To put this under the windscreen wiper of cars parked where they should not near school!

Infant school is at the top of a tiny road only four houses long. It comes of a road that is residential and very long becasue it is circular. The school has for years been sending out notes asking people dropping children off not to park in the tiny road. The school has an agreement with the pub at the top of the road that parents can park in their car park and walk down to school.

There is a problem - school has provided solution.

So why do some parents think that they have the right to put my child and every one else at risk becasue they couldn't be bothered to leave early enough to walk the five minutes rom the pub car park.

If cars are parked in this tiny road - fire engines and emergency services can not reach the school.

I have watched this go on for years - and today witnessed four cars in theis tiny road - two parked opposite each other and even the other two could not then get out! So no way would an emergency vehicle get through.

I think the message needs to driven home hard hitting - than polite but firm messages from school.

Would IBU to put the following print out, that I have made up on any offending cards?

I wish Head teavcher would send it to parents but I bet she wouldn't in case children saw it.
I?m sorry Mummy.

Sorry that they didn?t care enough about me to take note of the warnings.
Sorry that they didn?t care enough about their own children to listen.
Sorry that they didn?t think that there would ever be a real danger.

I?m sorry Mummy

That you can?t hear me talk to you anymore
That you can?t feel my arms wrapped around you anymore
That you can?t feel my wet kiss on your cheeks

Why Mummy?

Didn?t they listen?
Didn?t they read?
Didn?t they care?

They Tried Mummy.

The firemen tried to get us out Mummy
They heard us screaming Mummy
They heard us calling for you Mummy

But they couldn?t

They couldn?t reach us Mummy
They couldn?t help us Mummy
They wanted to so badly Mummy

Do you know why they couldn?t Mummy

Because there were people who parked where they shouldn?t have Mummy
The fire engine couldn?t get passed Mummy
The cars were in the way Mummy

We died Mummy.

Please stop it, my sides hurt!

jellybeans · 12/09/2008 15:55

These parents are selfish but maybe they are disabled etc or residents. Our school had simelar probs and a parking attendent patrols every week or so, which does the trick. However, when he is not there the parents go back to park there. You could suggest yellow lines around the school if there are none or a metal gate/zig zags down one side so that emergency veichles can get access at all times, presumably there are also food delivery trucks also needing to get through. I think, though, that if the parents were bothered they wouldn't park there so poems etc will not work.

ask the council to make it residents' parking only? Or, if all the residents have off-street parking, some double yellow lines?

Carmenere · 12/09/2008 16:05

I stand by my FGS get a life comment Spidermamma. I abhor sentimental tripe like that and cannot see how it would serve any purpose whatsoever to post it onto peoples cars.
Of course people parking at collection and dropping off times at schools is a problem. It is a problem that you have to be prepared to deal with if you move to a house near a school.

I feel your irritation having manoeuvred on to the grass to get past a car parked on the pavement outside school, only for the passenger to fling open the door and hit the pram, grr.

Write a note, saying 'Please do not park here. You are obstructing local residents & emergency vehicles'

Complain to the council & ask them to deploy a traffic warden.

If all fails, lie in wait with a stinger

suzywong · 12/09/2008 16:07

yes it has been a good night tonight on MN

I have to go to bed now, do let me know about more of the same threads, I'll be back in 9 hours

good night

bloomingfedup · 12/09/2008 16:07

I live in an area where the road is constantly chocca from cars parking on both sides of the road and up the side streets(shop near by). It has'nt even crossed my mind about the ES getting near. If there was a fire the fire brigade would park in the middle of the road if needed. Stop being a drama queen. Sorry to say it, BUT ARE YOU ARE TROLL?????Ducks.

2beornot2be · 12/09/2008 16:08

Good night Suzywong

Between this thread and the lunchbox thread on chat I have done no work as always mumsnet has kept me from working

2beornot2be · 12/09/2008 16:10

I don't believe that there is not any primary schools in England that the roads are not chocca block in an around the school area. {Can't wait for the school holidays peaceful walks to work)

jojostar · 12/09/2008 16:11

still giggling at that link best one I've seen haha

LittleBella · 12/09/2008 16:12

Believe it or not, putting stuff under people's wipers is illegal. (Tell that to parking wardens.)

Yes the poem's rubbish. But the problem is a real one, I don't see why people think it's impossible to make "littlies" walk. That's why they've got legs. You do NOT have the right to park inconsiderately or illegally because you have a younger child.

I do also abhor this attitude of "let the headteacher deal with it". Really? It's her problem is it? So along with all the million and one other things a HT has to do, she now has to deal with the savages who think that they're far too busy and important to obey the same road rules as the rest of us? And how exactly is she supposed to do that, without the active support of other parents?

To the OP, if you really want to solve this problem, approach the head and ask her if she's done a School Travel Plan to deal with this problem. If she hasn't, offer to do it for her. You will not get zigzags, yellow lines or patrols without the school being seen to actively engage with a long term plan to sort out congestion and encourage sustainable transport. HTH.
