To want to tell the loud, simpering mother in the post office queue to keep it down?

OK, now I accept that we all talk nonsense to our babies, even in public, especially when they do funny things, BUT this woman today in the post office was REALLY loud, REALLY simpering, and was doing the whole "oooooh aren't you a gorgeous laughing boy, Mummy loves you when you're that....doesn't she? oooooh, she does, she does, yes, Mummy's talking all about you.....oh you're smiling, oh Mummy loves that, ooooooo, yes you are, Mummy loves you...." Non stop.

And she was doing it so loudly and so smugly that I just wanted to tell her to shut up. The poor baby was only a few months old and was probably wanting her to shut up too!

I mean, really, the whole post office queue could hear her and she had this simpering look on her face that I just wanted to say "oh, PLEASE, get a life you sad cow".

God I am getting so intolerant these days. AIBU or do you agree that sometimes other mums' simpering is way over the top?

We know it's gone, but why did it go?

Soupdragon moaning is good for all of us, plus the AIBU area makes me feel so much better about DH.

Miyazaki · 02/12/2008 18:50

why was it pulled?

pamelat · 02/12/2008 18:53

Was worried this thread was about me!!

Its not.

I don't think it matters. I can see how it might me mildly irriating for 2 minutes but its better than children being shouted at or unloved.

SpandexIsMyEnemy · 02/12/2008 18:56

only read the first post - but well, it's prob pfb! lol. leave the woman alone!

least I know it's deffo not me - mine is 'DS come here, DS leave that alone please, DS stand by mummys legs please' or in the supermarket we sing nursery rhymes god knows what the old dears must think!

Salleroo · 02/12/2008 18:56

Sounds like someone I know who would do that just to show you 'what a fab interactive mother she is'. Would have gotten on my tits too.

Frosty - calm down or go read some other posts.

noonki · 02/12/2008 19:54

so YABVU

Dropdeadfred · 02/12/2008 20:06

why was thread pulled?

Wilkiepedia · 02/12/2008 20:10

I sang with my 2 year old all the way round Asda today to keep him occupied. Would be gutted if I came on here and someone was slagging me off for it.

Surely better to be interacting with your child than ignoring/shouting at them.

Suspect you know YABU but you are pregnant so hey, you get let off

pamelat · 02/12/2008 20:11

interactive mummy show could be to make up for many issues, such as PND etc or just general insecurity in her new role. Poor woman.

EllieG · 02/12/2008 20:13

I can simper for Britain, but I do try and stop myself since I heard a man giving his boy lunch recently - went like this

'Sam? Sam? (Sam takes mouthful)BEST BOY!!!! Sam? Sam? BEST BOY!!!'

Repeat for half an hour at top of voice when me and DH are trying to enjoy a quiet chat - it did get annoying and was very smug.

TheSeriousSanta · 02/12/2008 20:16

Being lovely, kind, warm and considerate to her child. How damn well dare she???

If this is the worst thing you encountered all day, then I'd say you have a good life.

And, I'm not a fan of 'my life is harder than yours' but she is rejoicing in motherhood. I think that's allowed....

I've been selling a lot on Ebay recently, so it could quite easily have been me.

Nicdigby · 02/12/2008 20:17

I think the consensus is that a little bit of quieter simpering is ok but it's the loud continuing stuff which seems really smug and annoying which gets on people's tits.

Other thread was pulled due to being defamatory. (tho true, I assure you). It did give me 12 hours of very funny reassurance that it is SIL being unreasonable.

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 02/12/2008 20:21

We need to know. Are you going to SIL for Xmas lunch?

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 02/12/2008 20:21

Are you going to go though Nic?

TheSeriousSanta · 02/12/2008 20:24

I have to say, though... I don't much care what the random strangers in the post office think of me. I care far more about my son being happy...
(though I would like to point out I was not in any post office today so this cannot have been me )

Feel like I've totally missed out on a much more interesting thread though... Are you going to SIL's for lunch? And why wouldn't you be? Can I have a non-defamatory summation on SIL's unreasonable-ness?

PLEase

scifinerd · 02/12/2008 20:24

OP i think you would hate me, I am always talking nonsense to my ds in public and whereas a few years ago I might not of to my pfb dd dues to embarrassment, I find the older I get the less I care (much to the embarrassment of my pre-teen pfb dd). My bf says I have a very carrying voice but I guess I just don't care. I love chatting to my baby and its meant to be good for them anyway.

scifinerd · 02/12/2008 20:26

PS I think the sil lunch thread was really interesting too and I would like to know the outcome because as well as being an embarrasment in public I am also nosy.

Dropdeadfred · 02/12/2008 20:33

who said it was defamatory? it's anonymous isn't it???

thenewme · 02/12/2008 20:35

Just wait until you have your baby.

YABU.

Tortington · 02/12/2008 20:36

YANbu
