Cant get a bus down Oxford Street
Crime hasn't gone anywhere, only the phone bike thieves due to international outcry
Housing still a mess

I am a lifelong leftie, but I am not voting the current mayor in again.

Do you think you are able to speak for all people with disabilities? What about the people who find the less crowded pavements positively beneficial? Do they not count?

I'm speaking for myself a disabled person and other disabled people like me, or who might agree

Other disabled people are apparently fine with it according to the pps

Yes I have - ive explained how I get to selfridges

And its not just selfridges - let's say i wanted to visit another shop on Oxford Street- its not possible if its not incredibly close

God, great for you that youre not disabled 🙄🙄 maybe stop trying to police how others feel about the changes

I am disabled. So why do you think you have the right to power and decide how I feel about the changes…

hotmumshit · Yesterday 22:19

Now i'm logging off

This thread has become an ablest pile on, with people claiming I am a right wing racist for daring to disagree with the mayor ??

Maybe try accepting legitimate criticism of the mayor, rather than labelling people who aren't entirely happy the enemy 🤷

Love to people who have disabilities who have to listen to people have compare their lives to 'having flats built near them', or 'not getting out with the baby'. What a nightmare, do better! xx

Could easily have out in place a San Francisco style trolley thst runs up and down each end, plenty of room like a hop on hop off. Feel sorry for those with disabilities imagine when its raining. I bet they haven't considered providing sheltered rest areas...benches just token to the elements 🙄

Also its a phone snatcher dream now as we have seen with cyclists having more room to mingle with pedestrians it will be interesting to see those crime stats over time

I dont care what you feel - but you've just sat and told me is dont know what I am talking about and I cant possibly experience what I experience because you've googled selfriges.

Do better, be better to others with disabilities. 💐

Oxford street has gone to shit because good quality shops cant afford the rent - now we're left with candy shops of dubious means

Pedestrianised wont change that. But it will keep people out who love to visit but cant manage the walk.

So sometimes yes we need to sacrifice. But living next to flats and being forced away from somewhere due to disability are not remotely comparable.

I'm not talking about living next to flats. I'm talking about traffic congestion, noise, the toxic components of building large blocks of flats and the reduced value of my house during what looks to likely be a 10 year build. If you're comparing that shit in to being forced away from a store, the two things are not remotely comparable.

And if you think they haven't thought through the economics of pedestrianising and looked at what it's done for other cities with similar issues, I think you're being quite unrealistic. The facts about the economic boosts of that kind of pedestrianising are very easy to look up. You can do a deeper dive, but even the most surface AI search results say you're wrong.

1, 2, 3]
Key Economic Benefits

  • Increased Footfall: Removing cars and redesigning streets typically increases shop footfall by 20% to 40%. 1]
  • Higher Spend and Dwell Time: Research by organizations like Living Streets shows that people who walk or wheel to shop tend to linger longer ("dwell time") and spend more money overall. 1, 2]
  • Higher Gross Value Added (GVA): City projections—such as the Greater London Authorityassessment for the pedestrianisation of nearly 1 km of London's Oxford Street—estimate that removing traffic can generate tens of millions in annual value (e.g., an estimated £82 million per year uplift) through higher retail sales and commercial property spillovers. 1, 2, 3]
  • Property and Rental Value Appreciation: Walkable streets experience higher demand from both commercial tenants and residents, driving up commercial and residential property prices. 1, 2]

What are the economic impacts of making more space for walking and cycling?

Our England South Director, James Cleeton, answers your questions about the impact that pedestrianisation and removing car parking spaces will have on the local economy.

Your entire thread is hyperbole - making up stories about SK, and then complaining you can no longer access Selfridges when you can. So yes, it does seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Issue is by calling people “lefties” and making things up, your thread comes across as disingenuous, hence the “pile on”.

Anyways, I’ll leave you to it. Good night.

And Ps - I don’t need to google to know Selfridges has several entrances, including on the very road that buses will be stopping at.

It wasn't and it didn't. Depends, I suppose, on whether you've got a functioning brain. Luckily some of us have so no, it didn't fall flat.

But despite you bemoaning others for "great for you that youre not disabled 🙄🙄 maybe stop trying to police how others feel about the changes", you seem comfortable dismissing those with disabilities who actually welcome the changes.

If a change makes things better for one group of people with disabilities and harder for those in a different group, does that make the changes a good thing or a bad thing? What about if those who perceive it as having made it harder for them would find it not that much of a difference if they just used an alternative entrance to the shop they want to access?

Not at all, like them dont like them, thats up to you. If it won't change how you vote, fair enough! He has lots of supporters.

But dont tell me i dont know what i'm talking about and I am a right winger or not really a londoner or not disabled because I dont agree with the random suggestions thrown at me about taking the tube 🙄

Its awful and it's not nice for people to say 'well dont shop there' 😕

Based on how this thread has gone from your opening gambit

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · Yesterday 22:47

If the other parties surprised us all by putting up a viable candidate for mayor, I do think that candidate would get voted in but they have all been worse than useless so far so I suspect Londoners of like mind to me have not felt like voting although (certainly in my borough) Sadik is very unpopular and I heard he was booed when he came here a couple of years ago. I used to work in Oxford St. Pedestrianising it will create huge problems. Several major buses used it and the neighbouring roads will not cope. I foresee even worse traffic. Also, people who cannot walk far will be affected.

crackofdoom · Yesterday 22:52

hotmumshit · Yesterday 19:44

We can walk. We cannot walk for long distances. We do not refuse to use a wheelchair, we live in the city and make use of its usual accessibility.

There are a lot of people who fit into this category.

Oh well, guess you'll just have to get the bus down Regent Street instead then. Doesn't it have the nicest lights anyway?

Moros · Yesterday 22:52

I didn't tell you you were a right winger. I didn't tell you you weren't a londoner. I didn't tell you you weren't disabled. I didn't tell you to use the tube. And I didn't tell you "well dont shop there".

All I'm asking is that if there is a change that advantages one group of people with disabilities but would require a group of people with different disabilities to use a different entrance to the shop they want to get to rather than the entrance they used to use, is that a good thing or a bad thing for disabled people overall?

It seems to me that the change increases accessibility to those with disabilities as a class as the first group now has access that they didn't have before, while the second group still has access albeit with a minor change to the exact route they take.
