To think this reaction to an accident at preschool was ott?

I'm not sure how I would be, but my DC have enough at home for me to know it's a common thing for children.

As I was waiting to speak to DS's keyworker a mum arrived to collect her DS. The manager imediately came over to her with the accident book for her to look at and sign and a letter giving advice. She explained he'd tripped over a dressing up costume and bumped his head on the toy kitchen and that it had happened only 10 minutes earlier. He seemed fine and had a small red mark on his forehead.

The mother completely flipped, picked him up and marched out shouting that he'd never be back again, she'd be complaining to ofsted etcetc, the manager seemed quite upset and tried to follow her to talk to her.

When I passed her on the way home she was sitting on a bench yelling and swearing into her mobile.

I've chatted to this woman before and she seemed really nice, I thought this was quite an over reaction.

perhaps she had a REALLY bad day and this was the final straw?

I can understand for some mums it's a huge leap to leave their children in other peoples care (nopt for me, lol) but still, and even if it was heat of the moment she's probably scared him from going back even if she changes her mind once she coos down.

unless his key worker shoved him into the toy kitchen so he banged his head, it is totally OTT

Sounds like a massive over reaction to me too.

I was forever signging accident forms for DS2 last year when he was at nursery - he's bad enough at home - but with all those toys to play with.........

The worst was when he was playing on the tyre swing and somehow managed to swing far enough back to scratch his back on the tree trunk (I have no idea how he managed that - it's been there - the tyre swing - since DS1 went there for 4yrs ago and I've never heard of another child hurting themselves on it in that way )

So - let her complain - she will get nowhere, the accident book was completed, mother informed (all correct practice) , she will find herself without childcare and a bill for the fees throughout the notice period!

I don't know to be honest, I've met enough pfb type mothers who control their childrens every move to think maybe for some women, it would be normal to be outraged?

I have a friend that is quite OTT and it does drive me a bit mad.

actually come to think of it I'd have been worried/concerned if DS2 hadn't come home with regular bumps and bruises - as I'd have thought they made him sit in the corner all morning doing nothing

lol FAQ I absolutely agree. At this school they give out little pouches of stain remover if for child gets paint etc on their clothes. I fully expect him to come home covered in crap every day, that's why he's in his primark specials.

Well let's hope she gets told to sling her hook and find alternative childcare. An accident like that is no excuse to abuse the staff.

Very OTT, i am always signing the accident book for my ds at nursery, these things happen, she must have been having a very bad day.

It seemed to upset some of the other childrren too, and no wonder.
It's a bit sad when some are just settling in, it could un nerve them.

Whe you have more than one child or if you cast your mind back to your own childhood with siblings you can be a bit more understanding about these things happening.

She must be one very stressed lady!

You could almost feel sorry for the woman, she's obviously very stressed. If she expects her child never to fall and hurt himself then she's in for a bad time of it.

Poor nursery manager - in her position I'd expect an apology or I would be advising the parent to find alternative childcare.

The woman clearly has issues.

There is a parent of a child in my ds' class who is a bit like this. Her child once came home with a bump on his head and she went absolutely belistic as school hadn't notified her. Now, upon questioning, this child couldn't even remember how he'd bumped his head, so it was assumed that he'd just done it and not told anyone.

She went marching into school on the Monday, and demanded that any bump her child receives at school be written in the accident book, and that she be called immediately so that she can collect him. She actually went so far as to insist the accident procedures be changed and that it become a rule that all children should notify a teacher if they bump themselves at all but the school refused to do that as they said that the TA's would have nothing else to do but spend their time writing up accident reports as children bump themselves all the time.

But this parent has been to collect her child about 10 times for minor bumps, and every time she rushes him to the drs surgery and demands he be seen. They have also refused and have told her to take him to a&e if she's that worried.

YANBU, my DD fell off a climbing frame during a settling in session at day nursery, she had a big egg on her head. But I know what she is like and she is a bit of daredevil I would never have dreamed of reacting like that!
