to think that Billy Bob and Zak Make a Porno (or whatever their names are) is quite an offensive title?

Saw this advertised in huge letters on the side of a bus today, and thought it quite offensive. Am I getting old?

meh, looks hillarious and i can't wait to see it.

beanieb · 09/11/2008 15:05

The film isn't about putting someone's girlfriend in a porn movie, it's about a female friend deciding with a male friend to make some money by making a porn film. I've not seen it but I imagine (knowing the main actor and the director's work) that it's quite crude humour in some placeswhich may not be to some people's taste but which other's may find funny.

PuzzleRocks · 09/11/2008 15:18

My local theatre had posters up advertising The Rape of Lucrece. Would that have people up in arms too or is it okay because it is a highbrow play?

wessexgirl · 09/11/2008 15:23

It's a bit much for the side of a bus, I think, though I'm not bothered at the film title.

I remember going on the London Underground for the first time when I was about ten and being at posters for 'The Stud' and 'The Bitch' at every station.

PottyCock · 09/11/2008 15:45

sorry - i've complained. I don't think it's acceptable for young kids to be introduced to the idea of this industry like this.

i'm not a prude but i think this is bloody awful.

PottyCock · 09/11/2008 15:46

and i'm right there with you dittany.

'Love, Actually' was offensive in just about every conceivable aspect (with the exception of the marvellous Emma Thompson, of course)

titfortwat · 09/11/2008 17:34

it dosen't bother me at all. You can always make something up if a child asks what a porno is or change the subject. They have been making films like this for years.

Watching the trailer it reminds me of the confessions of..... films.

wehaveallbeenthere · 09/11/2008 17:46

Saw the movie. It isn't about porn but there is full male nudity and it isn't for children. How it got the rating it did is more about who the director may know.
If a child asks about what the word porn means it is going to be more about what you wish to tell them (or not tell them). They will be confronted with all sorts of words (and ideas) that you would shield them from if you could. They will also be confronting you with lots of surprising things (well before you think appropriate).
I would be more concerned about what a person does in a general eatery than this movie.

beanieb · 09/11/2008 17:51

Wasn't the leading man's last film all about weed? Pineapple express?

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 18:31

all this talking about it makes me want to see it.if it isn't porno enough do i get a refund

genuinely don't get the fuss. is complete avoidance (if me and my child don't see it means it isn't so)and complaining a strategy?.an 18 certificate that your dc wont see.you cant censor all media because some parents find phrase "porno" offensive and explaining it difficult

comes with being a parent the awkward question moment

surprise · 09/11/2008 18:44

PLEASE will you realise that it's not about the film, or what the film contains, it's about advertising it. Huge difference. Wehaveallbeenthere - I have an older child and so I do know that children can ask awkward questions, but I really don't think it's a subject that needs to be discussed - they need to learn about love and sex first.

I'm also very offended by t-shirts with swear words on and people swearing in front my children. It's disrespectful and shows a complete disregard for other people's feelings. But that's what some of the posters on here seem to think - that anyone can do what they like, when they like and tough luck for anyone who doesn't like it. I blame Thatcher.

policywonk · 09/11/2008 18:46

'I blame Thatcher'

Can I have that on a T-shirt please

surprise · 09/11/2008 18:58

Actually policywonk you've just given me an idea for a birthday present for DP .

Hulababy · 09/11/2008 19:00

Luckily not seen this. 6yo DD would have read it and asked questins - ones I would not be prepared to answer. Shouldn't be allowed IMO.

policywonk · 09/11/2008 19:11

surprise

I have already found myself trying to explain objectification to my DS1 when he was about four, and it was a right brain-strain:

wehaveallbeenthere · 09/11/2008 19:56

surprise, You cannot censor life. Of course it isn't good to have all these issues come up until your child is ready for them. If you could censor everything then this thread wouldn't be posted.
You'll just have to do the best you can because now it's the advertisement with the word "porno" and tomorrow it's something else. That is how life is.
I have a 22 year old (just moving out Thank God) and I remember him starting school and coming home and the first time (before school when he was about 4) he walked in on my husband and I having sex. We told him we were just "wrestling" and after he started school and he walked in, he just turned and walked out. Later he said he "knew" we weren't "wrestling" (he didn't really understand what we were doing to any significant extent) but knew it wasn't "wrestling" as people don't do that in the nude. Not those exact words but yes...he was still too young for the Greek history etc.
YANBU but expect more of the same.

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 20:22

childrem's exposure to words/concepts some find unacceptable.isn't it avoidant to not acknowledge certain things.as difficult as one may find it

a liberal robust society should be able to tolerate a range of media portrayals and diverse opinions and yes that includes bus and bill board representations

so to query is it
the representation/visibility of word "porno" the need to explain any dc queries
parental discomfort

bitty provocative to say some
"that's what some of the posters on here seem to think - that anyone can do what they like, when they like and tough luck for anyone who doesn't like it"

who did you have in mind i don't seen anyone being treated like that - have seen range of opinions

don't mean to sound defeatist but wait until dc ask about sex/drugs.they will watch an 18cert too young, will see unsavoury images esp internet, dvd.inevitable

policywonk · 09/11/2008 20:43

Well from my POV, porn is an exclusively adult activity. There's just no need for it to be advertised in the mainstream media. I mean, I'm guessing that a film called 'Zack and Miri have sex' would never get advertised on the side of buses - but I'd be a whole lot happier about that than I am about the porn option.

wehaveallbeenthere · 09/11/2008 21:29

You are all too young to remember the Calvin Klein billboards with Brooke Shields? Her ad about "What comes between me and my Calvins?" "Nothing at all". She wasn't wearing underwear.
She was also 12 when she made "Pretty Baby" and was not much older when "Blue Lagoon" was made.
You can take your pick but there is far more visual porn to be concerned about than just a printed word on a busside.

wessexgirl · 09/11/2008 21:32

I remember seeing 'No Sex Please, We're British' advertised on the side of buses.

wehaveallbeenthere · 09/11/2008 21:34

What about all the Bond movies and books? You can't possibly think that naming Bond women names like Pussygalore isn't influencing. Still they have a woman above Bond in the agency.
It's an old battle...it will still be around as long as people are. The most you can do is prepare your children the best you can and hope that they can make good decisions from your input.
YANBU

nancy75 · 09/11/2008 21:44

i am not really bothered by this personally, but interstingly i have just heard an ad for this film on the radio and they just call it zack and miri, no mention of porno in the spoken add
