sexy, well am I? i was waiting at a bus stop today and heard a mother call her baby son "sexy", as in "come here sexy man". It suddenly occurred to me how much i hear this and how much it irritates me. It just doesn't seem right to refer to your child as sexy.

shiny, I am fully aware that i don't have to use that term, and i don't, how do you know what they mean, do you use the word and mean something esle, if so why don't you just use the correct word in the first place.

I have posted because i was curious on what the general consensus would be on the issue, not because i think parents who use the phrase behave inappropiately towards thier children. People can behave inappropriately towards thier children in lots of different ways, and you might think something is acceptable that i do not, thats what makes us individual, i was simply asking a question. I have my thoughts you have yours like you said thats our perogative. You might not have mean't your post to be offensive but quite frankly implying and stating something your thought i was thinking is.

Ok morethan I'll go back to saying nothing. I was just giving an alternative opinion because although I don't use the term in that context, I have heard people use it inoffensively in the way I describe. People aren't perfect.

And you've LOADS and LOADS of support on this thread (which I read after I'd posted; I wasn't trying to be controversial, I just posted what came into my mind) so don't let my inane ramblings offend you, they're really not worth it. And I wasn't saying what you were thinking (as if!.. I was suggesting what it might look as if you were thinking.

Back to exile I go. How stupid of me to come back to Mumsnet.

Hey chefswife. Don't mind me, I was just being pedantic! I studied Antigone (the play) in my youth and as a consequence have strong views on Oedipus (oh and Freud too )

I sort of agree with Shiny... I know what the term means, but when meant in jest I don't see a problem.

But each to their own ?
