We're going out tonight, and DH pointed me at the website for the karaoke place, so I could see what music there was.

There's no Belle and Seb. There's no Public Enemy. There's no Liz Phair or PJ Harvey. Grrr.

eh?

who

claw3 · 21/11/2008 09:40

Not quite sure Liz Phair or PJ Harvey, would be considered as 'black' music?

Karaoke is hideous anyway.

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 09:47

So what is there? Belle and Seb not really mainstream karaoke music anyway.

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 09:48
NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2008 09:52

There's karaoke Kate Bush, which has got to be weirder, surely?

I know Belle and Seb isn't mainstream - hence the use of the term "mainstream" in the tread titles. Yes, Liz Phair and PJ aren't black, but they're not men. There's no Billie Holiday, either. No Ani Defranco (lots of gay man music though, so I didn't add 'straight' to my list of qualifiers).

(This is private room karaoke, not the public stuff - I've not tried the public stuff, it sounds scary. The small room stuff is fun.)

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 09:56

Look, karaoke is mainstream. YABU.

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 09:56

Actually, is this thread a piss-take?

NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2008 09:58

Ah, but I want to sing Belle and Seb. I don't want to sing Britney.

I don't think it's a piss-take entirely, I'm just having a whinge.

pmsl at karaoke Public Enemy
YABU and a bit silly

Pinkjenny · 21/11/2008 10:00

We did private karaoke a fortnight ago and sang things like:

Wham
Diana Ross
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton
Elaine Paige and Barbara Streisand
Irene Cara
Barry Manilow

Not your kind of thing?

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 10:00

Don't go then?

Carmenere · 21/11/2008 10:00

C'mon now PJ Harvey is bad enough when she sings it herself, the idea of karaoke PJ is unthinkable

NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2008 10:03

Yes, I am being silly, a bit.

Who or what is Irene Cara?

Wham is fine. The rest scare me, a bit.

harleyd · 21/11/2008 10:04

im just picturing it.."i'll show you my gun, my uzi weighs a ton, because im public enemy number one" i think i'd like public enemy karaoke actually lol

xtc · 21/11/2008 10:04

omg can you imagine karaoke public enemy

fight the power

chequersandchess · 21/11/2008 10:05

Shame it's not xmas yet, you culd have done fairytale of new york

RubySlippers · 21/11/2008 10:05

isn't the whole point of karaoke to get steaming drunk, clasp your best friend round the neck and racously sing "i will survive"

tis not the time for navel gazing introspection

claw3 · 21/11/2008 10:05

Find a karaoke where you can sing Belle and Seb?

I would have thought mainstream pubs/clubs etc have mainstream karaoke. If you want hip hop etc, go to a hip hop pub/club

mrsruffallo · 21/11/2008 10:06

Irene Cara sang 'fame'
You have to sing that at karaoke, tis the law

xtc · 21/11/2008 10:07

Irene Cara fame you know

live forever and whatnot

NotQuiteCockney · 21/11/2008 10:07

Actually, we have some MC Hammer on the Wii that you can sing along with and it's bloody difficult. It sounds easy, but it's really really hard.

Come on, surely Billie Holiday isn't too much to ask for. They had a tiny bit of Nina Simone. No Jacques Brel. I didn't even bother looking for Gainsbourg. (Should have put English-speaking in the title, I guess! )
