Just got a complaint from my neighbour for putting on a wash that finished 5 minutes ago.

AIBU to think that 9pm is a reasonable cut off point?

I wouldnt even hesitate or think about doing washing at any time of the day or night, same with hooovering, when I need to do it, I do it.

I didn't either. But then I visited a friend's flat where the neighbours washing machine and vacuum cleaner sounded as if they were in the same room as us. I sometimes wondered if the washing machine was louder for us, because it felt like it was bouncing against the wall.

Now I very much appreciate my privilege in having a detached house, and that at my previous semi, my washing machine and my neighbour's were at opposite ends of our houses.

FFS, do you not understand that "before 11" and "at 11" are two different concepts?

FFS do you not get it's a fine line?

TwentyDunhill · 31/10/2026 22:24

No, not unreasonable at all. What did they say when they complained?

10cupsofcoffeeplease · 31/10/2026 22:28

Your neighbour is batshit crazy

PaisleyElephant · 31/10/2026 22:29

How odd, is your machine unusually loud? I don't even hear my own washing machine in my own house let alone the neighbours, especially at this time of year with doors and windows closed, and not sitting in the garden

SoIWillGoToLunarValleysInMyMind · 31/10/2026 22:31

I live in a flat and we are not allowed to use any "noisy appliances" before 7am or after 7pm. My neighbour complained to my landlord for using my washing machine too late when I first moved in before I knew the rules

SlowSlowerSlowest · 31/10/2026 23:02

My mum used to say to not hoover or wash once the soaps came on and usual baby bedtimes at 7pm, but that was decades ago and she grew up in a post war flat so I imagine the walls probably vibrated if someone so much as farted let alone anything else. Our neighbours regularly have a wash on up to 10pm but we have utilities and only really hear it in each others utilities during the spin. If it affected tv watching then I would be annoyed but then you should communicate that with a decent neighbour

Oh god this reminds me of my ex neighbour who I think had dementia. She once came RUNNING into my house shouting at me in Celtic(?) because I had my hairdryer on after 6pm!

Celtic isn’t a language. Do you mean Gaelic or Irish or Welsh… or Cornish?

And what about people who leave for work at 7 and get back just before 7? They’re not allowed to wash their clothes?

Alwayswonderedwhy · 31/10/2026 23:09

Why can your neighbour here your washing machine!?

Seriously?.
You think intrusive noise from your neighbours at 11.00pm is ok?

Oh give over 🙄 It’s hardly an all night rave for goodness sake.

Seriously?.
You think intrusive noise from your neighbours at 11.00pm is ok?

Yes, because intrusive noise is having a party at 2am not washing after dinner

Why can your neighbour here your washing machine!?

Exactly, this is more pertinent. In the more modern bit of our cottage we can hear the odd door knock but that's it

justonemorestitch · 31/10/2026 23:34

Our neighbours do a really early morning wash cycle which wakes us up a couple of times a week…the spin cycle finishes at around 5am. It makes the wall vibrate, which we can hear from our bedroom. The walls aren’t otherwise thin - we can’t hear any other sound. We’ve never complained though, so they aren’t aware.

Not enough information really. I can hear my neighbours machine going at midnight sometimes but it’s only possible to very faintly hear it if my house is totally silent so it’s absolutely fine at any time of night.
If you live in an upstairs flat with bare floorboards under your washing machine and the neighbour lives below you then you’re unreasonable.

Really?? At 8.30??

I dont understand how neighbours can hear your washer. I can't hear my own in the next room or upstairs!

shhblackbag · 31/10/2026 23:45

I've been know to run the dryer in an emergency until 11pm, but I really prefer to stop the machines by 10pm. 8.20pm is early though. The walls must be paper-thin. I have zero idea when upstairs or downstairs do their washing. Can't hear it.

No point asking us, we aren't your neighbours! Better to discuss with your actual neighbour and try to come to an understanding. We have young kids so the cut off would reasonably be early comparef with a single night owl, I've no idea what compromise makes sense for you and your neighbour. Maybe they are an early riser or shift worker, I'm neither
I'd hate to live below someone in flats unless they had solid concrete floors though.

ExhaustedRaccoon · 31/10/2026 23:47

My electricity provider actually promotes washing after 7pm as we get a cheaper rate!

Dillydollydingdong · 31/10/2026 23:47

If it was 3.00 am I could understand it, but not 9.00 pm. She is BU.

Mental unless a clear pattern of dick behaviour preceding this.

I used to live in a basement flat. The neighbours kitchen was above my bedroom. Washing machine on spin sounded like a pneumatic drilling machine, like they use to dig up roads, coming through the ceiling. Great when it woke me at 7am after my insomnia had kept me up until 3am. I never complained though because I'm not a dickhead and they're entitled to do their laundry when it suits them.

Exactly. it's ridiculous. Not allowed to use the hairdryer before I leave for work at 6.30am on a cold winter morning pisses me off more than the washing machine. Yeah the neighbour complained about that too.
