Is she being unreasonable or is this not quite the 'right' thing to do?

I'm in Sainsburys buying brocolli and the woman stocking the shelves told me I ought to 'snap the stalk off' so I didn't pay for more than I needed.

I didn't think this was quite right so I muttered something about feeding the stalks to the bunny.

Is this common or is Sainsbo's woman a big thief?

SparklyBaubleFeast · 17/12/2008 19:29

Ivykaty44 · 17/12/2008 19:30

Anyone that doesn't want the stalk - send them my way - love the stalk and will eat raw (dont like the tree bit raw though ahhsplitssh)

AnAngelWithin · 17/12/2008 19:33

SparklyBaubleFeast · 17/12/2008 19:34

KatieDD · 17/12/2008 19:37

shouldbeironing I'm surprised he wasn't wrestled to the ground and charged with possessing a dangerous weapon.

bohemianbint · 17/12/2008 19:39

I do it with asparagus. It's that expensive, and sometimes the stalks are really long, reckon it makes a big difference...

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 19:42

She's a looon. I peel the stalk and eat it. It's nutty in flavour. You can eat that bit uncooked so you get lots of vitamins. My children who arent' great veg eaters will eat raw broccoli stalk.

I might take the stalks and no florets!

Ivykaty44 · 17/12/2008 19:49

peel - just eat it

Wallace · 17/12/2008 19:54

Next time I go to the supermarket I am going to de-core the apples before they get weighed

MerryMadMarg · 17/12/2008 20:02

I can't remember which supermarket, but I've seen a sign saying that the broccoli stalks are not to be removed.

NancysGarden · 17/12/2008 20:09

Agree with provincial lady, it is uncouth. Them's the folk with all the cash, betcha!

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 17/12/2008 20:19

Isn't that why the bagged florets are more expensive? Bcs you are getting all nice fluffy tops and no yucky slimy bottoms, which bring the price down?

So technically I would say it is not quite the right thing to do. Desi.

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/12/2008 20:22

really awful thing to do

Lauriefairyonthetreeeatscake · 17/12/2008 20:26

Stalk breaker or not? You decide

Stalk snappers of the world unite: you have nothing to lose but your dignity!

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 17/12/2008 20:51

yes, I think that's what it comes down to. It seems a little infra-dig to be told off by a 13yr old store detective for broccoli-related crimes, rather than glugging a third of a bottle of Baileys and filling up with babylotion before replacing the cap.

mrsgboring · 17/12/2008 20:55

I used to do it when I was a genuinely cash strapped student. Now I can afford to pay for stalk I leave it on (and use it in cooking too - didn't actually realise till I was older that you could cook the stalk)

nbee84 · 17/12/2008 21:01

My Dad used to destalk all the mushrooms!

TurquoiseNicki · 17/12/2008 21:04

Oh no - i DO that! No-one in our house will eat the stalks so they get chucked out. I promise NEVER to do it again. Bad, I am.

themulledmanneredjanitor · 17/12/2008 21:06

i do it too.
i would chop it off and bin itnotherwise.
supermarkets make huge amounts of money-fuck em

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 17/12/2008 21:07

I think I've been missing a trick actually. I'm going to train dd (3) to do it disingenously.

Desiderata · 17/12/2008 21:07

I am roffling at this thread

I am taking great pride in the knowledge that some women might think me shameful for snapping stalks.

I am particularly grateful for the asparagus tip (if you'll pardon the pun). I shall henceforth discard with woody lower stalks of said vegetable, in a loud and cracking manner whenever someone middle-class, pugnacious and smelling of J'Adore should happen my way in Sainsbury's.

The next time they're in season, of course

Desiderata · 17/12/2008 21:09

Ha ha ha! I've just noticed Crush's comment

Nope! Killing someone is a really awful thing to do.
