Or alternately laugh at and love the incredibly successful talented and able comedian/actress/wife/ mother.

imaginaryfriend · 07/01/2009 00:27

I do laugh at all the talented comediennes. Unfortunately, for me, DF doesn't fall into that category.

melbob · 07/01/2009 00:28

At last I thought it was only me, she is sooooooooooo irritating a a professional fatty. I am unconvinced that she is comfortable about her weight and that bl**dy Terry's choclate orange ad just adds to my irritation so your fat and
are greedy for chocolate no stereotyping there then....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

mayorquimby · 07/01/2009 10:49

can i be next in line to punch her? i haven't read the book yet but have been subjected to her painfully unfunny sitcom (and probably the worst of all time) vicar of dibly by relatives over holidays. i mean really she just is not funny. (to me of course,i know she's very successful so obviously some people find her funny etc etc) but really she's not.
her comedy is on a par with when the whistle blows from extras.

oh and her husband has still thought for the last 10 years that racist jamaican imressions = comedy, so can i punch him next

Gateau · 07/01/2009 11:36

Agree melbob: I too am unconvinced she is comfortable with her weight.
I don't think anyone who is overweight is comfortable with it, TBH.

poppy34 · 07/01/2009 11:37

yep -yanbu ..way too much self justification re the weight and I'm afraid she is tarred by association with lenny henry who is near if not at the top of my "first in line come the revolution" list.

imaginaryfriend · 07/01/2009 11:49

My mum hates her too.

Sycamoretree · 07/01/2009 12:02

I have met her. I had to make her a cup of tea and was embarassed to ask her if she wanted sugar - don't ask me why. She did - two as it happens.

She was very nice, and I meet a lot of way more famous people in my line of work, but for some reason, she was the one I was most star struck by. I think it's because I grew up loving French and Saunders and there's not many people outside friends and family that you meet that you can genuinely say, oh, you made my life a bit more fun and entertaining over the course of several years.

I don't think she deserves a punch. That's just so easy to say. She might not be to everyone's tastes but christ, if we were all picked over like this on a MN thread...

Just because she's in the public eye doesn't mean we should feel at liberty to assasinate her character like a bunch of kids in the playground!

Sycamoretree · 07/01/2009 12:04

By the way, she doesn't write Vicar of Dibly, Richard Curtis does, so if it's not to your funny bone tastes, you should direct your disatisfaction at him!

mayorquimby · 07/01/2009 12:07

"By the way, she doesn't write Vicar of Dibly, Richard Curtis does"

duly noted, he too is now on my "people to punch" list. she remains as i still find her painfully unfunny.

fleacircus · 07/01/2009 12:11

It's her elaborate gurning through Lark Rise to Candleford that tips me over the edge. Tended towards liking her before that.

Sycamoretree · 07/01/2009 12:13

Mayor - can't you just downgrade to a tut and disgusted roll of the eyes.

Punching on a thread this side of a lunch hour is just so, uncouth - especially from such a distinguished gentleman.

mayorquimby · 07/01/2009 12:19

right you are violence is for the great unwashed.
i'll settle for some light mysoginy and bad mouthing at the next quarterly luncheon.much more becoming of a man of my stature.

and while we're griping about annoying famous people can i add some of my own?
or wuld that be a thread hijack?

Sycamoretree · 07/01/2009 12:27

Add away sir.

imaginaryfriend · 07/01/2009 12:33

I wouldn't punch her actually. I might gurn at her for a few hours while she was strapped to a chair as a means of revenge.

The truth is, in RL I'm sure I'd rather like her. It's her comedy persona that drives me crazy.

alors · 07/01/2009 12:42

She is very close friends with a friend of mine (children at school together).

From what I have heard, she is lovely in rl and not at all the fauxfunny fatlady that she does for a living.

mayorquimby · 07/01/2009 13:02

excellent.well piers morgan tops the list (as do most talking head on sky/c4 top 100 shittiest shit things/toughest celebs in reality land even though i still watch them)

dylan moran

nooka · 07/01/2009 18:30

Comedy is quite a personal thing. You either find it funny, or you don't. Nothing worse than enduring something that you find unfunny when presented by someone who thinks they are hilarious. I have no wish to punch anyone's lights out. I just turn off the tele. However I think there is nothing wrong with critiquing someone who is in the public eye, if they have chosen to be there. I do wonder why we should think that anyone we don't actually know is a "incredibly successful talented and able .../wife/ mother". Surely only her friends and family can judge that?

I would like to put everyone involved in Little Britain in the mayor's list. Not sure I agree with all his anti's (more because I think the footballers/minor popsters are irrelevant), but I do like the Simons Anstell and Pegg, and Dylan Moran too. I miss being able to watch Mock the Week, QI and Buzzcocks

wotulookinat · 07/01/2009 18:40

I like Dawn French. I'm a large lady too, and every single one of my boyfriends, apart from my (current ) one has fancied her!

ahfeckit · 07/01/2009 18:50

love the book and the book cover, nearly finished it actually. started reading it on Christmas Day (dh got it for me for Christmas). nothing wrong with her face. she looks happy, what's wrong with that??

KarlWrenbury · 07/01/2009 18:51

I havent read it but I always regard her as rather sly.

Tidgypuds · 07/01/2009 18:54

I think she looks stunning on the book cover, really beautiful and cant wait to read the book (waiting for my sis to finish with it)

I cant stand the woman, as for the Vicar of Dibley, not in the least bit funny. Her husband constantly laughs at his own jokes which is a huge turnoff. I took my DS to see a French and Saunders show. The only funny person was Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French was just the unfunny Stooge. Part of the show was her going up the isles asking for chocolate.
