to think that Billy Bob and Zak Make a Porno (or whatever their names are) is quite an offensive title?

Saw this advertised in huge letters on the side of a bus today, and thought it quite offensive. Am I getting old?

doesn't bother me personally, i'm a fan of kevin smith's films and am looking forward to seeing it. am quite suprised that its on the side of buses though, seeing as the original poster ad in america couldn't even be shown

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 00:10

oh where quick want to see that

ScottishMummy: You want to see my hairy front bottom?!

luminarphrases · 09/11/2008 00:12

popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/09/kevin-smith-por.html

nothing particularly racy...

beanieb · 09/11/2008 00:13

maybe ou are a prude or maybe it's just not your thing.

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 00:16

was generically referring to zack et miri, but hey if you exhibitionist show it on a bus

someone on MN will quickly squawk "oh my giddy aunty/society today/etc"

EightiesChick · 09/11/2008 00:17

YANBU. I can't understand how Seth Rogen has made a career out of the same unfunny character over and over again. I didn't find Knocked Up funny at all. And the 'porno' in the title starts to make them look desperate for an audience by whatever means. Did Pineapple Express fall very short of expectations or something?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/11/2008 00:18

ScottishMummy: the state of my untended front bottom, it would definitely have to be a double decker. God, I've had too much wine....good night, all!

ScottishMummy · 09/11/2008 00:21

LOL CHA perhaps a bendy bus more yar thang

bamboo · 09/11/2008 00:42

YANBU, dh and I were discussing this tonight and both agreed it was a bit much, emblazoned as it is, on buses.

I don't think I normally shy away from such discussions and am all for answering a straight question with a straight answer but don't fancy explaining to dd (6) what a porno is. Her cousin is called Zack so I can just imagine her pointing it out!

policywonk · 09/11/2008 10:46

Bang on Loshad, that's exactly my objection. Explaining porn to a five-year-old is like explaining people trafficking or serial murder - yes, I could do it if I had to, but why the fuck would I want to? Particularly as the behest of some brainless piece of Hollywood shite?

I've complained to the ASA.

Starbear · 09/11/2008 11:30

I'm going to join you. I'm going to complain. For the women of the future this should not be mainstream.

Lauriefairycake · 09/11/2008 11:45

I mind the word porno slipping into the mainstream and literally in your face on the side of buses or on billboards.

I have no problem explaining anything and I am not remotely prudish.

Where does the line get drawn, seriously?

The erosion means that eventually there will be films advertised saying "Mimi gives the best blow jobs" within our lifetime advertised in public

is there a line anywhere?

Cos I think there is, just not sure where it is yet.

bongosmum · 09/11/2008 11:49

am i alone then in thinking the cover of 'lads mags' like nuts etc should be displayed at eye level in supermarkets? i have complained to asda...my husband tells me i am a prude. i just think more and more our standards are being eroded - where does it stop?

mamadiva · 09/11/2008 11:51

It's called Zak and Miri make a porno

And it looks really good actually

But have to say was a bit when I first heard it last weekend!

luminarphrases · 09/11/2008 12:09

but apart from the posters, its not 'porn' in the mainstream. its a comedy movie about two friends trying to earn some money through making a porn movie. its not women being exploited, its a 18 cert film from a director well known for his more 'adult' humour.

parents taking their kids to see the dark knight/ iron man i do mind, and i do think its daft to put the title on the sides of buses, but i think people do get oversensitive...

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 09/11/2008 12:21

'And it looks really good actually' yeah right

my ds is 5 he 'sounds out' everything and takes delight in it

'porno' is not something i want to explain to him
if that makes me 'oversensitive' then i hold my hands up

not nice

policywonk · 09/11/2008 12:25

Well, you can't say 'aside from the posters it's not in the mainstream', because there are posters (and TV advertisements), so it is in the mainstream. If it were to be released in cinemas with restricted advertising in lad mags and so on I wouldn't have such a problem (well, I'd still think it was revolting and depressing, but I wouldn't have anything concrete to complain about, aside from the existence of porn itself...)

mamadiva · 09/11/2008 12:27

NO it's fair enough that it shouldnt be all over billboards etc but I dont think its wrong that a film should have the word porno in it.

As for quoting me

'And it looks really good actually' yeah right

Yes I do think it l;ooks good so dont try and mock my opinion, we are all entitled to one.

luminarphrases · 09/11/2008 12:35

but its not porn in the mainstream, its a comedy about making a porn movie to earn some cash. the only reason its got on the side of buses is the unexplicable success of seth rogen. i've already said i don't think it should be on the side of buses, but i do get why they've done it, especially seeing as kevin smith films usually only get his relatively small amount of fans in the cinema. i do think it is oversensitive when posters call it the objectification of women etc. when they don't appear to know anything more than appears on that poster. sorry.

policywonk · 09/11/2008 12:41

It might seem semantic (although it's not so semantic when you're explaining it to a child), but it's putting the idea of porn in the mainstream, even if the product itself is not pornographic. I think that everything related to porn should be strictly adults-only, and preferably exclusively in opt-in media.

mamadiva · 09/11/2008 12:47

Thing is though they release movies that will offend someone somewhere so we cant really expect them not to use words some dont like, scenes some might not like or storylines which may eb touchy at the time.

Its not realistic its a movie noone is forced to watch it.

surprise · 09/11/2008 13:38

It's not about the film!! It's about advertising the title where many people (young children) will read it and want to know what it means. I don't feel that children should be exposed to these sorts of ideas so young.

And I'm no prude - wouldn't want to watch this, but because it looks like typical US crap, not because it has the word "porno" in the title.
