To think that a size 16 is not fat

roseability · 19/08/2008 21:48

I mean I would say this, as I am surprisingly enough a size 16.

When I was younger I dieted, starved and fought myself into a size 10-12. I just can't be bothered anymore. My DH seems to like my curves and I feel it is only society that deems I should be thinner.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a size 10-12 BTW but I think some women are naturally smaller sizes than others

I want to stand up to all this size 0 shit! Why can't we just be the size we are without feeling inadequate.

What do you all think?
How do you feel about your size?
What is your opinion of other's size?

Am I harking on about nothing or should Mnetters stand up and embrace their curves/lumps/bumps

personally I think women of size 16 are just about right and a woman of size whatever how big with a personality and character will always be better than a size small, slim, catwalk perfect dimbo

Treeny · 19/08/2008 23:39

But you can be a healthy and comfortable weight and still have personality and character. "Thin women are boring" is one of the myths put about by fat women - I used to do it myself. There's nothing life-enhancing about chafing thighs!

twinsetandpearls · 19/08/2008 23:44

My chafing thighs were the last straw for me.

ReallyTired · 19/08/2008 23:47

"A size 16 (a modern size 16, because sizes have expanded) is undoubtedly fat. Sorry about that."

Quattrocento,

Do you really think I am over weight?

I wear size 16 tops because God was generous to me in the breast department. However I wear size 10 skirts and trousers as I have a small waist and hips.

I weigh 10st and I am 5ft 6". I have quite a lot of muscle because I do a very physical job. I haven't the foggest what my BMI is but I am sure its respectable.

twinsetandpearls · 19/08/2008 23:50

I don't use dress size solely as a guide as I can be anything from a 14 to a 20. But on average I am a 16 but more importantly when I look at myself in the mirror naked I am fat.

Loshad · 19/08/2008 23:51

I am a size 16, and yes i'm fat - i have a big fat tummy, and i'm tall so should in theory be able to take some weight. I have a very laid back attitude to curves, and am very anti the whole diet industry lark but in the cold light of day, i'm still fat.

misi · 19/08/2008 23:56

treeny, I am not meaning to perpetuate any myths, what I was trying to say is that size doesn't matter, character and personality does.

whatever your size, whether large or small or anything in between, if you have an empty head but if you have a wonderful head on your shoulders packed full of interests and an infectious personality, who cares about the packaging?

I am a 16
I am definately overweight
I would like to be smaller
a size 12 would be great.

I don't think there are hoards of women wanting to be a zero I think most women would be happy with a 10-12

I am clever, witty, kind and funny but also fat. I would like to be all of those things and pleasant to look at.

misi · 20/08/2008 00:13

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, who says you are unpleasant to look at? no one who loves you for sure! and self evaluation is known to be wildly wonky at the best of times

I'm fat and a size 16, DD is 11 months old and I'm still 2 stones heavier than when I got preggie, (because I've been lazy!). It feels awful, unhealthy and bulky - so different to how I felt before.

My DD weighs 1 1/2 stones, when I pick her up she feels really quite heavy, I've got that and a third again added to my normal weight, it's a lot of added bulk.

I personally feel everyone knows their own body and it's down to how you feel.

solidgoldbrass · 20/08/2008 00:49

Oh go and read THIS the lot of you!

twinsetandpearls · 20/08/2008 00:59

I think I am unpleasant to look at, I have also been told that I am. My dp thinks I am gorgeous but he is biased and clearly has a thing for larger ladies other than Kylie Minogue!

twinsetandpearls · 20/08/2008 01:02

solidgoldbrass I do not want to see people discrimanted against but I know and I look and feel better when I am slimmer. It is of course just an opinion that I look better but it is a fact I feel better. I get tired to quickly lately, my thighs rub together when I walk, I cannot wear the clothes I want to and look how I want to.

ReallyTired · 20/08/2008 02:51

I think that people should concentrate on eating healthily and doing plenty of exercise rather than worrying about their particular size and weight.

I think the ablity to climb a steep hill at a reasonable pace says more about someone than their dress size, weight or BMI. Rather than asking whether you are over weight its better ask...

Can you keep up with your child in the park?
Can you climb the stairs without puffing?

I think with weight loss people get into a spiral of crash diets rather than fundermentally changing their life. They expect too much of their bodies too soon. It takes years to get fat and I think its reasonable to expect it to take years to get thin.

bodiam08 · 20/08/2008 07:19

Size 16 is fat. The reality is that so many of us have become overweight or obese that is has become "normal". "Normal" doesn't equal healthiness.

I think a lot of you are in denial.

RedFraggle · 20/08/2008 07:35

I'm a 12-14 now but when I was in a 16 after DS birth I felt very fat. It would be lovely to be able to say size doesn't matter but from even a purely health point of view it does. If you are a size 16 your BMI is more likely to say you are unhealthy and therefore yes, you would be fat.
From a personal point of view I believe that I was fat when a 16. I still feel I am a bit fat now and want to lose another stone to reach my ideal, healthy, non-fat weight!

branflake81 · 20/08/2008 07:44

Clothing sizes have definitely changed. I was anorexic when I was a teenager and very underweight. I used to wear size 8, which, although still a bit too baggy on me, was ok.

Now, ten years later and a few stone heavier I am "still" a size 8-10.

How does that work?

elmoandella · 20/08/2008 07:49

i'm not a size 16 just now. fighting my way back there.

but when i was a size 16 i was at a great BMI, when i fell pregnant and they worked it out i was at optimum weight for height. but still size 1.

so sometimes a size 16 is not fat.

elmoandella · 20/08/2008 07:56

mind you i'm tall, have huge shoulers, hips and ribs.

i may actually be a case of big boned. when i lie flat my ribs are bigger than my boobs when i was a size 16.

belgo · 20/08/2008 07:59

If you are tall and muscular then size 16 isn't fat. But I'm average height and build and anything above a size 12 is fat for me, particularly as sizes have become so much bigger over the years. For most women size 16 is fat, and if we deny that, then we are not doing ourselves and our health any favours.

But of course you can still be attractive at a size 16 - as that England beauty contestant proved.

belgo · 20/08/2008 08:01

branflake - my size has mostly stayed a 12 over the past 15 years, despite my weight varying by about one and a half- two stone.

LoveMyGirls · 20/08/2008 08:01

Bfore I had dd2 I was 12-14 after having her I was size 18-20, I lost a bit and was a size 16 for about a year and tbh though it was ok I wasn't happy with myself deep down when I put half a stone on over christmas and my size 16's got too tight I joined WW and I'm now 9.6 wearing size 10-12 and I'm so much happier and finally the guilt I felt after ever bicuit or cake has gone! I'm really short and my healthy bmi is between 22 and 26 I'm 23 at the moment so pretty happy with that, it says to be at my healthiest I should wigh 8 st 12 but I'm not sure I'll get to that, maybe for my wedding next year but if I don't manage it I won't be upset because I'm happy as I am for now - never thought I'd say that!
