To think that mismatched Christmas serveware is acceptable?

Over the past few years, I have started picking up random bits of Christmas themed serveware for Christmas buffets etc. We’ve accumulated quite a few bits now and DH thinks it looks messy as none of it matches (it’s all a mixture of green, red, gold and cream but from different sets.

I like the fact that it doesn’t match (it reminds me of my grandma’s stuff as a child!). What would you think?

Sounds lovely & homely.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/10/2026 13:45

Right now, I am struggling to think of anything I would care less about on Christmas Day. Obviously, your husband's troubles must all be small ones.

AlwaysExtraHot · 27/10/2026 13:52

He is welcome to sort the Christmas serveware if yours upsets him so much.
How much Christmas work does he do?

Benjithedog · 27/10/2026 13:53

Of course it is

Reinga · 27/10/2026 13:55

I love mismatched Christmas crockery and everyone sitting at different heights around the table on the "emergency chairs". It feels cosy.

Tryagain26 · 27/10/2026 13:55

It sounds lovely. I like mismatched crockery

IamEarthymama · 27/10/2026 13:55

I would tell him about the time that IamEarthymama served Christmas lunch in dog bowls, that'll show him what he could be going through.
i swear my wife and kids will churn that story out over my death bed!

nomas · 27/10/2026 13:56

I think it would be very expensive to buy a full festive, colourful set of everything you need that matches.

It makes sense that you add to your collection as time goes on.

Sorry but I would not have eaten that! Even if you had washed out the dog bowls in boiling water.

LadyHexham · 27/10/2026 13:57

Sounds great

How silly.

LadyHexham · 27/10/2026 13:58

Of course he can always go and buy what he thinks will be better.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 27/10/2026 13:59

It adds to the charm.

LatteLady · 27/10/2026 13:59

Tell him it is a Harlequin set and to jog on... Sounds lovely and each piece will become more special in the years to come!

Catza · 27/10/2026 13:59

Mismatched crockery is fine but if you "started picking it up" over the last few years, I am wondering if your husband thinks you actually now have picked up way more than it may be reasonable to own. Could it be what he is trying to communicate?

Hyroplate · 27/10/2026 14:01

This one of those posts where I realise just how different we all are. I can't imagine caring about Christmas serving dishes, matching or not. I really can't imagine DH taking any interest at all.

Cascadia · 27/10/2026 14:01

No of course it is not acceptable and you have now dishonoured Christmas please immediately fall upon your carving knife.

Anything you want to eat your Christmas dinner from is perfectly fine. There's not some kind of rule about it, you know.

Jk987 · 27/10/2026 14:26

oh my god, crime of all crimes.

PeasOff · 27/10/2026 14:26

Complete non issue matching servewear does nothing to the taste of the food.

Gymnopedie · 27/10/2026 14:27

Tell him that this sort of Christmas only happens in the glossies and at the Palace. I think your serveware sounds lovely. And it's one day a year - if he doesn't like it, is he going to fund the matching set?

ChaToilLeam · 27/10/2026 14:28

Tell him to bugger off elsewhere and eat Findus crispy pancakes off matching tableware.

Coeliacsmum · 27/10/2026 14:32

It's entirely up to you but I do like things to match. If buying over several years I would just buy the same set gradually. Spode's Christmas Tree has been around since 1930s and has produced variations over the years but the original is still available as well.

ItalianChips · 27/10/2026 14:33

Mines all mismatched that I’ve accumulated over about 20 years, it looks nice. Your husband needs to get a life.
