For putting on a wash that finished at 20 past 8pm

Just got a complaint from my neighbour for putting on a wash that finished 5 minutes ago.

AIBU to think that 9pm is a reasonable cut off point?

Does your washing machine need a service or rubber feet?

If it is excessively noisy or vibrating, the type of noise that really travels, it is considerate to get it fixed regardless of what time you use it.

If you have the option, consider a rubber mat to place underneath the machine to help minimise any vibration travelling downwards.

Also if your neighbour is generally sane, maybe ask to come down and hear the sound when it's on the spin cycle? You'll see then whether they are being fair or unreasonable and whether you need to look at whether the legs need adjusting or something.

But no YANBU with the timing, it's not late at all, even if it does make a loud noise, which I would try to rectify.

With our last but one flat it was the water pipes which caused an issue - they were routed badly so it was really loud for our downstairs neighbour if we did anything that put a lot of water down the drain, like a shower/washing machine/dishwasher, so we agreed not to do these things past 11pm, but even that is a bit restrictive sometimes - our current place doesn't have this issue at all, I can hear my neighbour's WM faintly (and find it annoying but accept this is my issue) but only ever hear drainage in the downstairs loo, so it doesn't disturb anything at all.

I'd ask neighbour if I could go into her flat and listen to the noise while your w/m is going. That will tell you whether s/he is bonkers or you need to do the washing earlier.

But since many people do not TALK to each other these days, that might not happen.

However, I'd try to speak with neighbour to reach a compromise, if there is a disturbance for her that you can verify.

Good grief, what are your walls made of in the UK? I have never in my life heard a neighbour's washing machine.

How loud is your washing machine to be heard next door?
Or does it vibrate through walls?
Either way, I'd try to be considerate.

This. It's not an unreasonable time but they must have had a reason to ask - eg early shift or kids they're trying to put to bed at that time.

It’s an integrated machine so I can’t put a mat underneath it. I don’t think it’s particularly loud. I just think my neighbour is quite controlling. She has put up signs all over the building about not slamming the front door, no loud music, keeping dogs from barking etc

Where we live the rules are not to make noise before 7am or after 10pm. I try not to have the washing machine on after 9pm but sometimes we are a little later. Complaining about 8.25pm is bonkers so just ignore the daft woman.

She should probably live in a field.

What’s your neighbour got to do with your washing?!

That's ridiculous it's a perfectly fine time, I put mine on a timer so it starts at 4:30am finished by 6:30am and I hang it up when I get up shortly after

Both of my next door neighbours work regular shift patterns..And need to sleep. And the walls of the flats are very thin.

So putting on washer at 4.40 am would not be appropriate.

PeperNotNutsNoten · Today 06:35

You're unreasonable, it's the weekend. Flats need everyone to be considerate. Once one person starts being even a bit selfish, everyone else stops trying, then it's hell. Our neighbours do diy until 7. It wakes up our toddler and means we can't hear the tv, so then we disturb the next neighbour with crying toddler and the volume too high etc.

Laurmolonlabe · Today 08:20

Just ignore them, that is completely unreasonable- but I would look into better sound insulation .

Neighbor is being a whinge.

We had a flat where the kitchen was over our neighbour’s bedroom. It was very annoying for all of us. So it depends how much noise your machine is creating. Even so, 9pm seems a reasonable cut off. Also how much washing are you doing. Has it been on all day?
