To want to tell the loud, simpering mother in the post office queue to keep it down?

OK, now I accept that we all talk nonsense to our babies, even in public, especially when they do funny things, BUT this woman today in the post office was REALLY loud, REALLY simpering, and was doing the whole "oooooh aren't you a gorgeous laughing boy, Mummy loves you when you're that....doesn't she? oooooh, she does, she does, yes, Mummy's talking all about you.....oh you're smiling, oh Mummy loves that, ooooooo, yes you are, Mummy loves you...." Non stop.

And she was doing it so loudly and so smugly that I just wanted to tell her to shut up. The poor baby was only a few months old and was probably wanting her to shut up too!

I mean, really, the whole post office queue could hear her and she had this simpering look on her face that I just wanted to say "oh, PLEASE, get a life you sad cow".

God I am getting so intolerant these days. AIBU or do you agree that sometimes other mums' simpering is way over the top?

I am intrigued by the MN decision to pull the SiL thread. To be defamatory a statement has to be untrue (well MN wouldn't know one way or the other, so far dos there) but it also has to lower you in the eyes of right minded people.
Whilst charging for xmas lunch might make you seem a pillock I personally wouldn't say its in the same league as Nazi sympathising etc.

It is also true the "victim" has to be identifiable for a libel to have taken place. Given that Nic is not identifiable, I can't see how her sil would be.

Also, I have heard rather worse things said about other people on MN (ex-DHs etc etc) than that, and those threads have not been pulled.

Perhaps someone from MN Towers can enlighten us?

turniphead, SIL found out. SIL is a lawyer. MN not to blame. Cannot say much else due to upset SIL.

Oops, that hit the fan then! Take it that gets you out of Christmas day then? Poor you, sorry to laugh...

Dropdeadfred · 03/12/2008 15:51

how on earth did she find out????

Turniphead1 · 03/12/2008 16:02

Ooops. Lets say no more then. Sorry, Nic....

ROFL at everyone saying 'well it's better than swearing at the baby'. Yeesss... it is. but there is a happy medium. Doesn't have to be sugary sweet puke-making baby talk at top volume, neither does it have to be 'shut the f up you little brat'. Some people manage to talk in a normal tone to a baby and still* be loving. Tis a bit exhibitionist. Bit like the major snog-fests in public - not neccessary.

At least se knows everyone thought she was unreasonable - not surprised she's upset - more likely embarrased

stillstanding · 03/12/2008 22:43

LOL at nigdigby and the SIL fiasco! Hope it all ended ok, nic. Do tell us what you are doing on xmas day?!

mm22bys · 04/12/2008 08:11

Oh dear (about your SIL being a lawyer and finding out - is she on MN too then?)

YANBU about the loud simpering mother. Most babies are not deaf and the rest of us most definitely do not need to hear it!

hecate · 04/12/2008 09:08

oh dear. well, at least she has had the chance to see how the rest of the world views her pricing policy may yet be for the best!

neenztwinz · 04/12/2008 23:08

Well that has clinched it for me - was going to post something about my SIL but suspect she lurks on MN so have decided to definitely not do it now! What a nightmare... have you totally fallen out?

staffylover · 04/12/2008 23:13

the baby is probably thinking "feck off mum, grow up"
