Need to get this off my chest before Monday - It's about Red Heads !

I was telling a tale in the playground about how i'd put my foot in it in the maternity ward.
The jist was that my DD was born with loads of hair, looked like a little monkey but it was dark brown.
Anyway a woman on my ward said oh hasn't she got lovely hair and without looking up from my magazine I said yes thank god it's not red like her dad's. Of course I looked up and she and her newborn had red hair.
I cringed, went back to the magazine she walked off.
If you heard this tale and had a son with red hair would YOU be mortally offended ??

I ask because on Thursday this happened and the woman who is pig ignorant at the best of times on Friday said hello to the person I was talking to and made a point of not saying hello to me, she's just looking for a reason to kick off again, we've had a few moments in the past.
I know it's petty but she has sat in my living room and told me my youngest has got better looking with age so she's not adverse to putting her foot in it herself.

I just know this is leading to an atmospher tomorrow grrr.

Our DD is the only one in our all family with red hair. And the day after DD was born, my DH cousin said " Oh she is lucky to not have that carrot hair colour". I was so sensitive then and got very upset! It took me a while to want to see the cousin again.... but so many people comment now how beautiful DD(3yrs old) is with her red curly hair, that I am the proudest mum in town!!!
But when I read your story, I can see how some people with red hair children can get upset... I would be ok with it but the THANK GOD in your sentence is a bit much I think!!
And for the point of view of the other lady with the new born at the hospital, she must have been shocked of someone saying "Thank God my child doesn't have red hair like her dad's" TERRIBLE from and for a new mum...

Sunandmoon - just thought of another comment she made recently, that if I had another baby then it might be a boy and my work on earth would then be done. Would that offend you when you have three beautiful daughters and would be delighted with another girl ? I just ignored it.
I'm not blameless and am not pretending to be, but as said in the first post she's not adverse to foot in mouth disease herself.

you sound as bad as each other

let it go

sunandmoon · 17/11/2008 13:28

All this talking about children is terrible... why anybody wants to have any conversation about the other ones children like that?
I can't stand it...and don't really understand why you both don't give up talking or even stop crossing path of each others...not very good if YOUR daughters and HER kids hear all these conversations but even more the other people kids too...
Goose bumps for me, I don't understand it!

HarrogateMum · 17/11/2008 13:32

I am not answering the original question, but wanted to put in my own experience.

I have 3 kids, 2 of whom are full on redheads (and I mean the carrot/orange colour - see my profile for pics!). My DD is not aware of it yet, but DT1 has already had comments made to him by older kids about his hair, and has said to me that he does not want to have red hair anymore. He has just turned 4........and is not even at school yet. So clearly there is a lot of opinion about redheads and people taking the piss/bullying them.

All I can do is hope he goes to school with and interacts with non-judgmental people......whats the chance do you think?

PeachyAndTheSucklingBas · 17/11/2008 13:40

'if I had another baby then it might be a boy and my work on earth would then be done. Would that offend you when you have three beautiful daughters and would be delighted with another girl ?' thoughtless but normal comment- s a mum to 4 boys I know that well!

Really think that you and your friends need to work on your social skolls a bit, far easier than cleaning up the aftermath tbh

(and if you do have a 4th girl all one gender famillies are fab )

sunandmoon · 17/11/2008 13:42

HarrogateMum Lovely pictures, the kids are beautiful too!
I am not surprise now that kids feel different because they have red hair colours... it doesn't obviously come from the older children but from what their parents say!
I am shocked and sorry to read that at 4 your DT1 had already had comments on his hair colour! Can I ask you what you answer him?

pinkspook · 17/11/2008 13:42

hello KatieDD this thread has made me laugh! Hope you are doing OK - I am getting referred for IVF soon woo hoo! xx

PeachyAndTheSucklingBas · 17/11/2008 13:42

(btw we're in Wales and red hair is more common and seems to be treatd as a gift. My Mum always liked her waist length red ringlets as a child too- Welsh family living in England- lets hope things do change for the rest eh?)

pinkspook · 17/11/2008 13:44

Just to clarify - not made me laugh at redheads...made me laugh at all the misunderstandings etc ...

KatieDD · 17/11/2008 13:44

Hello Huni, am great well apart from all this shite and DH being made redundant on Friday.
Am so pleased for you that's fantastic news, look forward to hearing you've got your blue line.

As for my social skills, well yes I never claimed to have done anything but put my foot in it, but there's no need for this level of reaction is there, can we all just agree it's a tad immature ?

pinkspook · 17/11/2008 13:50

I agree the woman sounds a nightmare! I would be tempted to avoid her in future (silly bint) sounds like she is finding a reason to be arsey with you.

Thats shit about your DH has he got something else sorted yet? My DH also made redundant now (finishes by end of Nov) has an interview next week (fingers crossed)

Have you soretd your referall out for liverpool yet?

xx

thumbwitch · 17/11/2008 13:50

HarrogateMum - that is so sad, but perhaps you could tell your redheads that they are special and that people are really jealous of their hair colour because their own is so booooring. Or something like that. It should NEVER be seen as a handicap.

HarrogateMum · 17/11/2008 13:52

sunandmoon and thumbwitch - thats just what I do, tell them that they are special and that people are just jealous because they want it!

KatieDD · 17/11/2008 13:53

I am getting the letters sorted tonight actually at the GP's.
Absolutely cannot wait, DH is still trying to bribe me with a new kitchen and eternity ring instead though he'll come round.
Maybe I'm getting too upset about this but on top of everything else i just could do without it you know ?

onthewarpath · 17/11/2008 13:58

Harrogatemum, your DCs look really gorgeous!

pinkspook · 17/11/2008 13:59

I know, everything feels very exaggerated when all this other stuff is happening, she sounds like a twonk though and as though its less to do with redheads (who by the way I think are gorgeous but I know what you mean about bullying my sister is a full on redhead, milky skin etc and hated it for a time) and more to do with her being and idiot!

Good luck tonight getting your letters sorted and keep me posted on your progress xx

This thread is 11 years old ffs and you’ve bumped it to ask someone to explain something? 🙄🙄🙄🙄

HBStowe · 16/05/2019 22:33

Of all the stupid reasons to resurrect a thread that’s over a decade old and you go for some ignorant tripe comparing a comment about hair colour to racism Hmm

marylou1977 · 16/05/2019 22:53

I don’t get it. I LOVE red hair. Wish I had the coloring to carry it.

DontCallMeShitley · 16/05/2019 22:59

Zombie thread.

Treaclesweet · 16/05/2019 23:13

I'm a red head and honestly, I would have thought you were fucking rude. Both times.

Treaclesweet · 16/05/2019 23:14

Ah bollocks I've been bitten...
