To think that human excrement should not be sent to landfill

Every disposible nappy that your child has ever used is probably in existance somewhere in landfill. What is more scary is that all these nappies will still exist after you and your grandchildren are dead.

I think that disposable nappies should be seperated from normal rubbish and recyled. I am sure that it would be possible to design a disposible nappy that was more enviromnentally friendly. Maybe a two part system with a water proof wrap and the disposible part could be made completely compostible.

The present situation stinks. I think that it would take legistation to force parents and companies to work a bit harder for the sake of our world.

BumGenius would be dry overnight. I speak from experience not supposition.

ilovemydog · 06/09/2008 22:12

try these?

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 22:13

can't imagine using anything but value ones so that is good to know.

but damn, i hate throwing those things away.

gross.

pity about not being able to use the mooncup.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2008 22:13

Can you add a fleece nappy liner on top to keep the gel from touching your skin?

bloomingfedup · 06/09/2008 22:14

"I stuff them out in the morning and they are dry at night"

LackaDAISYcal · 06/09/2008 22:15

pocket nappies or microfibre dry very quickly. With pockets, make sure you have enough additional inserts that you have a few days worth as theyn take a bit longer to dry.

bloomingfedup, you sound like you are coming round to the idea

and they look so pretty....especially under dresses in the summertime.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2008 22:15

'Daisy, yes, it does. I couldn't work out why on earth she should get horrendous nappy rash from cloth and not disposable. Adding a liner didn't help either (although someone suggested a silk liner but I couldn't get my head round using silk for my baby to poo and wee on!).

I will think about it. I have minded kids in reusables and pretty does not spring to mind, bulky.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2008 22:18

I remember when I had just one Bum Genius nappy. I washed it and it was ready to be worn again in under 3 hours. This was when the central heating was on.

bloomingfedup · 06/09/2008 22:18

KVC

I was thinking you left them out in the full on rain.

SoupDragon · 06/09/2008 22:18

BumGenius are very slim fitting and are exactly the same as putting on a disposable.

misdee · 06/09/2008 22:19

thanks, too, ilove.

going to have a look at that site as well.

ilovemydog · 06/09/2008 22:27

expat, they are made in the US

expatinscotland · 06/09/2008 22:30

i thought i'd seen them there!

but i was on the Pill there, and used to run packets together so only had a 'period' about 4x/year, and it was very light, so used a 'divacup' even back then.

LackaDAISYcal · 06/09/2008 22:38

SD...I have a couple of silk liners; they look like old knitted socks, and didn't make any difference to DDs bum.

I wonder if my DDs problem is the elastic/bindings as her rash seems worst on her thighs, outwith the actual nappy area.

I have similar issues in that I can't wear knickers with elasticated legs; got to wear shorts.

I'm going to check out those pads and tampons as well as I also get "nappy rash" if using pads for any length of time.

ReallyTired · 06/09/2008 22:54

I found that the best way to stop nappy rash was to half the amount of washing powder and use aqua softner to soften the water.

It might also be worth putting your clean nappies through the washing machine with no washing powder, but some water softner to get rid of any excess washing powder.

Have you tried a different design of nappy wrap? I have to admit that I have never used a wool wrap. The thought just grossed me out.

But you would get round the elastic problem.

done all that apart from the wooly wraps RT

We are waiting for a dermatology referral at the minute.

ButtonMeUp · 06/09/2008 23:04

Well i am a lazy irresponsible parent then because i do use disposables. So shoot me.

I do recycle, walk most places, take tablets back to chemist, flush the shite down the loo.... I also breastfeed so save much of the engery and chemicals used on sterisling equipemnt.

I think your tone is unreasonable however noble your intentions, you come across as completely arrogant.

LackaDAISYcal · 06/09/2008 23:09

have you read the whole thread buttonmeup? It's kind of moved on from the OP now

misdee · 06/09/2008 23:10

dd3 had leg 'burns' from the e;astic bindings in wraps. i used wool and fleece cuffed wraps for her till her legs healed. then once they had healed i change wraps most nappy changes.

LackaDAISYcal · 06/09/2008 23:14

that's one of the reasons I changed to pockets, as it's the fleece in contact not wrap bindings, but it made little difference.

The price of wool wraps put me off, and my one outing with a tots fleece wrap was a total disaster.

Fingers crossed virgil will be a little more robust!

SoupDragon · 07/09/2008 08:30

Yes, ReallyTired, I tried no/little powder, a cotton wrap, liners... the only thing that stopped it was disposables and cloth nappies were the only thing that caused any kind of skin problem. Bizarre. Thankfully she's potty trained now so my disposable "load" is hugely diminished. I made up for it by recycling anything and everything I possibly could (which is habit now so I'll carry on!).
