...to resist the pressure to cut my 2-year old boy's hair so he 'looks like a boy'

William has beautiful flowing locks, and along with his tiny-featured face is often taken for a little girl. This doesn't bother me at all but friends, family and neighbours seem to have a problem. Whats all the about?

OP posts:

my friend's little brother has long corkscrew curls. if he has his hair cut short it looks a mess cos the curls are so tight. i don't think he could get away with such long hair if he didn't have curls though.

Ashantai · 13/09/2008 17:08

Ooh finally figured out how to put photos up! Do you think his hair is too long? I was trying to imagine him with really short hair but i just dont thing it would suit him.

And as for my girls, well i'm not even allowed to approach my eldest with the scissors although her sister doesnt mind the odd trim

Mumwhensteaready · 13/09/2008 17:10

My DS had long hair until he was 8 and looked gorgeous IMO until one day when he realised that the lady in the library thought he was a girl.He then demanded an emergency haircut because to 8 year old boys girls are yucky.
He's 12 now and the hair is long again. Apparently the girls like it.

lyrasilver · 13/09/2008 17:24

My 8 year old has short hair, his choice, and my 14 year old and 2 year old both have long hair. Ds1 looks cool! Ds3 looks cute and doesnt mind being called a girl, in fact he agrees and says..'yes lovely wee girl'

deste · 13/09/2008 18:21

Dont cut his hair its gorgeous. he looks like a child model.

lyrasilver · 13/09/2008 18:25

Is that to me, deste?

MariaR · 16/09/2008 19:50

Hello! I´ve put some pics of my son on "my site"!
Note! I´ve edited the pictures so no one could recognize him on the net! He doesn´t want to be a "public figure" for obvious reasons!
But you can all understand that I´m envy of him! Who wouldn´t love to have a hair like that!
Maria!

wotulookinat · 16/09/2008 20:03

Whilst it is gorgeous hair, I think it is gorgeous hair for a girl, I'm afraid.

chenin · 16/09/2008 20:47

eh? Why has your DS got a girls blouse on and pink trousers...?! And that hair is surely girls hair...

platypussy · 16/09/2008 20:50

I am confused too Is that hair real?.

i'm trying to grow out dd fringe just now as it's dementing me cutting it all time and she's 13 months. she came into this world with a small furry animal on her head.hoping to be long enough for pony tail shortly.

ds was bald as ever. is now 2.7month and we have to keep his very short or it just looks messy. typical boy. always getting things stuck in it when it gets kinda long.

my friends likke boy let grow till it was really long. he wouldn't let her brush it never mind cut it.it was very curly so started to get all matted.

i skirted round the subject of how i would dread it if my ds caught nits when he goes to nursery shortly that at least i'd be able to comb them out. and asked if she'd be shaving her son as his hair was so matted she could no longer ever get a brush through it when she did manage to pin her ds to the floor.

boys tend to need short hair if they're inclined to get it minging.

girls need it held back in pony tails if they're prone to doing disgusting stuff.

i long for my daughter to be dainty and say things are "dirrrrrty" like another friends dd. mines is too busy cutting up worms to care.

MariaR · 16/09/2008 21:31

That with the pink trousers were just for fun - he doesn´t wear that otherwise!
Of course, he doesn´t want to be bullied in school for wearing girls´clothes!
Yes, it´s his hair alright!
But, I guess, I shouldn´t have used those pics if I knew that it would upset you so much!
I guess, women are as prejudice as "macho" men! If it would have been a girl in short hair and boyish trousers, NO ONE would have bothered! Why are all people looking down on anything "feminine"?
Sad world, isn´t it!

ChacunaSonGout · 16/09/2008 21:37

keep it long - i love long hair on boys

3 of my 5 have long
1 does not suit it long
1 is 8 weeks old so i am working on it!

( sorry but nothing worse that a buzzed head)

platypussy · 16/09/2008 21:41

MariaR - your son???? On your profile it says you have no children. I am more confused than ever by your posts.

Sammyg81 · 16/09/2008 21:43

I think it's gorgeous!

Whatever you do, don't cut it. We gave in to pressure because everyone thought our little boy looked like a girl, because of his lovely long blonde curls, and we really regret it.

We are now in the process of trying to grow it back. Although he looks all grown up now, and more like a typical boy, he was much more cute with the curls!!!

Don't conform to type.

MariaR · 17/09/2008 11:30

Hi Sammyg81!
I can understand your confusion!
but with filling out my "statements" on my own place here on Mumsnet, there´s no place (what I can see, anyway!) to put if you´ve got children and how many in that case!
There´s just options coming down to choose from, no real place or box to put how many children you´ve got, their sex and their ages!
Can you help me out on that issue?
Sorry for the confusion!

marmadukescarlet · 17/09/2008 11:41

His hair looks lovely, but the pink trews and frilly blouse are a little more odd.

bobthebuddha · 17/09/2008 13:55

I'd say that if your kid was being continually mistaken for a girl by other boys then it would be a good idea to have it cut. I know a couple of boys with long blonde curly hair & this has happened on many occasions that I've witnessed. IMHO it would putting your child through unnecessary hassle & leaving them isolated from their peers.

Other parents' taste is frankly important - I speak as a mother of a DS who usually has a lovely little suede-head. He looks gorgeous & I don't give a stuff what you lot think .

Was often mistaken for a boy when I was little and I HATED it - but that was by stupid grownups mostly I think.

bobthebuddha · 17/09/2008 13:56

Gah! frankly unimportant rather

maddo · 17/09/2008 14:01

I scalp my boys have done since hair started to grow (but they don't have much any way) make the most of there hair now....once they start school and bring the lodgers home. The fun starts.

Sammyg81 · 17/09/2008 14:07

MariaR, I just went onto mymumsnet and went into my public profile and you can fill it all out in there.

Does this help??

TheMadHouse · 17/09/2008 14:11

My two have longish hair, but are both stunning and look like boys.

DS1 (3.5) asked not to have his curls cut off last time his fringe was cut - for preschool beginning of sept.

DS2 has never really had his cut yet.

There is plenty of time for them to sit and have it cut later. I hate shaved heads on little ones, makes them look thugish

MariaR · 17/09/2008 14:48

Thank you Sammyg81!
That was a great help!
Actually, they should say that you must create info of your children FIRST (on the other page) before going where I did (where you´ve got the "curtain"-option only! NOT easy to get that without proper instruction!
But, it´s settled now and thanks again!
Maria
