MIL is in a rest home. Nice little place, quite impressed so far. But they have a cat, and I don't like it going into her room. I think it's unhygenic to have cat hair about the place, with delicate lungs and general elderly ill-health. I've asked them to keep it out of there or get rid of it. They have refused.

YABU. Cats are not unhygenic and won't affect anyones health unless they are allergic to cats.

well i worked in a residential home, and on a weekly basis someone would bring in a dog, for the old dears to pet and stroke, there is a whole business out there in Pets in Homes, stroking a pet, as mentioned already is therapeutic, good for the heart and cheers people up.

The elderly have few enough pleasures in life, and by their age are more concerned with quality than quantity of time they have left.
