I know I am, we need them, thank god they've finally come. But does it all have to be so noisy? It looks like all my quiet days before Xmas are now blown - I'm probably going to go shopping in town today, to get some piece and quiet ...

OMG NQC, have they only just come

Did you have to get someone new in or is it the same plumber?

Take a good book and find a cosy coffee shop and stay there for a bit of piece and quiet.

lottiejenkins · 09/12/2008 08:31

I have the builders in sorting out the whole of my downstairs after the flood in my house!
They are hammering and banging away. They are coming in my sitting room tomorrow. I wanted it left till after Christmas but they want to get going!

FrannyandZooey · 09/12/2008 08:31

i thought this was something about having your period

we have to have our bathroom sorted in the new year
the guy did say it would be so disruptive he advised we went away while it happened
so sympathy for you

NotQuiteCockney · 09/12/2008 09:13

They came yesterday. It's the same guy, plus a colleague. Who seems fine (although he cannot get my name right, but keeps saying it anyway!). The two of them argue about what to do a lot, which seems like a good thing.

They are tidying up after themselves reasonably well. But the work is pretty much everywhere, and our house is open plan, so it really sucks. I got a headache yesterday, and it's back today, although they're not here yet.

I will go for a run when they come, and then go into town and do shopping, I think.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 09/12/2008 09:48

And now they're still not here. Grr. I hate having them here, but the work needs to be done.

They have keys, sod it, I will go out.

OP posts:
AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 09/12/2008 17:36

How did it go NQC? did they turn up?

hecAteAMillionMincePies · 09/12/2008 17:39

Ah, actual plumbers. I assumed, like F&Z, that it was code for something

NotQuiteCockney · 09/12/2008 17:41

Yes, they got here around noon.

To be fair, they'd been working out what they needed to buy, and buying it.

They're still here now.

They're getting a lot done, anyway. It's a bit noisy though, particularly as DS2 got sent home from school ill today, and has now gone to bed. He isn't moaning about the noise, though.

OP posts:
AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 09/12/2008 17:56

Well at least they are actually getting on with it.

Lol at Hecate and F&Z

Hope it all goes well NQC and that DS2 feels better soon.

BellsCarolsNSleighs · 09/12/2008 17:59

you have my full and utter sympathy!!

NotQuiteCockney · 09/12/2008 18:52

I would much rather have my period, a bazillion times over, than the plumbers in.

They are still here. Yes, they are getting on with it, but wtf?

I am used to workmen who start at 7:30 in the morning, and turn into pumpkins at 3:30 - not get here at noon, and stay until 7.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 07:02

Oh Christ. DS2 was up two or three times in the night, waking me. He's still got a dreadful wet cough. I am exhausted. I went for a lovely swim last night (and ran yesterday morning), I could have had a great night's sleep ... gah.

I might try taking DS2 with me into town, shopping ... but I doubt he's up for it, and it won't help him get better ... looks like a day stuck in with noisy plumbers.

Oh, and they left after 8pm last night.

Sorry!

Clicked on this thread in error.

....I had thought the title to be an euphemism...

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 07:34

You're by no means the only one - apparently everyone thinks 'having the plumbers in' is a euphemism for having one's period.

Wait - aren't you a bloke, rg2? Why on earth would you want to listen to someone complain about her period?

OP posts:
hecAteAMillionMincePies · 10/12/2008 07:59

If he's anything like my husband, he probably wanted to say that we complain about nothing and we'd know real pain if we had this paper cut like him.

And then, being on a roll, he'd go on to say that if MEN had babies, they'd do it down the pub between pints.

And then he'd do a weird sort of pushing demonstration, imaginary pint in hand.

And then someone would hit him with a frying pan.

(don't take offence rg2, I'm just playing! )

hecAteAMillionMincePies · 10/12/2008 08:00

And, basically, telling you why my husband now has a head that is totally flat at the back.

AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 10/12/2008 08:03

NQC poor DS2 and poor you

I really hope your plumbers come in early and finish a leeetle earlier than 8pm

lol hecate your posts always make me pmsl

lottiejenkins · 10/12/2008 08:08

My builders are in again NQC,,,,,,,, banging and hammering away two feet from me!! I feel your pain!! They are taking up the wooden floor and the skirting board. I am going to have one hell of a headache later on today!!

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 08:18

Ah, my husband is sympathetic about period pain.

Mine have been drilling holes in (thick, Victorian, brick) walls. Taking the side off a big boxed-in beam. And laying pipes. In theory, today, we will have heat in this side of the house.

DS2 is not very ill, but he doesn't want to go to school. I need to go shopping for stocking fillers, but DS2 is only 4, and believes in FC, so that will be fun.

AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 10/12/2008 08:34

Awww I see your dilema, could you shop covertly and promise him a treat while out, or shop online?

On the plus side you may get heating today

psychohohohoho · 10/12/2008 09:19

am feeling strangely plased now that DH can turn his hand to plumbing and has been the one doing our bathroom (even though he bollauxed the hot water and we dd in the end have to get a REAL plumber in).

the REAL plumber also came in the evening (after 7pm), but he was quick and fairly quiet....

DH at least I can treat in the same manner as hecate treats her DH......he has a lovely head that could do with flattening

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 10:14

Yeah, I am looking forward to heating. And hot water - we have no hot water in half the house. I've got used to boiling the kettle to scrub the dishes though.

No sign of my guys yet this morning. They did say they'd be here early today - but then, according to DH, they were heading to another job last night at 8:15.

DS2 is very happy on the computer (thank god for Poisson Rouge) so I've been bustling about sorting out laundry and dishes. I stopped online shopping yesterday, I just think it's too close to the holidays - anyway, it's stocking stuffers I'm after, and I just want to go to M+S and Boots.

Helpfully, next door, which has been empty for months, appears to be starting their renovations today, mostly doing work out front. Actually, out front of my house. Gah. So even without my builders in, I'm down for some noise.

We have to go into town later to get DS1, anyway, so I think we might manage some shopping then. And we might make it to the local high street, on the basis that I think (know, really) that Woolies has cheap things we can buy, and he can paint. He loves painting things.

OP posts:
lottiejenkins · 10/12/2008 11:03

I havent had any water downstairs for about six weeks, ive been lugging bottles of cold water from my neighbours round to mine! And for hot water ive been up and down the stairs like Jack and Jill with buckets of hot water out of the bath! I have thankfully had heating though!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 10/12/2008 12:14

We have heating in half the house (our house is two houses joined up) - granted, not the half we really spend much time in, but hey, it's been ok.

We still haven't left the house, today. Although the plumbers seem to be on chatting-and-using-torches duty, rather than smashing and drilling today, thankfully.

Still hoping to make it into town early, though, and do a tiny bit of shopping.

OP posts:
lottiejenkins · 11/12/2008 08:26

How is it going NQC? Did you get to go shopping yesterday? Hows your ds today? My builders have done as much as they can for now. They were very good. One of them even put my new keyboard on the computer for me!

Im now waiting for the plumber to come and put my new sink in for me!
