Is she being unreasonable or is this not quite the 'right' thing to do?

I'm in Sainsburys buying brocolli and the woman stocking the shelves told me I ought to 'snap the stalk off' so I didn't pay for more than I needed.

I didn't think this was quite right so I muttered something about feeding the stalks to the bunny.

Is this common or is Sainsbo's woman a big thief?

Nighbynight · 17/12/2008 21:29

to the OP - yes it is common.

loobeylou · 17/12/2008 21:39

I don't snap me broccoli but I DO remove any manky squished grapes from the bag before they go in the trolley.

Another thing I see lots and would never do is people giving their DC grapes etc to eat out of bags yet to be weighed. Now, that IS theft, no?

i wonder what they would say in woollies if I unwrapped all the pick and mix before putting them in my bag! (not that i am going in there, bloody ridiculous queues and I feel so sorry for the staff having to work damn hard and put up with rude customers when they are all facing a bleak and jobless new year)

sunnygirl1412 · 17/12/2008 21:42

I agree with the people who recommend eating the stalk raw. I don't even peel it, just slice it thinly and eat it like a bowl of crisps. it's one of the cook's perks, I think.

flea · 17/12/2008 21:47

but my local supermarket provides a cute little saw at the broccoli section purely so you can cut the stalks off... so at least some of them positively encourage you

VersdeSociete · 17/12/2008 21:53

I feel like I live in a different universe or maybe I just don't notice anything. Have never seen this. Would never occur to me to do it. I mean I could debone the chickens and derind the cheeses...

mummiesnet · 17/12/2008 21:56

If the stalk-haters cut off the stalk then surely that just leaves more stalk available for the stalk-lovers.

Win-win, non?

VisionsOfSugarPlums · 17/12/2008 22:14

In Superquinn here in Ireland they provide a little saw beside the broccoli so you can saw off the stalk if you want to.

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 17/12/2008 22:20

But the stalk is yummy!

Peel it, slice it and steam it with the florets. Tastes delicious, and is certainly NOT slimey!

puddinghead · 17/12/2008 23:08

If I'm feeling rebellious I will snap that stalk off. I'll also hide a bit of ginger in my reusable bag and 'forget' to put it on the checkout. Kids often get a free single brown speckled banana to keep them quiet as we're going round (ones that no one in their right minds is going to purchase anyway).

They get enough of our money, they can spare a bit here and there. Anyway, I generously give them back the plastic trays they put the mushrooms in.

It may be sad but, oooh makes me feel so baaad!

GoodWilfToAllMN · 18/12/2008 09:11

Oh you're making it up now with your tales of special mini Broccoli Saws. I won't believe it until I have seen the photographic evidence.

psychohohohoho · 18/12/2008 09:16

My aunt did/does this (unsure now.....I never shop with her, it is a disturbing experience..........).......and she told me to do the same!

I do not.....one I am not like her, and two, the bunnies like it!

ladymariner · 18/12/2008 09:16

I snap the stalks off too! They weigh more than the bloody florets and I don't eat them.

But I am a Northener

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2008 09:28

I don't buy broccoli because I don't like it but I'm tempted to just so I can snap off the stalk.
Can I take the top off the pineapples too?
The leaves off the cauliflower?

elliephant · 18/12/2008 09:37

Superquinn- posh supermarket in Ireland- supplies little hacksaws beside the broccoli so you can chop off the stalks .

VersdeSociete · 18/12/2008 09:58

Yes the broccoli saws are going too far. My credulity is strained. Also lookee here, they sell florets in bags. do those florets cost more? If so, presumably the whole broccoli is being marked down because it includes stalk, so cutting off the stalk is gaining an advantage?

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2008 10:08

You can cut down leeks too!!

Someone in Morrissons in a crappy part of London told me to switch all the eggs in the boxes, so you can get expensive eggs, but just put them in a cheap box...I always wondered why it was so hectic around the egg shelf there.

jujumaman · 18/12/2008 10:48

Oho, I predict a nationwide epidemic of stalk snapping

The economy will be saved. It's those little gestures that make all the difference.

Tortington · 18/12/2008 10:53

good tip about the eggs !

i think there is a very real stalk issue being missed here.

there are two types of stalk that i can see - one i would call 'the trunk' the other stalks make your mini trees that you put on your plate -

i would snap the former 0 if i was strong enough - whihc i am not.

Cies · 18/12/2008 11:03

It's just not on! Plus, the stalk is yummy.

And, logistically, I can't see how you can have enough strength to snap it off. It's quite thick, isn't it .

Anyway, I buy my fruit and veg in the local greengrocer and the lady gives me such good service that I wouldn't want to cheat her out of anything.

Pimmpom · 18/12/2008 11:09

PMSL - how on earth does anyone manage to snap off the stork, they are soooo thick. Or does everyone break off the florets and put them in a separate bag?

brightongirldownunder · 18/12/2008 11:10

Blimey I'd be arrested if I did that over here! I don't think people even prod the veg apart from me. I got extremely dirty looks the other day for smelling the grapes and announcing that they were fermenting in the heat.
Stalks are fab for soup, STALKS RULE!

Pimmpom · 18/12/2008 11:11

*stalks of course.

brightongirldownunder · 18/12/2008 11:18

Always smell the stalk.
