To think that human excrement should not be sent to landfill

Every disposible nappy that your child has ever used is probably in existance somewhere in landfill. What is more scary is that all these nappies will still exist after you and your grandchildren are dead.

I think that disposable nappies should be seperated from normal rubbish and recyled. I am sure that it would be possible to design a disposible nappy that was more enviromnentally friendly. Maybe a two part system with a water proof wrap and the disposible part could be made completely compostible.

The present situation stinks. I think that it would take legistation to force parents and companies to work a bit harder for the sake of our world.

"I do recycle, walk most places, take tablets back to chemist, flush the shite down the loo.... I also breastfeed so save much of the engery and chemicals used on sterisling equipemnt."

I think you will find that most people do. What I am talking about is changing disposibles not necesserily getting rid of them. There are times which the convience of disposible nappies is great. Ie. working mums, going on holiday.

Buried in landfill even the most eco friendly disposibles do not decompose. Surely there has to be a better way of dealing with incontinence waste/ tampons etc. I am not sure that inceneration of the whole nappy is a better solution.

If the waste was seperated and pampers nappies had to be sent back to pampers or huggies it would be quite interesting to see how quickly the design would change. Computer manufactorers have been forced to take responsiblity for their waste. Why not extend this to othe manufactorers.

We have new neighbours and they have lovely six month old twin babies. Unfortunately our area has a two weekely collection. I am not looking forward to the pong next summer.

Here is a way of having a disposible nappy without messing up the enviromnent for centuries.

Weenees Nappy System

You chuck the the pad and the outer wrap stops leaks. The pad is completely compostible. Its just a petty that nappies like this aren't available in mainstream shops.

IIRC, incinerating them causes air pollution instead.

SqueakyPop · 07/09/2008 09:59

Not if you manage your waste gases properly.

WendyWeber · 07/09/2008 12:23

Oooh, I always have terrible trouble managing my waste gases!

ChukkyPig · 07/09/2008 12:32

I know wendy, for me it started when I got pregnant and waste gases have been a but of an issue ever since!

ChukkyPig · 07/09/2008 12:32

Hiya, even though there are worse things in landfill sites than nappies doesn't make it okay to have nappies in there too, especially if there's an alternative. Personlly can't bear the thought of my baby's shit lying around for years. I know disposables are more "convenient" but really find I enjoy changing the real nappies - saving money and not lining the pockets of great big fmcg firms at the same time. In fact, real nappies are better all round.
