Johnny Rotten once said about swear words that they are only words. I agreed with him then, but I disagree with him now. Words convey a thousand meanings.
It's not the word that people have the problem with, it's the meaning behind it.
I wouldn't like to have to explain to my dd what porn means. And for those who think they can get away with saying that it's a film made for adults, are you sure you have children? Do you really think your child would just say "ok" and leave it at that?
Our attitude as a society is far too tolerant. We don't complain. We just think "Oh, that's not very nice, never mind I'll just have to explain to dd/ds that it's an adult film". We seem to just sigh and get on with it.
I was watching BBC3 last night about the most cringey Pop songs. It was around 7.30pm and the word "tits" came on and was repeated, along with an image of a large breasted woman gyrating into the camera. My dd was watching and saw too much before I finally found the bloody remote. Now people would just say "oh turn it over or off if you don't like it". It's this accept, put up and shut up attitude that I hate the most.
You might be comfortable explaining to your kids what porn means, you might feel ok about them reading it on the side of a bus, you might even think that "tits" is no big deal. But not everyone thinks the same. We have the right to speak out, to complain. Why do people try to stop that? Fine, you feel ok about it, good for you. Equally then it wouldn't affect you if the rest of us complained and had the offending ad removed would it? It wouldn't matter one iota to you and the rest of us would feel better.
Is that so painful for you to accept?
