I am so fucking angry. On my lunch break I parked up to run into a shop, it?s a road in the middle of town and there?s parking spaces each side of the road ifykwim, there?s not many shops, mainly residential.

Anyway, couldn?t get a parking space very near to the shop so was a bout 10 cars away from it, as I pulled in this woman pulled in beside me with her baby (approx 6-7 months old) in a car seat, in the front seat! - I thought this was completely stupid but gets better.

I went into the shop and when I came back out and was getting into my car noticed that little baby is sitting in car on his own the car is, as I said about 10 cars from the shop so not like she could throw an eye out the window to him, plus its a large shop anyway and the desk is far from the door, very busy road with both cars and pedestrians - I sat for a minute because I was worried - seen the lock up on the car so presumably unlocked so anyone could pop open the door and take the baby etc..

10 minutes later the stupid bitch arrives out with a bag of shopping.

I?m so angry. So many people out there would give their right arm to have a baby and actually take care of him/her responsibly.

grrr...

Pixies. Evil pixies.

mabanana · 07/11/2008 15:05

I think you did a good thing to sit and watch until the mother came back. That was responsible, but I'm glad you've calmed down now!

BarbieLovesKen · 07/11/2008 15:10

Lockets, I dont have a clue about how far the locks on the car go up and down when locked/ unlocked - I just seen the locks up and presumed it was unlocked. Could be wrong, but it looked that way.

Ronaldinhio - the baby was already awake.

@ combustiblelemon.

Ronaldinhio · 07/11/2008 15:16

so what!!

child left awake and unattended crisis

It might not be what you chose to do but I fail to see how it would make you angry let alone fucking angry.

doesn't seem dangerous, not ideal granted but hardly the end of the world

Bride1 · 07/11/2008 15:18

You could post on AIBU that the Pope has a balcony and someone would tell you that you made them effing mad and you were being very, very unreasonable to say that, and of course we shouldn't have faith schools and sausage rolls kill babies.

Ronaldinhio · 07/11/2008 15:20

do they?
what about fruitshoots?

can popes eat sausage rolls?

pamelat · 07/11/2008 15:24

She was in the wrong, you were in the right but heaven forbid I "judge"

You can sleep easy knowing you did the right thing.

The leaving the baby scares me in case maybe she was the child minder etc, I would want to know if anyone left my DD in the car. Yes I am PFB

BarbieLovesKen · 07/11/2008 15:26

Pamelat - I was thinking that too, to be honest.

I'm presumbing this was the baby's mother but could have just as easy been CM, aunt etc..

Wouldn't have left baby myself but then I did leave mine asleep in the garden. As Bramshott says, unlocked also has safety advantages. When I've left older children alone at home for short spaces, I've always left the back door unlocked; I want to know they can get out quickly in case of fire.

cory · 07/11/2008 15:30

My MIL left her newborn baby in the greengrocer's. It was only when she was checking over her shopping at home that she realised something was missing...

In her defence, she was exhausted and had PND. I'm sure the baby should not have been taken from her; she's been a most caring mother since.

But this could explain the unlocked door.

Simplysally · 07/11/2008 15:37

My dd was often in her carry-seat in the front next to me but the car I had then, didn't even have an airbag on the driver's side. I wouldn't have left her unattended in the car though.

It's upsetting when you see children potentially neglected but you did the right thing in waiting. Out of interest, what would you have done if the 'wrong person' had opened the door though?

ScottishMummy · 07/11/2008 15:38

Sheesh what a harsh OP.you presume her to be a bitch and irresponsible.maybe just tired/forgetful,you dont know her circumstances

sad to use such emotive and judgemental language. ease off a bit

are you suggesting removing her baby and giving it to a responsible person who wants a baby (and who wont forget to lock the door)

thought not - so calm down

BouncingTurtle · 07/11/2008 15:52

Perhaps YANBU about leaving the baby in an unlocked car, can see your point, probably not wise but maybe it was a genuine oversight? Maybe she had finally got the baby to sleep and didn't want to disturb him/her.
But YABU about the car seat being in the front.
I have my son (10mo) in the front of my car and have done ever since he was born as I have switched off the airbag. With him in the front, he can see me which keeps him calm and happy and therefore much less of a distraction to me.
And YABVVVVU being so angry and disgusted, and calling the woman a 'stupid bitch'.
How judgy you are.

BouncingTurtle · 07/11/2008 15:53

I meant a genuine oversight about the lock, not leaving the baby, btw!

mummag · 07/11/2008 15:58

cant believe how many of you would leave your child unattended and go shopping, is it really that difficult to take your kids with you. I have three and walk everywhere and would not dream of leaving any of them unattended outside a shop whilst i nipped in. Anything could have happened to this child and the op has a right to be angry about it too.

Bride1 · 07/11/2008 15:59

Dunno about Pope Benny,Ronaldinho, but John Paul looked like a man who knew about Ginsters.

You can tell by looking at their eyes.

angelswithdirtyfaces · 07/11/2008 16:06

No air bag? I would'nt do the leave baby in an unlocked car and go shopping myself.

2manychips · 07/11/2008 16:11

Wouldnt dream of leaving my dd in a car whilst shopping either.

LadyOfRoffle · 07/11/2008 16:19

Hmmm... I have to agree with OP. Well, definatly about leaving baby in the car ~ how hard would it be to carry baby in?

Bramshott · 07/11/2008 16:55

It's not really about leaving the baby in the car though is it? We all make different parenting choices and what's acceptable to some people is not acceptable to others. The point is really over whether it's worth expending the energy to be "disgusted" and "so fucking angry", and to start a thread about it, as opposed to being a little surprised and perhaps mildly concerned.

stephla · 07/11/2008 17:06

I can see why you were upset about this as it is against all today's "rules" and I certainly wouldn't do it. But I wouldn't worry too much.

When I was a baby back in the late 60s, mothers used to park all the children in their he old prams outside the shops (with the dogs!) There was no room for those prams in those tiny old shops. I don't think we came to any harm, so that baby was probably alright too. At least it was indoors!

We also had to have the baby (in a baby seat) in the front because in a lot of older cars the seat belts are too short to go around the baby seat. These old cars usually don't have passenger side airbags.

needmorecoffee · 07/11/2008 17:13

babies have been snatched from cars. The woman was irresponsible.
