Unpack online food shopping into bags!!

Please help me understand why would you unpack food delivered to your house into bags?

I obviously understand if you would struggle to lift the heavy trays that putting it into bags is better.

but my friend was over when I had my shopping delivered and she couldn’t understand why I carry the trays into my kitchen and not unpack into bags.

as I am physically able to carry the trays, how is it easier to unload into bags then unload again into kitchen ??

You can drag bags.

i chuck it into bags or a box by the door so the driver can get on his way.

My kitchen is tiny and I get a whole week's shopping for 3 adults delivered every week.

I'd run out of counter space by the 3rd crate and there's normally between 6 and 7 of them.

But it takes hardly any time to fling it all into huge Sports Direct or Primark bags, and drag them into my kitchen when the deliverer has gone.

I also chunk in bags so the driver can head off and I can unpack at my own leisure... I thought that was normal?

Same.

I unload the trays at my back door (utility room) and sort the things into bags aa i unpack the trays eg frozen things into one bag, fridge things into another, things for a particular cupboard go into the same bag etc. It is very quick to do, quicker for the delivery person and quicker for me. Plus I don't want to manhandle the trays through my utility and hall into my kitchen, empty them out on to table/counters, then manhandle them back to the back door again.

My deliveries from waitrose come into the kitchen where i unpack straight onto the table.

I also chuck into bags at the door so the driver can get going again.

I put mine into my washing basket and reusable bags to make it quicker for the delivery driver

McJibes · Yesterday 12:01

I pack into laundry baskets at the doorstep so the drivers can get on. I couldn't imagine holding them up while I take my time to unpack at my leisure. They don't get enough time allocated for those that need the extra time or assistance such as the elderly, disabled or infirm.

I chuck everything into bags by the door out of respect for the driver's time

Poppingby · Yesterday 12:04

I normally take the crates in, empty onto counters, give create back. Recently hurt my shoulder and had to do the bag method. Can confirm taking the crates in its quicker and less faffy for me and the driver. However people get very practised at their preferred method don't they.

I pack mine into those large ikea bags at the door

Retne · Yesterday 12:06

I have huge separate bags for

Frozen
Heavy
Light

And then a panic bag where anything goes! 🤣

NoWordForFluffy · Yesterday 12:06

We unpack into the hall and then take it either to the kitchen or garage, depending on where it needs to go. It's easier with the dog to do that, as we can keep him separated from the front door / shopping by the baby gate we have installed. It's also quicker for the driver to get away as they have very little time allocated per delivery.

OriginalSkang · Yesterday 12:06

I just put it loose on the floor and let the delivery person leave. I don't want those manky crates in my house tbh

TheeNotoriousPIG · Yesterday 12:06

Your friend would be horrified by me, then, OP! I tip everything bar the eggs out of the trays onto the floor to speed up the process so that the delivery drivers can go on their way. I am fortunate that I have a big enough utility room to do this!

After getting advice on MN I ask the Waitrose driver to carry the crates to the kitchen table and I quickly take the contents out. Put away after they’ve gone.

They’ve always been happy to do that.

AppropriateAdult · Yesterday 12:09

I’m with you, OP - carry the crates into the kitchen, dump everything out onto the counter, return crates to door. I don’t see how this takes any longer than transferring everything into bags at the door, which seems like a really pointless additional step.

HoraceCope · Yesterday 12:10

i used to take large bags to the door, put the shopping in t hem so the driver can leave quickly

DoAWheelie · Yesterday 12:10

I no longer get supermarket deliveries as I use services that deliver within an hour now. But when I still used them the driver just dropped the crates into my hallway, grabbed last weeks crates and left.

I had no idea this wasn't standard tbh. It was far easier than trying to madly unpack everything and wrangle the thief cat at the same time while the driver awkwardly stood waiting.

This. Takes a minute or two to quickly put in in bags for life then he can get to his next drop.

I wouldn’t want to have to keep 4-5 massive crates for a week to be honest! I have nowhere to store them.

But why would unpacking into laundry baskets be quick and considerate, while dumping the items directly onto your kitchen counters is “unpacking at your leisure”? Confused

TheHateIsNotGood · Yesterday 12:13

I respect the constrained time limits that the drivers need to adhere to and unload the trays into bags I have waiting inside by the door.
