to think that Billy Bob and Zak Make a Porno (or whatever their names are) is quite an offensive title?

Saw this advertised in huge letters on the side of a bus today, and thought it quite offensive. Am I getting old?

Surprise, thanks so much for starting this thread. I too have found it offensive, but wouldn't have got round to complaining if you hadn't started this, and thanks too to the person who added the ASA link. I have complained.

mabanana · 09/11/2008 21:53

I hope everyone on this thread who agrees with me complains. It can make a big difference. This has caused massive controversy in the US, and if allowed, will just make things worse.

nancy75 · 09/11/2008 21:54

what things will it make worse?

pointydog · 09/11/2008 21:58

I agree with op. SHouldn't be on the buses. no no no

Liffey · 09/11/2008 22:02

Dreadful. Can just imagine my dc aged six saying 'what's a PORNO?'. arghgh

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 22:03

interesting debate.is our parenting influence so insubstantial that the word "porn" a bus undermine/undo the good work?will children scarred by mere glance of word?why cant we as parents be robust enough to discuss unsavoury topics

My dd would still want to know what the word within the title actually meant. It looks like such a short simple word. She would wonder why she didn't already know it. if she didn't get a satisfactory answer from me she'd probably ask her teacher!

pointydog · 09/11/2008 22:11

"is our parenting influence so insubstantial that the word "porn" a bus undermine/undo the good work?"

No, of course not.

"will children scarred by mere glance of word?"

No, of course not.

"why cant we as parents be robust enough to discuss unsavoury topics"

I am robust enough to discuss every topic. However, I'm sure most people weren't planning on discussing pornography to 5-10 year olds. I don't really want to discuss it with my 12 yr old. However, as this word will now be known by pretty much all children and wild variations in meaning will abound, I'd better get on with it.

I also object to teh bland acceptance of the word 'porno' in general parlance. yeah, whatever, porno. Women acting as purely sexula objects for the gratification of a couple of male bozos (but funny bozos so we love them really), being portrayed as Great Fun to young teens and pre-teens is something I object to too.

Liffey · 09/11/2008 22:12

Absolutely pointy. they objectify women as sexual objects but they're so 'lovable' you're a lemon-sucker if you object.

pointydog · 09/11/2008 22:13

Ask their teacher? They will all be talking about it to their friends. A sexy word that you need to know to be in with the in crowd.

You'd better explain it properly or their heads will be filled with all sorts of nonsense by lots of small children.

pointydog · 09/11/2008 22:15

this si far beyond a robust parental chat. This is playground gossip, who knows and who doesn't, you likes it and who doesn't. Who's bovvered

Beachcomber · 09/11/2008 22:18

ITA with pointydog.

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 22:37

pragmatically our dc are bombarded with sexual/consumer/aggressively marketed stimuli, doesn't mean they succumb.parents can act as the moral/ethical/judgemetal buffer

media is ++++ saturated with schlep detritus not all see=believe

policywonk · 09/11/2008 22:42

But what's wrong with objecting to the detritus? Why should we sit here and passively put up with it?

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 22:49

have no probs with disagreeing-have prob with simplistic see media=believe media.not that pernicious

beanieb · 09/11/2008 23:02

Same question as Nancy75...

policywonk · 09/11/2008 23:05

Well, it's not a question of belief, unless you're getting extremely existential on my ass. The mainstreaming of porn is an accomplished fact, I'd say. I just think it's repulsive, and I feel well within my rights to complain about it.

confusedmamma · 09/11/2008 23:13

I agree with you entirely. If you complain I will too. Porno is such a ridiculous word for something that is so offensive to most people. I have been inspired to complain by the Ross/Brand affair. I have been finding Jonathon Ross offensive for quite a while now and I was so relieved I was not alone. I think we are the silent, seething majority and I think the more we complain the better !!!

policywonk · 09/11/2008 23:20

LOL confused. I've already complained. The ASA link is further up/down the thread (depending on how you're reading it).

ScottishMummy · 10/11/2008 09:44

would you all have individually complained prior to this thread or has group dyanamics got you all het up

mayorquimby · 10/11/2008 10:23

"would you all have individually complained prior to this thread or has group dyanamics got you all het up
"

seems just like the ross/brand thing. 2 complaints when it actually aired, but now that people can smell a witch hunt lets all complain even if the majority of us have not seen the offensive article in question

onthewarpath · 10/11/2008 12:44

to the OP Have not seen this particular advertissement but pretty sure it would have ennoyed me. But then, I get ennoyed at all the adds with nacked bodies or rude wording on, as I find nudity has often no relation to the product avertised and rudness is not exactly appealing itself. This adds are tasteless.

SexyDomesticatedDad · 10/11/2008 12:55

Whilst you are about it please get all the suppliers / shops that sell t-shirts to litle girls with 'future porn star' on the front to remove them too - its not funny or clever or ironic in any way. Don't have an issue with the actual film title or content per se but should have restricted advertising.
