to let my toddler play outside in the rain

I am pretty sure I am NBU...she is 2 years old and dressed in wellies, heavy jeans and a mack.

DD begged to play outside despite the heavy rain, so I let her out. I'm snugged up on the sofa nursing DS, Mumsnetting and watching her play in the garden.

I did try and get her inside 5 minutes ago when the weather got worse but she shouted 'No' and ran off with her ball to the bottom of the garden. She is crazy to want to be outside today.

Just reassure me that my neighbours are not going to ring the social

YANBU unless this is a stealth AIBU and you are going to reveal later that the whole street is flooded and she can barely stay afloat.

LOL, No flooding here, she is not in any danger from drowning

Though she is now dancing across the patio with her hood down and her hair in rat tails...she is having fun

YANBU. I had my 3 yr old in wellies and a raincoat, playing in a complete mud bath in the garden earlier. It kept him amused for about 2 hours. Who am I to argue with that?

I wouldn't worry too much, it's hardly mid-winter at the moment (though to look outside you'd wonder).

She'll only stay out until she gets uncomfortable and then she can be changed into warm, dry clothes and given a warm drink. I bet she's had a brilliant time.

When we were small, our backyard flooded in a thunderstorm and mum let up put our swimming togs on so that we could go for a paddle. From the photos I was only about 6 or 7 but I can still remember it almost 30 years on and had a great time.

aww I have let mine do that loads..they have also danced naked in the rain hell if you cant do it as a toddler when can you??

YANBU, if I could see my garden from my sofa rather than having to go out there I would've sent DS (23months) out there hours ago, he would love it.

I saw a couple of under 5's with their mum walking down the road just now. It has actually stopped raining now and the pavements are dry, but they had little footprints behind them and they were absolutely soaked through and filthy! All three of them were laughing about the biggest puddle they'd just jumped in! It was lovely to see. So no, YANBU!

Fantastic! Theres no such thing as bad weather if you have the right combination of
clothing and attitude.

Earlier this summer we were at the Martin Mere 'duck place'. DD (9) was in the (excellent) playground when the heavens opened. All the other kids scarpered for cover except DD and a tough small girl. They had a great time, DD had the zipwire to herself, she got totally soaked ... we were
sat on a bench in Goretex with her Berghaus
raincoat over our knees, she refused to put it on because it was so much fun. She didn't even complain on the damp journey home (being 9 we don't automatically carry spare clothes any more unless we know its somewhere that she's likely to fall in a stream)

i was out today and the only people out were parents with buggies and children.

they could survive a nuclear winter due to being out in all adverse conditions. if there was mutation a super-species all weather would result

We just got our two new wellies and the younger one a waterproof trouser and jacket suit like his brother.
We can't keep them inside!

My little sister used to have matching flowery umbrella, mac, sou-wester and wellies and if it rained would dance about in the path. The neighbours called her the water baby

Little lapin I am just off to tell them to have a go on the slide they will probably shoot off over the yard wall!

She is back inside after 2 hours in the rain, dried and redressed in her cosy dressing gown.

Though on the point of "unsuitable clothing", she needs waterproof pants, as her jeans aren't very rain friendly.

Or maybe those plastic all in one suits my baby brother use to wear as a toddler in the 1980's...wonder if they still make them.

Not unreasonable at all. I have heard of a nursery in England where the kids are outside ALL the time and in ALL weathers. Apparently it is very popular and it is not as if they can't be dressed appropriately for the weather. My DS loves rain and puddles! Just as well in this country...

I seem to be the only parent in my street who will let DD play out in the rain. If she's fed up she can come in but the other parents bring their kids in at the first sign of rain.
I find it weird. It's not like they'll melt.

Took our 3 years old DD for a fun walk in the rain, we went through the fields and took some carrots to feed some friendly horses... we were very well wrapped in wellies and rain coats but got soaked! The best part of it was to be back home, jumped in a warm bath and put our PJ's at 4pm.. DD just couldn't stop talking about it to her daddy just now..let's enjoy the rain since we don't have any sunshine

YANBU at all, my DS (19 months) was also out in the garden rain today, in fact he seems more keen to go out when it is raining!
My DD has a really long raincoat from muddy puddles, just had a look and they sell the all in ones! www.muddypuddles.com/waterproofs/rainflex/rainflex-warm-in-one
