...to resist the pressure to cut my 2-year old boy's hair so he 'looks like a boy'

William has beautiful flowing locks, and along with his tiny-featured face is often taken for a little girl. This doesn't bother me at all but friends, family and neighbours seem to have a problem. Whats all the about?

I love little boys with long hair!
My ds hair seems to be rapid growing, i had to get it trimmed because it was a mass of curles and he kept on pulling it ( just from when he started teething - is that normal?)
Anyway, i think it's cute!

hedgewitch, your ds is sooo cute

Countingthegreyhairs · 08/09/2008 15:11

I haven't recovered from watching that TV series in the seventies (betraying my age here) of the Frances Hodgson Burnett story 'Little Lord Fauntleroy'. The child star had longish blond locks and was extremely irritating and pretentious (which I'm sure all your long-haired boys are NOT of course!!).

Sorry! I'm of the old school too. Also to be very-Mrs-Judgy-Pants about it, somehow because NOT cutting a boys hair goes against prevailing fashion, then a conscious decision has been made NOT to do it, which really then IS a decision about fashion, and somehow I feel that children and fashion (within reason) should be kept separate until around the age of puberty if at all possible.

Glad I have a girl Phew!

2be - doesn't it get in there eyes if you leave it until they are 5? have you got a little boy? if so would love to see a pic.

marmadukescarlet · 08/09/2008 15:17

My DS had really long hair, down to his shoulder blades and white blonde. All the old ladies in the supermarket used to say 'what a pretty girl'!

He had the fringe cut reg, but I cut the lot when he was 2.5 and about to start pre-school.

It is still not short - cannot bear 'skinheads', looks so agressive (as I'm sure those parents think long hair is ridiculous) - but I actually much prefer him with smarter hair, he looks really grown up.

Pic on profile is of him aged 3 with recently trimmed locks, this is as short as it gets!.

nappyaddict · 08/09/2008 15:17

their

Gateau · 08/09/2008 15:17

Agree counting, I don't think half as many people would let their Dses have long hair if it wasn't fashionable.
About five years ago, it was rarely seen, except on real bohemian types.

marmadukescarlet · 08/09/2008 15:18

Bottom pic is after trim, first pic is about as long as it gets nowadays.

nappyaddict · 08/09/2008 15:22

marmadukes - gorgeous!! is it sort of eyelid/eyelash length? so many people keep telling me now ds' fringe is passed his eyebrows i should get it cut but i don't want to just yet.

Countingthegreyhairs · 08/09/2008 15:24

Oh, having looked at the pictures they are all GORGEOUS either way. (Broody emoticon)
(So are you Hedgewitch) A future boy of mine would still be subjected to a regular short back and sides though ....

nappyaddict · 08/09/2008 15:26

i mean when i do get it cut i will probably get his fringe cut no shorter than what it is now (just passed his eyebrows) so it wouldn't make sense to take him yet would it!

mummy5bellies · 08/09/2008 15:27

CountingGrey, it isn't a conscious decision not to so much as being part of a very large & busy family where its a miracle if you can find a pair of scissors

you need to make your profile visible aswell.

Wezzle · 08/09/2008 15:46

Lolo...why is it bad luck to cut their hair before they are 5?

DS could be the unluckiest boy around in that case.

He's had 2 haircuts (with clippers ) and he's only just turned 1, as personally I really don't like little boys with long hair, but each to their own.

TBH, after 2 DDs, both with loads of hair from day 1, I'm enjoying not having to wrestle with DS just to get the brush through his hair.

marmadukescarlet · 08/09/2008 19:16

Nappyaddict yes I let it get to eyelash length, then trim it back to eyebrows.

I do most of his haircuts myself, but had it 'done' 3 weeks ago (£10 gulp) and it really needs doing again - he'll have to get used to a wonky fringe again as I'm not shelling out every 3 weeks!
