in thinking that street dance is an inappropriate hobby for a 5 year old?

just me thinking that the body popping and thrusting is not something i would like my children to be doing then?

Didn't see it so can't share your moral outrage, but yes, would rather a little one was doing some physical activity than sat indoors on the keyboard. Which of course is where we all are right now

What's bad about street dancing? I was trying to persuade DS1 and DS2 to do a street dancing class yesterday. I would have thought it was one of the few ways of encouraging most boys into dancing. It looks incredibly athletic.

I don't think it is inappropriate ds (4) really wants to start lessons. I saw a performance recently, the boys were fantastic to watch and anything that encourages children to be active is a good thing.

I think street dancing is excellent. It really makes them use their bodies and it's highly energetic.

Also it's a great way to keep boys interested in dance

So yes YABU

i just think it involves far too much attitude and pelvic gyrating than is necessary for little kids. teenagers - fine. older children - fine. yes, i do think it is cool and funky to watch, just not when little kids are doing it.

(i namechange periodically, it's not significant!)

i have seen a lot of street dance at my DDs ballet school but not too much 'thrusting'.

Agree MrsD. I just saw it on cbeebies and it made me a little uncomfortable.

dd (5) goes to street dance, I have never witnessed any thrusting, just lots of jumping around and arm waving. Mind you, she's moving up to the older class after the holidays, so I will be on thrust watch!

Well in the Far East the little children pop pythons down their trews for entertainment.

A bit of batty riding is fine in my book for a 5 year old just watch him in case he turns moody and leaves crack rocks in your cutlery drawer.

I didn't see CBeebies but I did see "Into The Hoods" in London and there was a tiny girl doing street dancing; all very sweet and impressive until she did a bit of the "grabbing at the crotch" thing, which I must admit made me feel quite uncomfortable.

exactly janeite! admittedly there was no crotch grabbing on cbeebies but there was definitely a bit too much hip action for my liking [prude emoticon].

like so many things today, i just think its another way of encouraging children to grow up too soon

my children do street dance, and LOVE IT.

we'll be sticking to gymnastics and ballet til a bit older then.

Don't get me wrong Pyschomum - I really do thin that most of it looks absolutely amazing; tis only the crotch bit I don't like!

ditto - i think it is wonderfully athletic, spectacular, funky and entertaining - but it should be done by children who are old enough to have an awareness of possible connotations within the routines.

well mine don;t 'crotch grab'!

no need for crotch grabbing in street, and if you have seen it on one dance, please don;t assume that it is in all street dancing.

but if you are concerned about what it looks like on teenies, have you not seen the bollywood dancing (wrong name I am sure but have no idea on the right name....sorry).....that is all hip wiggling and belly rolling, and I have seen that on cbeebies (or used to....not had cbeebieds on in yonks, tis all hannah montana and HSM nowadays). it does not make me think it should not be done, or shown.....it is a form of dance, that is all.
