Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

I get big bags for life and tip the crate of food in those by the door, so I can take it into the kitchen - takes second and then the driver can get away quickly. I know they’re monitored on their delivery drop times.

Those at use Ocado, don't you find that sometimes heavy bottles are placed on top of of other stuff like Brie or bread and it's all squashed and sometimes packets are split and stuff leaking. I know you can get a refund but I would never order bleach from them or stuff like that.

as others have said, the bags are colour coded for different types of groceries so bleach would not be food. However, I still get the squashed/leaky groceries issues with other supermarkets who don't use bags. One of the supermarkets here uses wheeled trollies so the stuff from the crates gets tipped placed into quite deep trollies to wheel to the house and so things can still get damaged and squashed. Being in a carrier bag is not the only way that things get damaged. It's quite a lot of handling and packing/unpacking all the way up to the front door with all supermarkets.

I don't want those dirty old trays in my kitchen.
I can't lift them.
The driver is grateful to be on their way quicker.
I have a pile of bags in the porch and transfer it all then unpack at leisure.

mindutopia · Yesterday 14:16

Because it’s so much faster and I don’t have time to put it all away (except frozen), so it goes into bags and before the end of the day, I will put it away.

Dh, on the other hand, just takes it all out and dumps it in a pile on the floor next to the door. And then walks away because his job is done. Then I have a massive pile of shopping blocking the door with no easy way of moving it. Bags are so much easier.

InjuredDuck · Yesterday 14:16

Because you have to walk through my long ass living room into the kitchen and I cant be arsed doing it with the trays with the guy standing there. I unload in a minute or two then unpack at my leisure with toddler

Granniefanny · Yesterday 14:18

I have 3 large washing baskets next to the door, shopping is put straight in those. Then carried to kitchen when delivery driver has left. I even sort into fridge, freezer and larder. It works a treat.

i chuck it into bags or a box by the door so the driver can get on his way.

Same. It never occurred to me to leave him standing there while I put the shopping away.

I also chunk in bags so the driver can head off and I can unpack at my own leisure... I thought that was normal?

yep!! I always do this thinking of the driver who will have more deliveries to make after mine. Once the guy said oh you can take the tray and unpack if you want but it never occurred to me before!

Tumbleweed101 · Yesterday 14:21

I take the crates into the kitchen and unpack onto the counters. I don’t really have a hall so there wouldn’t be any room to unpack onto bags and it would take longer overall.

Eyelashesoffire · Yesterday 14:22

I don't really understand how it's quicker to do crate - work surface - cupboards than crate - bags - cupboards.

I'd never really thought about taking the crates inside, I guess I just thought it's quicker for the driver for me to get it all into big IKEA bags at the front door.

There's so much crap around the house carrying crates through would feel like a risky obstacle course. And there's so many glass bottles or packages liable to split I wouldn't want to just tip everything out.

It's given me pause for thought, if carrying crates might work!

GentleSheep · Yesterday 14:26

Usually the driver carries the crates a very short distance to the cleared kitchen bench and we both unload the items. I have back problems and can't carry heavy bags. Occasionally a driver will just dump the bags on the open doorstep and go, clearly in a hurry. This is much more difficult for me to deal with, I have to take items out piecemeal and anything heavy have to call my DP to deal with it. Fortunately that doesn't happen too often.

Totaldramallama · Yesterday 14:33

I keep the trays and then swap them for the new ones next time

Yes, it is!

Happysnappydays · Yesterday 14:44

Ocado use bags? Might switch to them. Happy to return them next time.

rainingcats · Yesterday 14:44

I just tip out (carefully) the crates onto the floor by the door then enlist my children to help me carry things to the kitchen when the driver has left.
DH will carry the crates into the kitchen and tip out on the worktop.
I don’t think it matters what the technique is as long as its quick and efficient, the delivery drivers don’t have much time so I would rather be quick and let them have a little more time to help people who need it.

Imisscoffee2021 · Yesterday 14:44

I've always unpacked directly into bags, it's quicker than the driver waiting if you take in trays and I don't want the trays hanging round til next delivery.

I'm with you OP. Quicker to carry the crate through to the kitchen and decant everything onto the worktop rather than faf around with getting everything into bags.

Yep I do this but put the crate on the range oven not the kitchen surfaces as they are unhygienic

Can't see how it takes much longer than packing into bags and kitchen is about 10 steps away from front door

No, Ocado separate different items into colour coordinated bags. Freezer stuff is separate, fridge stuff, cupboard, heavy stuff, meat etc.

Brie and bread would never be in the same bag.
Cleaning products have never been mixed in with food for me.

Agreed. I have next to no problems with Ocado's packing. This thread is making me realise what a great deal the Ocado Smart Pass is. None of this faffing about at the door. I just take the bags out of the crate, or the driver does, and carry them through to the kitchen when he or she has gone. I give the bags back every few weeks which makes a nice bonus bit of money off that week. I hadn't realised all the other supermarkets had abandoned bags. What a nonsense.

Same - I use my laundry basket for the smaller items and just heft the larger onto the kitchen counter (door to kitchen very close).

gonoodleoodle · Yesterday 14:47

I’ve only got online shopping twice and both times I asked the delivery man to bring the trays into kitchen and I tipped the trays out onto my kitchen benches. Much easier.

Surely you can just clean your worktops after putting the crates on them? That's what I do.

Sp you keep 3 large laundry baskets next to your door just for the shopping?

Your house is clearly much bigger than mine

Well it's not a nonsense if you don't want to use 10 plastic bags every week.

You give the bags back though and get your money back so in effect you’re using the same 10 bags over and over again.

My kitchen is by the front door so I just bring in the crates and unpack in the kitchen.
