to think that people should give their children names that "fit" together?

by the way this is only a light hearted thought so please don't get too cross but I read an article in doctors waiting room about Lauren Booth whose daughters are Alexandra and Holly. Now why would you choose elegant, classic, easily shortened, Alexandra and then choose Holly which is in the Milly Molly Mandy school of overly baby girl names imo?

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/08/2008 11:43

as in Ann might long to have a fancier name like Isabella

Tigerschick · 08/08/2008 11:44

I know where you are coming from ... I once taught a little girl called Lambretta; her older brother was called Jack and her older sister was called Molly ... they didn't really 'go'.

However, I guess that the majority of people just go with names that they like.
It just happens that people tend to like the same sort of names. It seems people either like traditional names or unusual names or names from different cultures or invented names or ...

Anna8888 · 08/08/2008 11:47

But there are also cases of names that "go together" too well and it all sounds a bit silly - my partner's first cousins (brother and sister) are called Charles and Caroline which I think is both odd and boring. My sister's MIL is one of five girls and they all have names beginning with C (as do all their descendants unless DILs don't comply ).

And there are families where all the girls' names end in -ia, or all the boys in -les or something. Personally I think a bit more variety is a lot more interesting

VinegarTits · 08/08/2008 11:48

What rule book of life says that siblings names have to fit/rhyme? and who cares anyway?

Pinkjenny · 08/08/2008 11:49

I do know what you mean. BF has Holly, and is pg again, wants Amelia. Somehow, I don't think they go.

Pinkmist · 08/08/2008 11:55

I have a Euan and a Lewis. Do they fit?

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/08/2008 11:56

I don't see why Holly doesn't 'go' with Amelia ? Euan and Lewis seem fine together !

PhyllidaPoisson · 08/08/2008 11:56

I have Philomena, Edgar, Scarlett, Georgina, Rupert and Wayne.

Wanna make something of it?

zippitippitoes · 08/08/2008 11:57

lol what a strange op why domt alexander and holly make suitable names for sisters

i have rebecca and holly

belgo · 08/08/2008 11:58

Holly and Amelia go together fine. Both fashionable names.

Alexandra and Holly go together fine as well, not that it matters.

I dislike matching names for siblings, particularly if ths siblings grow up hating each other.

singersgirl · 08/08/2008 11:58

I know exactly what you mean. Since I'm going to be talking about my children together for a long time, I'd like them to have names of the same genre. But of course it doesn't matter. And actually I think Alexandra and Holly sound fine together.

We know one family where the girls are called Saffron(fashionable, modern-ish name), Perdita (unusual Latin-derivation name) and Christine (very 60s/70s name). I think they sound odd together.

I also think it's odd when all the children in the family are known by diminutives except one (eg Sammy, Nicholas and Bertie.)

PhyllidaPoisson · 08/08/2008 11:59

Holly, Polly, Dolly and Wally.

belgo · 08/08/2008 12:00

My dd1 has an english name, dd2 has a germanic name. Very different, but both names I adore. And they have very different characters.

belgo · 08/08/2008 12:01

lol PP

PuppyMonkey · 08/08/2008 12:04

I know a woman who has all the Little Women. Jo, Beth, Amy and Megan.

Bit sad imho...

FabioTheLiterateCat · 08/08/2008 12:06

TV thing last night where everyone had a name beginning with K - parents and children.
THe teenager - Kizzy - had a baby and called him Kaylib, pronounced Caleb.
I reckoned they'd exhaused the K's that they liked, nad so were moving on to mad unusual spellings.

And what about Jermaine Jackson and George Foreman?

Jermaine Jackson's children:
Jermaine
Autumn
Jeremy
Jaimy
Jourdyn
Jaffar
Jermajesty ffs

"Foreman has 10 children, and each of his five sons is named George: George Jr., George III, George IV, George V, and George VI." And one of his dds is called Georgette. (Wikipedia)

PS Jermajesty is not called Jermajesty ffs. The ffs was mine. Jermajesty ffs would be cruel.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/08/2008 12:09

I have three cousins (siblings). The girls have Eastern European unpronouncable names with lots of Zs and odd consonant combinations. Their brother is called Gary...

ghosty · 08/08/2008 12:17

There was no Megan in Little Women. She was called Meg, short for Margaret. Not Megan. So they tripped up a bit there didn't they? I love it when people do something poncey like that but screw up ... LOL

noonki · 08/08/2008 12:26

all of my kids begin with the same letter 'j'and it makes me cringe when I tell people

It was purely because we struggled to find any boys names we all liked

fabio - I think when DS4 comes along jermajesty would fit in beautifully

ihatebikerides · 08/08/2008 12:28

So if you name all your kids with the same initial, who opens post addressed to inital + surname?

Reginaphilangy · 08/08/2008 12:30

YABU

Alexandra and Holly sound beautiful together ...and who gives a shit if they don't?

expatinscotland · 08/08/2008 12:31

I think they should chose names they like and that suit the children.

All of ours have Scottish/Gaelic names, which also suit them well.

Chocolateteapot · 08/08/2008 12:32

I have only met one other person in my life with my name, though have heard of a few others. My brother is called Tom.

Personally I think Alexandra and Holly sound fine together as do Amelia and Holly.

gagamama · 08/08/2008 12:35

I sort of agree, sometimes I do wonder what convulted thought processes people must go through to end up with such immensely different names (like the Beckham kids - Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz?! One's a bridge, one's a Shakespeare character and one's a Spanish surname. WTF? Or Brangelina's Vivienne and Knox - one sounds like a fashion designer and the other a murderer) but at the end of the day, kids are only kids at home living with their siblings for a very short portion of their overall lives. And they're individual people. Once they go out into the world, nobody will know (or care) how well they 'match' with their siblings' names.

What also annoys me is when people 'adopt' cultures or languages other than their own to name their children. What annoys me even more is when they don't stick to the same culture or language for all their kids. It's just tacky and makes the parents (and eventually the kids) look stupid.

My two both have vintage names which I think do match, but only by virtue of the fact they are old-fashioned. They just happened to be names which were family names that I really loved.

Tortington · 08/08/2008 12:38

my 6th ds is called Conan, his brother is Barbarian - i think they go together loverly
