to be happy with the education my children are receiving in thier state schools?

I really am quite content with their education. I'm happy with fact that they mix with children from homes of varying incomes, and a multitude of ethnic backgrounds (in DS1's class anyway)

I do not regret the fact that we cannot afford to send them to a private school. (If I'd been that bothered I'd have only had one child, and the reason for this is not about the schools we went to, or our career choice- plenty of people with the same career as DH send their DC's to private schools)

I went to both state and independent schools as a child; so have seen both side of the coin - so to speak

YANBU. I live in quite a rough area but DCs school is amazing and gets excellent Ofsted reports. More importantly DCs love school.

It's good that you are happy and unaware of what you are missing on the other side.

I think that many private school parents would love to be in your shoes.

I can't quite remember the words, but I think the sentiments are the same - I was reading Robert Burns' To a Mouse to a class today, and the last verse was particularly interesting.

I'm asking because I've come across so many posts on here recently where people seem to think they are not doing the best for their children if they aren't sending them to a private school, and they would rather live off nothing but post noodles than throw their children into state education.

Interesting that you think it's a sort of reverse snobbery, LL. It definately is with DH, hearing the comments he comes out with about the mums outside the private school around the corner.

There is a disproportionate number of privateers on here, I think.

Always remember that in the real world 93% of people use the state system. This means that, in real life, you'd have to meet on average 13-14 couples before you met one using the private system. I imagine that, for most of us, this would be one or two people at most.

why dont you send your kids to state schools? is it that particular school or just state school in general

Is OP "unaware of what she is missing on the other side"? The way I read it, she has decided that she's not actually missing very much or, at least, what she's missing is offset by what she and her children are gaining from the state sector.

YANBU, but I think this is an area in which all notions of 'reasonable' or 'unreasonable' should be suspended , as all such judgements are too subjective!

I think that if your child is happy in school then your child will learn. If your child is unhappy in school your child will learn very little. DD is at the local state school. She is happy. 'Nuff said.

two of my children are in private schools. One is in a state school. The reasons are many and varied.
I chose the best school I could choose for each child.
And I am very happy with my choices too

And BTW
I do not think people who send their children to state are not doing the best for their children. I have never met anyone in real life who has ever said such a thing ( but then I guess I wouldn't like anyone who held such a view).

If one person from say Exceter said something deeply racist on here it would not be reasonable to associate everyone from Exceter with those comments.
Similarly , just because there are people who educate privately and then post unadulterated pompous shit on here that does not mean that that is what everyone who educates in the private sector believes.

Not at all, that was exactly the point of this post, pagwatch.

Indeed, we all do what is best for each child at the time.

We have our three eldest in private and two youngest in state. We would love them all to be in private but have to be realistic. Given the finances available, we are content with our younger two's education. We will move them to private as the older children move out.

I would not move DS to a private school if the entire Lottery jackpot landed in my bank tomorrow. He is very very happy at his Lambeth state primary, he is doing very well, and I am happy with the education he is receiving.

I niggle - even rant - about aspects of it, but having ben to a private primary myself I also know that I would have plenty to niggle and rant about there, too.

God no - NBU. I would NEVER send my children to a private schools even if I could afford it.The uniforms are shit.......

I think if you have a good state secondary school you are lucky, lots don't.
And many children don't manage to pass the exams to the best state, particularly in the South, but I imagine all over.
We have two at private and one at state, for many reasons.
Not all private schools are hell bent on pushing academic success, but are more interested in a well rounded and interesting education, rather than pumping them for exams. That's one of the reasons we chose the school ours go to.
The teaching is fantastic- not like storminateacup's experience atall- although we all know many private schools do have poor teaching and social climbing parents.
And blooming- the uniform is really bog standard scruffy, much more so than state secondaries- polo shirt, no tie, sweat shirt and no blazer- they think other things are more important.
(And the school gets very high results too.)
As pagwatch says- pointless to tar everyone with the same brush.

I think I know what you mean. In rl I have friends who mourn the fact that they can't afford private education inspite of the fact that their children are attending good state schools. It's almost a default setting - private is better than state. Well there are bound to be those that are, and those that aren't.

My parents wouldn't have considered state education for us - it simply never occurred to them to do so - snobbery maybe but more an assumption that private was the only way to go, regardless of the quality of either that was available.

private does not = best and state does not =best IMO. Depends on many things
