Jealous of those who live in A-D?

I’ve started seeing comments about budget money funnelled into “welfare areas”. DH and I are nearly 50. We were raised in an under privileged area - he, working class and me foster care. We never moved and as teachers of nearly 30 years I think we may not be net contributors but we work bloody hard.

Here’s to all at the council area workers where we bloody work our arses off - I’ll take any benefit that comes our way!

Our house is band A. We live here because it’s cheap and no one else wanted it 😂 it’s hard to describe without outing myself.

We don’t claim any benefits because we don’t need to.

We don’t have any heating if it makes you feel better?

What will you spend your 100 on?

Fingeronthebutton · 28/10/2026 21:27

As a teacher you seem very unaware. Surely you read, listen to what is going on in the whole country. I obviously don’t mean in detail but just to be award
I hope your never called upon to teach critical thinking.

Not read the thread but I have a friend in Durham whose house is worth £198k according to Rightmove. She's Band E as her house was a new-ish-build detached. I've seen houses up for sale near me for £500k that were apparently in Band B (the same as 2 up 2 down terraces and council/ex-council, half that price, and £375k 3 bed terraces) and one house is currently on the market for £550k, and another £675k (SSTC) house that are in Band C.

I can see a lot of people's bands changing if neighbours start querying/snitching.

Edited

In England at least- can’t say for anywhere else in the UK, even if your house is assessed and rebanded the new band doesn’t kick in until the house is sold.

so say you bought a house in London for 80k in 1990, it’s banded B. You extend significantly while the area also increases in value, so now you have a 4 bed house worth 1.2 million. That’s a rl example btw. You’re still band B. Your neighbour complains, your house is rebanded to E. You remain on band b until you sell.

Probably drugs and avocados.

That is true if the discrepancy in council tax band is attributable to building work, however, if the council tax band was wrong due to error and initial miscalculation, the rise will apply immediately.

Sick of seeing whiny comments from people in Band E homes. You can have my £100 if you want to swap and live in my Band A flat. Worked all my life, tax payer just in case you're wondering.

BugJuice · 28/10/2026 21:44

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2026 15:34

Again, sorry if I’ve posted in bad faith. Where I live - C - is the edge of HMOs and high raise flats. We are settled here but I doubt most people would actively choose to move here. I thought all A-D were areas like mine.

Why did you think that?
I live in a lovely village, with very little crime. There are houses from every band in the village! The bands aren’t based on area.
Mine is band E. I wouldn’t have said no to £100 towards energy bills if it was offered, but I wouldn’t say I’m jealous as a) it would be a drop in the ocean and b) we don’t, strictly speaking, need it.

People complaining about the poorest getting financial support.

We have truly ascended to peak middle class.

The whole point is that it isn't "the poorest" though.

I'll probably benefit from a number of today's announcements - live in c band house and low electricity/gas spend so switching from standing charge to just how much you use will almost definitely lower my bills. I obviously don't begrudge myself getting more money, doesn't mean I can't still think they are ridiculous and unfair policies at the same time.

BugJuice · 28/10/2026 21:46

I should say though that our Band E house is only worth approx £350k

skilpadde · 28/10/2026 21:47

fishingtime · 28/10/2026 15:05

I am band d. I’ll be taking it gratefully and putting it towards my heating oil for which we get no support at all.

Exactly. Our energy bill is £4k pa so we’ll be shafted by the removal of gas standing charges and the unit cost increasing to compensate. The £100 will just be a small bit of compensation.

I think many people, including those
getting this cash are questioning whether this is the best use of money in tough economic times. it also raises all the issues associated with the banding system that Burnham himself recognised and pledged to change. There are anachronisms concerning gentrification or deprivation but there are also ludicrous discrepancies that were baked in during the 1991 second-gear drive by valuations - eg two people with houses of identical rectangles. person one with the long side to the road is in a high council tax band, person two with the short side to the road is in a low band as one house appears large
and one small its a crazy way to collect tax.

Bubblewrap100 · 28/10/2026 21:52

I’m Band A. I don’t need the money but happy to take it. God knows as a single middle-aged woman with no children and on a basic tax rate salary, I’m not eligible for anything else, so makes a change.

WimbyAce · 28/10/2026 21:58

We are Band D, middle to low income and receive no other support so will welcome £100!

Cascadia · 28/10/2026 22:26

Band D here - house worth around a million and earn about 200k. Council tax bands are very outdated.

SevenYellowHammers · 28/10/2026 22:47

MagnoliaParks · 28/10/2026 17:59

It’s mental. I’m D band in Yorkshire, an almost £200k income household in a relatively nice sized house, energy bills have gone up this year to £175 (after being £150 since about 2022). We have an electric car, solar panels and my motto is that I earn too much to feel cold at home so we’re liberal with heating too. Almost all of our laundry is done in the tumble dryer (because through summer it’s free anyway!).

I’m astounded (and disappointed) that there’s a policy whereby I’m being given £100. I’ll probably think about donating it tbh.

Some people donate their cold weather payment. I believe there’s a facility for doing this online.

Sugarleaf · 28/10/2026 23:05

I mean, I earn £90k and live in a 2 bed house in London that is D. So I’m getting it too

But it’s cheaper to do it this way than means test it. They’re not stupid

TerrysNeapolitan · 28/10/2026 23:13

As others have pointed out the tax bands are way off and need an urgent review. Partner and I live in Band D, three bedroom 3 storey town house worth £600 (we are South East) my elderly mother has a small one bedroom house, it is Band E it is worth approx £375k. We are 15 miles apart.

So you get 1-2 weeks of free electricity. And you're outraged because ...?

🤣🤣
doesn’t matter to me, I’m not home much, I go away at least once a month for a week and then I have the odd few nights away if I fancy going somewhere fairly local
🤣🤣

I'm not sure what this thread is about, but plus or minus £100 per month will make zero impact on my finances. If the govt is taking £100 I hope they spend it wisely.

BeLemonMoose · 28/10/2026 23:28

80% of people live in band a to d

Nefariousnewstar · 28/10/2026 23:40

Yetanotherone12 · 28/10/2026 21:37

this is actually quite an amusing game -
find the craziest discrepancies in council tax. So, I see your 550k - band C and I raise you this property in Hull. 5 beds, 3 bathrooms, 730k and a band E. Large house and garden Hull 730k band E

there will be more madness out there. I am staggered and disappointed that Burnham called out the unfairness of the council tax system and yet is now relying on it for what seems like a crowd pleaser. He may come
unstuck though as the new build estates tend to be higher bands though even then you can find questionable decisions like one near me with a road of F’s and one E for no discernible reason.

They’re taking £100 per week from your bank account throughout the winter months.

The council tax bands are a farce and not fit for purpose. On my street where the houses are all the same every other house is a band D, mine for some reason is Band E. I’ve contested this and even someone who is professional in this area couldn’t get it changed. The next street where again all the houses are like ours, everyone is a band D.

Why go as far as Band D, where I live this band is mainly 4 bed detached in decent areas and quite affluent, a waste of taxpayers money.

A moment please to consider the needy owners of this 900k 4 bed 3 bath Band C. Let us all give thanks to Mr Burnham for helping them keep the lights on: Thanks Mr B!
