...to resist the pressure to cut my 2-year old boy's hair so he 'looks like a boy'

William has beautiful flowing locks, and along with his tiny-featured face is often taken for a little girl. This doesn't bother me at all but friends, family and neighbours seem to have a problem. Whats all the about?

"It's bad luck to cut there hair b4 they are 5."
What a ludicrous statement.
My DS is only 16 months and has already had his hair cut twice - he is in fact due his next one any time now.
I don't want him to be weighed down by lots of hair, partic in warmer weather and his hair gets in his eyes. Plus you can see his gorgeous little face when his hair is shorter. I prefer hair to look tidy anyway.
I think long hair on boys looks really scruffy, just as if the mother can't be bothered getting it cut. Just yesterday in the playground, my DH said to my DS, "Watch for for that little girl" when it was in fact a little boy.
The mothers may not mind them being called girls, but what about the kids?
It's a fashion thing really, nothing else.

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 08/09/2008 14:24

My DS is 10 and has long(ish) curly hair - his friends and kids in his class think he is "cool" but I get lots of comments from their mums as to when am I going to get it cut.

it is also a Jewish tradition KVC - boys get their first hair cut at 3

fortyplus · 08/09/2008 14:26

I did this! Resist the pressure! Ds1 was only about 21 months when I took him for his first haircut and the blond curls fell to the floor - I've regretted it ever since. Little boys with long curly hair look great! Not so good when they're 14 and the hair has gone straight... take a look at my pics

2beornot2be · 08/09/2008 14:26

expatinscotland sorry In Jamaica its bad luck to cut there hair before they are 5 I should of put that.

Anyways I see more little boys with long hair these days anyways they look cute

nooname · 08/09/2008 14:27

Wow - I'm genuinely surprised that there are some people (who presumably aren't of my grandparents generation!!) on here who are of the old-fashioned view that boy = short hair, girl = long-hair.

BitOfFun - My ds' hair is very unusual and as such gets a million comments a day from complete strangers about how gorgeous it/he is. I am flabberghasted by the notion that I should get it cut because he is not a girl or a dog

I think it's eminently reasonable of me to leave it as it is unless HE wants it different. Not sure why that warrants a .

Gateau · 08/09/2008 14:27

having said that, I have to admitmy Ds's har would look gorgeous long. It's really thick and blonde with luscious curls. maybe I'll have a rethink. But I doubt it.

mummy5bellies · 08/09/2008 14:27

Long hair can look scruffy, gateau, but so can short hair.

I am jealous ! Although that said even if my dcs had hair (my ds is 3 and it is only recently thickening up) I think I prefer boys with short hair. It's all a bit Boden-esque this long hair on boys malarky

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 08/09/2008 14:29

When I was at school the boys with the really short hair were usually those who'd recently had nits!

Anna8888 · 08/09/2008 14:30

I love long hair on little boys - just as long as he is wearing suitably macho clothing it's fine.

As a mother 0f 5, Boden is a bit beyond me, but here in Cornwall it does seem to be more acceptable for boys to have long hair. its family up country that make comments

Gateau · 08/09/2008 14:31

mummy5bellies. I am this point having a total rethink. My little DS's hair is just so gorgeous - maybe it's wasted short. Mmmm....

worley · 08/09/2008 14:31

same here with ds2.
he had lovely hair with little curls at the back, he got mistaken soooo many times for a girl, even if he was dressed in blue with jeans etc. but he still got called "the girl"
my parents hated his hair and would comment every time about it,
we have now just had it cut at 27 mths, but only because he was getting things stuck init at nursery and when he was asleep next to me in bed i layed my arm on his hair (with out realising) and then when he woke up he couldnt get up as i was pinning him down by his hair!!!
he's lost all his baby looks now

RubySlippers · 08/09/2008 14:32

C'mon Gateau - join the club

PoorOldEnid · 08/09/2008 14:33

I think it is pretentious for some strange judgemental reason, I cannot justify feeling this way, I just do.

agree with bossykate also.

Gateau, imagine him with his lovely long hair and suitable macho combats. He'll have enough haircuts when he's older. And besides, imagine the pictures you can stash away for his 18th

OP posts:
PoorOldEnid · 08/09/2008 14:34

I like it on older boys though

am conflicted and shouldn't really be listened to at all tbh

priceyp · 08/09/2008 14:34

Mummy5, Cornwall ! Just make sure all the pics you take of them are on the beach with their lovely long hair, your albums will look like Boden catalogues!!

BitOfFun · 08/09/2008 14:35

Hey nooname, each to their own! I'm sure your ds' hair is gorgeous. Truth be told, the face just makes me feel every time I see it! No offence meant.

stillstanding · 08/09/2008 14:35

Of course it also depends on the hair. If it is lovely and thick and suits being longish, fabulous, but if it is very thin and scraggy then I would rethink. This is Something In Life That I Have Had To Accept myself. Bugger.

Also feel strongly that DS has the rest of his life to conform, conform, conform and that he may as well be a little rock and roll while under 5.

mummy5bellies · 08/09/2008 14:36

hmmmmmm...... he could earn his keep.... "hello, is that the mini surf dude modelling agency...?"
