When I see smokers with babies, I really want to yell at them...

Given the fact that smoking can increase the chance of cot death, breathing problems, glue ear and a whole host of other nasties (not to mention cancer) why is it that every time I go into town or for a walk in my local area I see 'parents' who think it is OK to smoke all over their children? It makes me want to yell very loudly!!!

OP posts:

1 in 4 of all deaths from cancer is caused by smoking. Or is that 1 in 4 of all deaths from cancer are smoking patients. Around 25% of the adult populations smoke. So that makes sense.

A lot of cancer deaths are in elderly patients.

Stats can be twisted.

OK I'm getting a bit fed up with this now. I will add that you have all made me think and I'm seriously going to try another quit soon.

Firepile · 07/09/2008 23:41

Abouteve,

A nice try, but that is not how the figure is worked out.

They are based on how many EXCESS deaths occur due to smoking. So it assumes that the baseline cancer rate will be the same as in the non-smoking population, and these deaths are not included in the 1 in 4 figure.

And yes, a lot of cancer deaths are in elderly paties, but the average smoker loses 10 years of their life expectancy compared with non-smokers. As well as cancer, they suffer diability and death from heart disease, strokes and lung disease.

Good luck with the quit attempt!

Twelvelegs · 08/09/2008 07:58

It's all fabrication that smoking causes cancer?

mamadiva · 08/09/2008 08:15

Well since I ams uch a bad poarent I have decided to stop smoking again so as not to put my son through this abuse anymore! May I burn in hell!

Also yes fags are proven to increase risks of cancer but you gotta die of something!

And do you also not touch bacon, red wine, pre packed salad and probably another 40 things which 'increase the risk of cancer' no one knows the true extent of the risks that you face surely? How would they know when so many people die of cancer who have never smoked.

hf128219 · 08/09/2008 08:16

finetheriver: the profession of my relatives has nothing to do with it.

The same way the OP should keep her frigging nose out of other people's business.

Firepile · 08/09/2008 09:21

Yes Mamadiva, you're right - we do all have to die of somethng. But a quarter of all long-term smokers die of a smoking related disease in their middle age (ie before they reach 65).

And that is independent of whether they eat bacon, drink wine or "eat pre-packed salad" (not asociated with any increased risk of cancer btw).

I could bore you with how the evidence of smoking and cancer (and the magnitude of the risks) has been emerging over the last 50 years, if you like... The original study expected to finsd that something like road tarmacing was responsible for the massive increase in lung cancer mortality in the twentieth century. They were amazed when the evidence pointed so strongly to tobacco.

The process of establishing that exposure to something causes a disease is very complicated. In the case of tobacco and cancer, all the boxes have been ticked, several times over.

Firepile · 08/09/2008 09:22

"finetheriver: the profession of my relatives has nothing to do with it."

So why did you bring it up then?

hf128219 · 08/09/2008 09:43

Well they are in their late 70's now. so perhaps it has got something to do with it.

mamadiva · 08/09/2008 09:49

Oops my bad the pre packed salad was filled with food poisoning hardly the same thing is it LOL

Oh well I withdraw that bit but seriously we all know the risks of smoking but back to the mater at hand smoking does not make you a bad parent!!! Regardless of how young or old you are!

2beornot2be · 08/09/2008 09:58

Who cares??? My Mother smoked around us as kids even when she was pregnant I am not dead yet if people are smoking outside I don't see what the problem is?
OP if you yelled at me for smoking I would yell straight back atcha.

As for the person that said child abuse if u smoke around your children are you serious??? I think you should meet a child that has been abused before you even put these children in the same catergory

Tittybangbang · 08/09/2008 10:10

"As for the person that said child abuse if u smoke around your children are you serious??? I think you should meet a child that has been abused before you even put these children in the same catergory"

There are different ways of abusing children.

Exposing them to substances that you know may make them sick and can even kill them is one way. Smoking in the home is a serious health risk for a lot of children in the UK. According to Cancer Research:
"A study by the Royal College of Physicians showed that about 17,000 children in the UK are admitted to hospital every year because of illnesses caused by second-hand smoke."

17000 children hospitalised. Because of their parents' smoking.

It's bloody appalling.

bloomingfedup · 08/09/2008 10:23

Of course it's fucking child abuse!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up and smell the coffee - would you feed your child something that couls give them cancer. ffs - selfish, self indulgent people. You should know better in this day and age.

2beornot2be · 08/09/2008 10:29

It still does not come under child abuse thats like saying if you give a kid a macdonalds its child abuse because it contains to much fat which in turn could make your child obese and they could die from heart problems.

I would rather see people smoking outside than in there houses with kids running around at least there is fresh air when they are outside.

OP was complaining of parents in the street smoking around kids not in the home.

bloomingfedup · 08/09/2008 10:33

Yawn at yet more excuses. And while my children do eat junk in moderation - feeding your child shit food all the time is another form of abuse. Less chat more action.

2beornot2be · 08/09/2008 10:33

bloomingfedup It's not child abuse when you have seen a 1yr old with 40 stiches across they face and a black and blue body that is child abuse

seeing someone on the street outside smoking a fag does not class as child abuse.

Some of you need to get off your high horse and realise that your not the most perfect parents

bloomingfedup · 08/09/2008 10:35

Get help!!!!!!!

Tittybangbang · 08/09/2008 10:35

An occasional burger will not harm a child eating a predominantly healthy diet. Burgers are not poison.

But every time a child breaths in tobacco fumes it harms them.

Just like giving them tiny doses of poison. Day after day after day.

jumpingbeans · 08/09/2008 10:36

Well said, 2beornot2b too many perfect parents on here, some really setting them selves up for a fall

mm22bys · 08/09/2008 10:37

You wouldn't let your child have a even a sip of your wine or beer, would you?

So why would you want to share your cigarette smoke, which for them is unfiltered?

bloomingfedup · 08/09/2008 10:38

I am not a perfect parent. You have an addiction and are making any excuse to justify your disguisting behaviour. As I said before >>

skydancer1 · 08/09/2008 10:40

It would help this thread if people defined their terms a bit, because it's often unclear clear whether people talking about smoking 'around' children would include in that such things as smoking outside in the fresh air (as the OP was talking about) or inside the house, car or other confined space. And because people are saying emotive things like 'smokers are fucking disgusting moronic child abusers"'etc, I for one would find it helpful to know if these are merely crackpots upset about Mrs Poppins smoking outside in the garden or park or if they are more understandably disgusted by us Mothers of all bad mothers who like to blow smoke rings into the cot and knowingly attach horrid chemicals to the baby blankets...

ErinH · 08/09/2008 10:41

smoking around children is very dangerous but I'm afraid I think you are being unreasonable.
much much more important things going on to get worked up about this.
unfortunately it's up to them and you have to make sure you do your job properly and are proud of yourself, but not judge others.

Remotew · 08/09/2008 10:42

Reading this thread, certain posters going on about child abuse etc are f----ing crackpots.

2beornot2be · 08/09/2008 10:45

IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE SMOKING HOW MUCH HARM CAN IT DO???

I UNDERSTAND IF YOUR IN A ENCLOSED ROOM NOT A GOOD IDEA TO SMOKE AROUND KIDS BUT OUTSIDE SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM.

Everything comes down to child abuse you shout at your kids and its child abuse you tap there hands its child abuse you smoke a fag outside its child abuse get a grip there is real children getting abused day in and day out.

It does not make you a shit parent if you smoke outside so maybe people should stop judging others and start looking at there own family and faults

bloomingfedup · 08/09/2008 10:45

I think your a crackpot if you smoke around a child, inside or outside. You must be cracked to do something which may well harm your child.
