to think that people should give their children names that "fit" together?

by the way this is only a light hearted thought so please don't get too cross but I read an article in doctors waiting room about Lauren Booth whose daughters are Alexandra and Holly. Now why would you choose elegant, classic, easily shortened, Alexandra and then choose Holly which is in the Milly Molly Mandy school of overly baby girl names imo?

My favourite cultural mismatched names are Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. I've always thought they must have gone through life wishing they had the other's name (I have one of those names, and I know I would have done).

It is noticeable when names come out of completely different boxes, but interesting. I had a friend at university who's elder brother was (I think) Robert, but she and her younger brother had Greek names after their aunt married a Greek man and their mum took a fancy to the names.

elf are you my cousin Im Sophie and my sister is Chloe. Our brother is Liam.

Fossil · 08/08/2008 21:46

Paula Yates went on to have Peaches and Pixie cos she said she couldn't have Fifi saying "and this is my sister, Jane". Apparently.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 08/08/2008 21:48

4andnotout... hmmm.... I dont remember the Liam but distant cousins. There was another child, though I cannot remember the name.

4andnotout · 08/08/2008 21:50

Ah im only one of 3

Podrick · 08/08/2008 21:56

I don't like it when siblings share the same first initial - I think it sounds twee and must be awkward re opening each other's post by mistake

eg Molly & Max
YUK

berolina · 08/08/2008 21:58

I know siblings Luca, Linus and Lena. All nice names but the collective effect is .

My dses' names are very different in popularity and provenance, but 'fit' well together IMHO.

CuckooClockWorkOrange · 08/08/2008 21:59

Scarlet and Amber go together... strange comment from teacher.

bamboostalks · 08/08/2008 22:02

I have an unusual name where as my brother is Jack. We received many comments growing up.

pointydog · 08/08/2008 22:03

Years and years ago, a vague acquaintance had a son Robert and his surname was Probert.

DontCallMeBaby · 08/08/2008 22:06

My FIL intentionally gave DH and his brother the same initials, something to do with confusing credit agencies and suchlike - strange man.

Heated · 08/08/2008 22:09

I know of twins called Ben and Rico - parents named one each.

When using their full monikers, my dc' names don't pair very well at all, except when dd's is foreshortened - one is OT biblical and the other is French - but they're not matching cushion covers.

2luvlyboys · 08/08/2008 22:21

Never even occurred to me that my childrens names should fit together btw!!

emj23 · 08/08/2008 23:56

I think the Duggar family are running out of J names. They have a Jeremiah and a Jedediah, and two girls called Johanna and Joy-Anna, which sound pretty much the same to me, not to mention that one name is a bit of a cheat - Jinger. Crikey. If you will have 16 kids and decide to name them all beginning with J though...

Back on topic, I don't think Alexandra and Holly are that badly matched, they're both lovely names. Holly isn't short for anything so it's not one of those MMM things as far as I can see.

MrsTicklemouse · 09/08/2008 00:18

YABslightlyU but i sometimes wonder if calling our boys Ollie (although technically Oliver) and Freddie was a bit twee!

MrsTicklemouse · 09/08/2008 00:21

on the different parents choices POV DS1s middle name (Joel) was chosen by DH and i hate it!!

KristinaM · 09/08/2008 00:28

oh I love Serena but Dh didnt.

not that i wish to have the same taste in names as a woman called fanjolina

solo · 09/08/2008 00:32

My two definitely don't fit together. Ds has a Biblical, popular and traditional name and Dd has a modern, unusual(ish) and non traditional name. They are individual little people. Their names don't have to fit together IMO.

Pisha · 09/08/2008 01:02

I know someone who has Emily, Elliot, Ellis and Eloise.

I can't help but think that that must be incredibly confusing amongst other things!

charliecat · 09/08/2008 01:42

My dds names go far too well. Tasha and Tanya.
But next to my best mates kids Geminii and Leo, Tasha and Tanya fades into significance.
My cousins kids are Clement and Braxton.

Sherida · 09/08/2008 09:48

2 of my friends had twins. One set was a boy and a girl they called Buddy and Holly. The other was 2 boys they called Jack and Daniel. I couldn't help but laugh when I was told. What were the parents thinking?!

I think they go together brilliantly, especially Jack and Daniel ;).

Samantha28 · 09/08/2008 11:40

charliecat - natasha ( tasha) and tatiana ( tanya) are both Russian names, i think they are lovely together

charliecat · 09/08/2008 12:15

Thank you Someone else mentioned the russian connection once

cthea · 09/08/2008 13:43

Mine have German names. We only noticed after the last one as individually they don't scream German.

2luvlyboys · 09/08/2008 21:22

Does the fact that my 2 have biblical names mean that I would have to choose another biblical name or it would look odd? This is totally a hypothetical question btw situation not going to occur as I am NOT having a 3rd in a million years!!!
