To be baffled by buyers who won't pay till they have put ALL their shopping into bags at the supermarket checkout? When there's a queue waiting behind them?

I am always baffled when people with lots of shopping pack everything first and pay last at supermarket checkouts.

Why are some people totally oblivious to holding up the queue. Is it due to absent mindedness? selfishness? Or some logical reason?

It really slows things down for all those waiting behind them. AIBU to find it annoying?

surely if they pay first then pack they would still be in the way... i will happily hold people up...

Eniddo · 27/10/2008 17:51

I dont understand

would you rather they pay and then pack? wouldnt they still be in the way?

Merlin · 27/10/2008 17:51

YABU. Even if you pay first - you still have to pack it all so what difference does it make?

Eniddo · 27/10/2008 17:52

You are not being unreasonable, it is really annoying. I hate ones that spend ages counting out their money, ones that stand behind you gawping at your shopping, ones that give you the evil eye because they want to go infront.... I just hate shopping.

pippibluestocking · 27/10/2008 17:53

Don't understand - even if they pay and then pack, everyone behind them will still have to wait until they have finished {hmm}.

slayerette · 27/10/2008 17:53

But the checkout staff don't start putting your stuff in until the previous person has packed and gone anyway so what's the difference?

NoLongerMyFirstPost · 27/10/2008 17:53

Surely either way you have to wait - for them to pay then finish packing or for them to finishing packing and then pay....

I'm a finish packing then pay person, sorry

shop online

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 27/10/2008 17:54

I misread the op Thought it was pay then pack.

YABU.

expatinscotland · 27/10/2008 17:54

I pack everything before paying.

I don't give a stuff who's in the queue behind me.

If they want to go fast they can go to the express queue or use self-serve or fast track.

It's downright rude to check the customer behind through whilst the person at the counter hasn't cleared out.

PhantomOfTheChocolateCakeAvena · 27/10/2008 17:56

I, like most of Derby, put them in a bag after the cashier has scanned them. Then pay when she/he's finished. It would take the same amount of time to put them directly into the trolley wouldn't it?

bubblagirl · 27/10/2008 17:56

i dont spose it make much difference pay and then hang around to pack shopping or pack shopping and pay they'll still be there same amount of time cashiers wont put anyone elses shopping through until other person has packed

i always pack first so i can pay and then leave rather than pay and still stand around packing

alphabetsoup · 27/10/2008 17:56

well it's actually very easy to pay then move aside slightly to finish packing while the next customer makes a start.

LouMacca · 27/10/2008 17:57

agree with expat

MOrticiaAdams · 27/10/2008 17:58

So, in amongst packing all your bags, you expect people to have their purse/card/cash ready for when the cashier is ready? I don't know about anyone else, but its hard enough trying to catch all the shopping and get them reasonably packed, without the added problem of having to either stop midway to get your money out or juggle holding a purse too! You are being totally unreasonable.

expatinscotland · 27/10/2008 17:59

'well it's actually very easy to pay then move aside slightly to finish packing while the next customer makes a start.'

it isn't when you only go once a month because of distance and you're packing food for a month for 5 people.

don't see where i should hurry up in such a case.

the person behind us could see how much stuff we had and know it isn't going to be quick.

MOrticiaAdams · 27/10/2008 18:01

Not in my experience it isn't Alphabet. Its a PITA! Not only do you have yourself and possibly a child/dh with you at the end of the till, you now have the family of the next customer! Not to mention the plastic bag pile, that they so helpfully open so they are all over the place and someone elses shopping too!

VersdeSociete · 27/10/2008 18:02

If you pay when you haven't finished packing, they sometimes starts shoving t'other person's shopping at you whilst you frantically pack and the bags start breaking. shudder.

MOrticiaAdams · 27/10/2008 18:03

Rest assured Expat, if you are in front of me at the till, I will wait patiently and smile sweetly at the person behind me getting the hump!

TeenyTinyTorya · 27/10/2008 18:04

That does annoy me - but it annoys me more when I move on to the self-service (15 items or fewer) to find that there is someone standing there scanning an entire trolley of food v-e-r-y v-e-r-y- s-l-o-w-l-y. YANBU.

heavy · 27/10/2008 18:04

This is why I LOVE it when the checkout person scans in time with your packing! It makes my day when I am putting the last thing in the bag and they are telling me how much I owe - no guilt about person behind, creates illusion that I am efficient person who is in control of her shopping and her life. I always look out for the same people on the till when I shop!
(Need to get out more I think )

compo · 27/10/2008 18:05

yes maybe I'll pay first and then when they start running your shopping through the scanner I'll pack that as well
