To think it's really not difficult to indicate when driving? So why do people not bother?

When they teach you to drive, they tell you to indicate when your turning in and out of roads, on roundabouts, joining a carraigeway. So why is it people don't seem to bother indicating?

I was behind several different cars this morning who didn't bother to indicate at all the whole time i was behind them. I always think if you don't indicate it means you are not aware of anything that's going on around you because otherwise you would indicate? If you are aware but still don't bother then you shouldn't have a licence. It's not hard to indicate. Rant over.

Icing the problem is this:

big posh cars have lots of lovely gadgets; expresso coffee machines, croissant warmer, mini aquarium etc etc.

Unfortunately as all these essential gadgets take up a lot of the electronic system, there is no space for indicators.

They don't indicate because they can't

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2008 11:43

It's because everyone on the road (except me and you, of course) are numpties.

onepieceoflollipop · 28/11/2008 11:43

Yeah and that as well Puppy.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 28/11/2008 11:45

Lollipop

DH always says things like "all that money on a 5 series BMW and then they couldn't afford the indicators".

OP, I'm with you, it's really annoying especially on roundabouts.

LilRedWG · 28/11/2008 11:46

Because they are lazy and rude, that's why! Pet hate of mine.

onepieceoflollipop · 28/11/2008 11:47

I had a 10 year old Fiesta and it had no electric windows, no central locking, no heating windscreen. However it did have very well functioning indicators.

frasersmummy · 28/11/2008 11:48

ahh see the big flashy cars all send out physic rays telling you which way they are going...

unfortunately my litte old jilopy doesnt pick them up

NorbertDentressangle · 28/11/2008 11:48

Oh don't get me started on this -it drives me insane!

Roundabouts are the the place where not indicating makes me the most angry, especially mini roundabouts where there isn't the space/distance for mis-judging things

IcingOnTheCake · 28/11/2008 11:49

I don't just mean posh, expensive cars. I mean any car old or new, male or female, old and young. People in general just don't indicate.

WotsThatSkippy · 28/11/2008 11:50

Argh, it pisses me off no end, having recently failed my test for a pathetic reason:-(

I see so many drivers who don't indicate, drive too fast and can't park for toffee and it makes me . Must pass soon!

sixlostmonkeys · 28/11/2008 11:50

I once came across a non indicating BIG massive posher than posh car. It happened to park in the street I too was parking. I struck up a conversation with them telling them what a lovely car it was. They were very proud and told me all about it; what it has and what it does and how much it cost. I then said "what a shame it doesn't have indicators...."

made me feel better.

If you do happen to see a car indicating though it only means one thing - the electrics are working.

onepieceoflollipop · 28/11/2008 11:51

I know that you didn't single out big posh cars, it was me that did that.

LilRedWG · 28/11/2008 11:52

OPlease don't turn this into another class/expense row ladies! Icing wanted to rant in general, not start a row about specific cars/drivers.

BouncingTurtle · 28/11/2008 11:54

Didn't you know BMWs and Audis big posh cars have indicators as an optional extra

Fecking annoys the hell out of me as well, so YADNBU!

rempy · 28/11/2008 11:55

argh, drives me mad.

is it rude to expand this aibur to include middle lane sitters? not only do they inappropriately use the road, they never bloody indicate when they do deign to change lanes......!'#%^(%

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2008 11:55

Yes it';s not just posh car drivers who are numpties - it's everyone. Except me and Op, as I said.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/11/2008 11:55

Ah, but if you're driving properly, those around you can just tell when you're going to turn, it's obvious, you know, from how you're driving.

VinegarTinselTits · 28/11/2008 11:57

I did an advanced driving course a couple of yrs ago and my intructor told me you dont always need to indicate, for instance if there are no other cars about then you dont need to indicate or if it is quite obvious which way you are going then no need to either.

It is not something that bothers me, but personally i do think you should indicate if there are other cars and pedestrians around, however, i think if someone turns without indicating and you have to brake suddenly then you are too close to them anyway.

If you are driving at a safe speed and distance then it shouldnt matter if the person in front does not indicate when turning, but i do understand your gripe, it can be annoying.

mayorquimby · 28/11/2008 11:57

"big posh cars have lots of lovely gadgets; expresso coffee machines, croissant warmer, mini aquarium etc etc."

oi i see a lot of people in shitty fiats, toyotas and micras not indicating. i reckon you just notice the posh ones because as a teenager would ay "you is a car racist"

i'd love to know the answer to this though. and why people don't understand what lane they're meant to be in and whn they're meant to indicate on roundabouts.my sister does it the wrong way (she goes in the right hand lane and indicates even if she is going straight) and no matter how many times i tell her she still does it. her argument is perversely right in it's logic however.she reckons that because everyone does it the wrong way (her way) it is much safer and makes more sense because it means that you won't get cut up by some berk in the right hand lane who is in fact going straight as well. how come she doesn'trealise she is that berk cutting people up?

NewNameOtherOneWasObvious · 28/11/2008 11:59

NorbertDentressangle... you spoke my mind. My BIG HAT when waiting at a RAB is for some git to turn off left without indicating... you could have moved out FFS instead of still sitting there. It drives me (no pun intended) to distraction

glasgowstyle · 28/11/2008 11:59

Where I am it's surprising when anyone else indicates when coming off a roundabout, changes lanes especially on a motorway or uses an indicator at all. I use my indicators properly though.

NewNameOtherOneWasObvious · 28/11/2008 12:00

Obviously meant my BIG HATE
See - these numpties even distract my keyboard

MsSparkle · 28/11/2008 12:04

mayorquimby yes people like your sister annoy me! There is a roundabout i have to go on reguarly and most people know to go straight on you use the left lane but you still get annoying people who use the right lane and cut across. Annoys me alot.

OrmIrian · 28/11/2008 12:08

And.... its very dangerous to pedestrians when cars don't indicate. How the f* are you supposed to know if a car is going to turn right down the road over which you are about to launch yourself with 2 children, if the driver fails to let you know?

Drivers often seem to assume that indicators are for other drivers only.

IcingOnTheCake · 28/11/2008 12:19

Agree there. I always have to be one step ahead when i am going to cross the road with my pushchair. I have starting crossing before because the car going around the roundabout isn't signalling to come off at where i am crossing. Then the next thing you know they stop suddenly and glare at you because they have had to stop!
