To think women over the age of 21 should not wear their hair in bunches?

It looks ridiculous.
and not cooky or cute or fun.

ach whatever - if we all looked the same life would be pretty dull!

I agree there's a big difference between discreetish low bunches or pigtails, and ones that stick out of the sides of your head or, God forbid, the top of your head, a la 'Baby Spice.'

I particularly like very short low bunches in choppy haircuts

The last time I tried to wear pigtails it all went horribly wrong - my darling 2 yr old DD bent one of the arms of my glasses some time ago and everytime I moved my head my hair pulled my specs wonky {weary sigh}.

YABU, 21 is still young. Over 30 then no, a low pony if fine, though at my age its for the gym only. I still wore two plaits when my hair was long enough and its looked OK, I think.

I thought about this thread today when I saw a woman in the swimming pool with low bunches, she had short curly hair too, so they looked like two blonde tennis balls stuck to the back of her head.

mumeeee · 26/10/2008 23:41

YAbu if someone wants to wear nunches that's fine with me.

shubiedoo · 26/10/2008 23:44

Oh, lighten up. I love wearing my hair in (low, discreet, bow-less) bunches and I'm 38!

hellish · 27/10/2008 00:16

Aren't pony tails and bunches the same thing?

gigglewitch · 27/10/2008 00:21

me too shubiedoo (sorry if i can't spell your name)

Disambiguation from Wikipedia (long word also courtesy of Wikipedia)

"A pigtail is another name for hair styled into a large braid that extends down or out from the head. In analogy to the ponytail hairstyle and the long, free-flowing tail of a horse, a pigtail is named for the visual resemblance of a thick, irregularly-tensioned hair braid to the kinked tail of a pig. A person's hairstyle may consist of one or more individual pigtails.

In some regional usages of English, pigtails are considered synonymous with a symmetric pair of hair bunches, regardless of whether each "bunch" is braided or left loose. This usage is not evident in American literature where one frequently finds references to "two pigtails" denoting two braids."

Personally I would say:
ponytail = one, left loose
plait = one, plaited (AKA 'braid' in US English)
bunches = two, left loose
pigtails = two, plaited

My 'rules' for wearing these: plait or ponytail is fine for anyone.
Bunches or pigtails coming out of your head above the ear: recommended only for children, fancy dress, or people whose style is a bit 'kooky'. If you wear purple stripey knee socks then go ahead (but of course if that is your style then you don't need my permission). If you're wearing 'normal' clothes then you might expect a few odd looks, but people are genrally more polite in real life than on a thread that starts with 'am I being unreasonable'.

i always have my hair in bunches when i'm at the gym as it cools the back of my neck and i therefore sweat less. if i have a ponytail my hair gets all straggly and knotty.

pigtails rule for me i'm afraid(and i'm 34), lol

ps.....only in the gym tho

nope

feel free to not like it (I don't do it often but its at that too-short-for - a - ponytail stage)
