Just got a complaint from my neighbour for putting on a wash that finished 5 minutes ago.

AIBU to think that 9pm is a reasonable cut off point?

I do my washing on a timer at 3am, I’m glad I don’t have neighbours because I couldn’t be dealing with people complaining. It’s set to then because I don’t fall asleep easily but I’m usually asleep by 3. Better then than while I’m watching tv or working.

SallyAnnDrivesACar · 31/10/2026 21:21

They are having a party next door... send her round here 😉

Springtimeinsunshine · 31/10/2026 21:23

It depends doesn't it. Is your machine "walking" across the floor? Is it vibrating the party wall or suspended floor joists? Put a special mat under it, fix the feet or bearings before saying your neighbour is out of order.

Lifeomars · 31/10/2026 21:24

Petty and pathetic, put your wash on at any time you want or need, it that is all she has got to moan about then she doesn't have a clue about real noisy neighbours. I had some who were so awful with endless screaming and yelling that i could only use my kitchen if i had ear plugs in. The noise often went on for around 12 hours a day with drunken fighting, endless people coming and going and drug dealing. Someone getting wound up about a washing machine is bonkers

Isitmyluckyday · 31/10/2026 21:26

Depends how loud your washing machine is and how well insulated the party walls, and whether the joists shake on the spin cycle. Have you asked her?

IDontLikePinaColadas · 31/10/2026 21:26

Blimey! Even in Switzerland the sound restrictions aren’t that strict. YANBU at all

LondonLass2026 · 31/10/2026 21:28

That wouldn't bother me at all. I've said many times on here about my noisy neighbour who doesn't work and blasts dance music all day long, has a very yappy dog who is never walked, and is literally never off the phone, screaming and shouting. Sonos speakers up against the party wall. She's also an alcoholic.

Washing machine noise would be a pleasure!

I do suppose it's all relative though. Are you terraced, above/below her? Previous issues?

BlueMum16 · 31/10/2026 21:29

I didn't realise washing had a deadline. What if you get cheaper overnight electric?

YANBU

SquirrelAteMyTulipBulbs · 31/10/2026 21:30

I guess your walls must be thin for them to find it annoying.

LBFseBrom · 31/10/2026 21:30

Are you in a block of flats? I am and the general consensus is not to have the washing machines going after 9pm. Some people probably do, I couldn't care less, it doesn't bother me.

Before I moved here and was in my house, I'd put the washing machine on at 2am and go to bed if I felt like. Nobody could hear it, even I couldn't when upstairs.

Your neighbours are being a bit much.

likelysuspect · 31/10/2026 21:34

I wouldnt even hesitate or think about doing washing at any time of the day or night, same with hooovering, when I need to do it, I do it.

Jk987 · 31/10/2026 21:36

what sort of home have you got that it bothers the neighbours?

thistimelastweek · 31/10/2026 21:36

Yep.
Let's treat our neighbours by the lowest standards. Don't give a shit about their comfort or wellbeing
And then be surprised when they in turn treat us badly

Seriously?.
You think intrusive noise from your neighbours at 11.00pm is ok?

Well she said ’before 11pm’, so it would be finished by 11pm. But yes, I’d think the noise of a washing machine would be reasonable at that time.

Inheritancequestions · 31/10/2026 21:38

I think up to 10pm, maybe a bit later is fine.

Ultraalox · 31/10/2026 21:39

MeowDoku · 31/10/2026 20:26

That's ridiculous it's a perfectly fine time, I put mine on a timer so it starts at 4:30am finished by 6:30am and I hang it up when I get up shortly after

Same!

CherryBlossom321 · 31/10/2026 21:40

Are you in a flat? Is it rattling away above them?

Aussiemum87 · 31/10/2026 21:40

I’d be doing it everyday at that time now

I don’t think 11 pm is very late. It wouldn’t bother me if I could hear noise from my neighbours until midnight, especially on a weekend night.

PonkyPonky · 31/10/2026 21:48

Not enough information really. I can hear my neighbours machine going at midnight sometimes but it’s only possible to very faintly hear it if my house is totally silent so it’s absolutely fine at any time of night.
If you live in an upstairs flat with bare floorboards under your washing machine and the neighbour lives below you then you’re unreasonable.

Franthefern · 31/10/2026 22:01

I put on my washing machine at midnight.
I don't tend to put on the dryer as it has a series of electronic beeps and the utility room is under DC's bedroom and disturbs him.
If you are in an apartment and your neighbour is overhead, consideration needs to be shown by everyone for everyone though.

OhTheCowsInTheMeadowGoMoo · 31/10/2026 22:02

I work shifts so sometimes put mine on at 11pm at night. They'd hate me 😁

FFS, do you not understand that "before 11" and "at 11" are two different concepts?

Nofeckingway · 31/10/2026 22:12

If it is shaking and making a lot of noise then something is wrong with your machine . If you are in a flat you can put the machine on a rubber mat to absorb the sound . But I think 9pm is a pretty reasonable time for any household noise .

Chiefunderling · 31/10/2026 22:16

Your neighbour is being very unreasonable OP. I live in a flat & the latest wash I do finishes at 8.30pm. I go to bed early so that’s late for me but I think up 10pm is completely reasonable & of course later in an emergency. I wouldn’t dream of complaining about hearing a neighbour’s washing machine. It’s normal household noise. Some people have a cheaper energy tariff over night so may want to do the washing then. Times are tough & I wouldn’t complain in that case either.

Do not engage with your neighbour. Ignore unreasonable requests & carry on. You haven’t done anything wrong & washing machine noise is normal household noise. Your neighbour should go live in a detached property if they cannot handle hearing ordinary household noise.
