sexy, well am I? i was waiting at a bus stop today and heard a mother call her baby son "sexy", as in "come here sexy man". It suddenly occurred to me how much i hear this and how much it irritates me. It just doesn't seem right to refer to your child as sexy.

yanbu.

mosschops30 · 24/07/2008 20:54

I call ds a 'sexy little toad' sorry. But never in public and i dont think its like calling him 'sexy little man/boy'

mamadiva · 24/07/2008 21:04

I have heard people doing this and it makes me cringe. It's not a term that should be associated with children at any point. I call my DS gorgeous but that's totally different.

sweetkitty · 24/07/2008 21:10

yuck!

chefswife · 24/07/2008 21:25

sexy! really. that's odd. i wonder if it is the beginnings of the oedipus complex.

Dozymare · 24/07/2008 21:29

oh chefs wife - please elaborate on oedipus complex, no idea what that is but sounds like a good theory!

chefswife · 24/07/2008 21:54

it's from Greek mythology. he was the son of Jocasta and Laius, King of Thebes. Laius was told by an oracle that he would be killed by his son, so he left him on a mountain, where he was rescued and raised by a shepherd. he returned to Thebes after solving the riddle of the sphinx, killed Laius and married Jocasta. when he discovered the truth, he poked his eyes out in madness and Jocasta hung herself. it's also from Macbeth. not sure if Freud coined the term, but in psychology it refers to the lovers love of mother and son. it is a bit odd to call your son 'sexy' even in fun.

Dozymare · 24/07/2008 21:59

cripes - that certainly is ringing the old bells now you have explained...I was soooo bad at classics at school - got 11& in one exam!!! Shame I didn't sit next to someone like you!!!!!!!!!!

Good theory BTW

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 24/07/2008 21:59

Oh my god, SO wrong. Yuck.

chefswife · 24/07/2008 22:03

my head is full of useless information... i'm quite the popular person when it comes trivia pursuit though.

TheSmallClanger · 24/07/2008 22:07

YANBU, even if you accept it as a joke, it's still tacky and awful.

sheepgomeep · 24/07/2008 22:12

quite common round here.

I hate it

sfxmum · 24/07/2008 22:13

YANBU how vile

NoBiggy · 24/07/2008 22:17

MIL said it about DD1 when she was 8 weeks old.

One of many things about MIL that pissed me off at the time.

It is particularly nasty, I feel.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 24/07/2008 22:19

I call DS, gorgeous boy and every so often you wonderful hunk of handsomeness.

What?!?! I have never heard that.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 24/07/2008 22:24

Re

Oedipus Complex...

That always reminds of a line that has stayed with me forever, from "Just Good Friends"

Vince's brother is very attached to his DM.

The father throws his hands up in exasperation.......That boy has an Oedipus complex !!!!!

The mother replies(straight faced) I don't care what he has got.....................

So long as he loves his Mum.

LongLiveGreenElizabeth · 24/07/2008 22:26

Bree, yeah I do that, I call my ds gorgeous, cutie, el guapito, that's ok though isn't it?

Tippychick · 24/07/2008 22:28

It's just wrong. Women do it to their children more than men I've noticed, or maybe I just see more women with their children.
Lucyellensmum, I know you don't mean it 6that6 way when you call dogs and horses sexy but it still makes me cringe! Sorry. You're not alone though, I've heard lots of women and girls refer to their horses as sexy or sexy bum

BroccoliSpears · 24/07/2008 22:29

I've heard people say it and it clangs. Icky. And I call my children all manner of endearments and pet names.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 24/07/2008 22:29

LGJ to LGE

Of course it is, it is the sexualising of children we are objecting to here.

it would be creepy to hear a father say his daughter was sexy. i just wonder why mothers do this and they think it's not.

susiecutiebananas · 24/07/2008 23:00

gorgeous, yes. sexy? horribly disgusting!

I call my DD, and my nieces ad nephews all kinds of endearments but never, ever sexy!! It would not be on my radar when thinking or talking about/to a child. DO the people who say it not see how inappropriate it is?
