief?

ROFL, I can see it now when money get really tight. people standing in tesco doing the following:

removing stalk from brocci
pulling cherrys off and stoning them in store
peeling ornages, apples and carrots
peeling potatos
taking every grape off the stalk
pulling tops off strawbeeries and tomomatos!! LOL

think of the mess!!

How much do you really safe through? Also where do you put the stalk when you chop it off.

PingpingsatonSantasface · 18/12/2008 11:47

Do you reckon you cold get arrested for shoplifting a stalk? You could claim it was worthless without its head (which you bought).

FourArms · 18/12/2008 13:56

The dad of a friend from uni does this. He takes his penknife everywhere, and uses that to cut the stalk. I have once or twice snapped the stalk off if it's a floret that's more stalk than head. It's easy enough if the brocolli is fresh.

I also lift the bunch of grapes out of the bag, empty out the horrible ones which are going rotten, then put the bunch back in. Don't see why I should pay for something that I can't eat.

HollyCherry · 19/12/2008 13:33

I always snap the stalk off - why pay for something you're not going to use?

whonickedmynickname · 19/12/2008 14:04

this has NEVER occured to me! Broccoli is broccoli - if the stalk wasn't edible then they wouldn't include it would they????!!!

What a waste - who is going to go round and buy all the left over stalks??!!!!

Oh dear I obviously live a sheltered life.....

Snapping the stalk off means that the shop is undercharging you, if everyone did it, the price would need to go up considerably. I think it's a kind of stealing, personally -- removing rotten grapes is different, they are damaged goods.

Our pet rodents quite like the stalk, I boil it with potatoes otherwise to cook it down well.

whonicked - lots of fresh veg comes with un-edible bits though? stones, stalks,outer-leaves, pips etc
