Lots of people go to a sun destination mainly for sun bathing and the pool...most people wouldn't go to Turkey to spend their time wearing raincoats

Not in late Oct though, it’s full blown autumn and rainy season.

It's so disappointing when a holiday doesn't turn out as hoped. Hindsight is 20/20 vision and maybe Turkey in late October was a mistake, but here we are, so it's time to find ways to make the most of your situation. Remember you are on holiday and not putting up with all the crap we have to manage at home, so make the most of your downtime! Here are a couple of suggestions that have got us through dodgy weather holidays:

  1. Find some local attractions to visit
  2. Sign up for any activities offered by your hotel.
  3. See if there's a book share to find a holiday read.
  4. Get a pack of cards and learn some new card games to play together.
  5. Explore the local cuisine (and a drink or two for the parents!)
Enjoy your downtime with your family, and I'm sure you'll still make some wonderful memories. All the funniest family stories we have seem to come from what could've been terrible holidays!

This. Did you do any research about weather before you booked for the end of October? Most of the northern hemisphere is entering the autumn/winter period now. Fair enough the weather in Turkey or Greece or Spain isn’t generally as bad as the UK but it still isn’t going to be 30 degrees and sunny at the end of October…

To be fair a lot of people are now going to places like Turkey and Spain in the October week rather than the school summer holidays, because in summer there is a risk of it being 40 degrees, and in October there is a good chance of it being a pleasant low twenties.

Sorry your holiday is being brought down by the weather OP. As part of our honeymoon we booked a beautiful six senses villa with its own pool for 4 days and were hit by the tail end of a typhoon (I think? Maybe monsoon - Vietnam in December anyway) and were stuck in reading the entire time. Even running to dinner was an ordeal because the rain just bucketed. I still don't like to think about it. The fact is if you are ok with shitty weather, staying in the UK would be the best choice as we have plenty to do, but most people want a bit of sun.

Agatha1989 · Today 08:46

Explore Turkey! It’s a fantastic country with so much to see. Forget about sunbathing by the pool, go sightseeing, have some amazing food, immerse yourself in the culture.

Presumably holiday destinations that are reliably warm and sunny in the summer (Spain, Turkey, Greece) and therefore provide the swimming and sunbathing opportunities that many holidaymakers are looking for. Unfortunately summer prices are so expensive that people try to book this experience at cheaper times of year and find you can't do "summer holiday" activities at the end of October. It is such a shame if a lot of money has been spent.

For reliable October weather you need to travel at least to the Canary Islands or Egypt/Morocco. Possibly Cyprus. Otherwise long haul.

Normally I would agree with you but Cyprus has had awful floods.
We are off on a long haul multi destination tour, treated ourselves to an upgrade, only to find that El Niño has decimated some areas we are visiting. Some of the sites we were due to visit are having major renovations or repairs. It’s really disappointing but we don’t have to live with it and it’s our choice to go.

I think our idea of grabbing some winter sun can no longer be guaranteed and it’s becoming more risky as time goes on.

RampantIvy · Today 08:57

FrogsLoveRain · Today 00:02

What is a "summer holiday destination"?

You really need to ask?

boredwfh · Today 09:03

in future is recommend Morroco, not one people often think about but we’ve done Aqua Mirage in Marrakesh two years in a row in Oct and weather has been great. Slightly cooler at night but reliable 28-30 degrees in day. We did have a couple of days where it was overcast & one day it rained but only for an hour. But on those days we did excursions. If I go away in Oct I’d only pick somewhere like Morroco, Egypt, Tunisia or Canaries.

Livelovebehappy · Today 09:11

Seems excursions may be the way to go. I’ve just got back from Tenerife, where the weather is supposed to be decent still at this time of year. We had three out of ten sunny days. We just walked, drank and ate and slotted in a couple of sightseeing stuff, but I appreciate it’s not as easy with a couple of teens. Go on google and look at some forums for ideas for wet holidays in Turkey.

Pinana · Today 09:17

Wow, some people are being really mean here, I'm sorry.

I completely feel for you. Going on what you hope will be a warm sunny trip (warmer and sunnier than the UK at least) and having awful weather is really sad, even if you know there's a risk. I might expect a couple of days of rubbish weather, but you'd hope - not unreasonably - for some sunshine at least. We also looked at Turkey for this week, but for various reasons have ended up in a holiday cottage in Yorkshire! It's crap weather here too, but at least we're able to get cosy, read books, watch films, etc.

So I don't think you're unreasonable to be sad, but at the same time, you need to try and salvage the trip. Others have had some good ideas I see, but I'd be looking for some exciting places to eat, trips out, etc. I hope you manage to find something fun to amuse yourselves. Good luck.

ohfook · Today 09:21

I had a shitty rainy holiday once and it actually looking back turned out to be one of my loveliest memories although I wouldn’t have said so at the time. We spent so much time playing cards and other games together and I read four really lovely books while drinking wine. It’s probably the longest amount of time me and the kids have spent just relaxing in each other’s company. My only advice is just to lean into it. It does really sting when you think about the cost though.

2chocolateoranges · Today 09:25

Unfortunately that’s the chance you take when you holiday outside of the summer season.

we’ve been going to the Canary Islands in December for years and we have had rain there too. However I’d rather be in the Canary Islands with the rain than Scotland.

Parky04 · Today 09:32

moonraker0 · Today 08:14

In all fairness google says if you are on the Mediterranean coast side expect 24-26 degrees.

Yep, it's currently a lovely 25 degrees in Alicante. I always come here in late October and it's always been lovely! You have just been unlucky OP.

We went to Spain this June and it was so hot that you couldn't go out. The streets were empty. It was such a waste of money and has put me off paying to go abroad next year.

I think she means that she saved UP thousands of pounds
Rather than that the holiday was cheap.

@Fupoffyagrasshole

who brings rain coats with them on holiday?? No, it’s shit what’s going on for OP, end of.

TwinklyAmberSloth · Today 10:10

@greenleaf01 YABU.

No such thing as bad weather. Just bad clothes.

Find some suitable clothes and go have fun. Swimming, excursions etc...

It often rains in Turkey at the end of October but I bet its over 18C and warm ish??

RuinartRuination · Today 10:17

ChatGPT is your friend here. Tell it where you are, age of children, budget, interests etc and that it is raining and it’ll help with ideas.

PigeonsAmongstTheCats · Today 10:23

Fucking hell, there's so many self righteous comments here.

I'm sure OP knows, given she's living it.

It's absolutely natural to feel disappointed when you've spent a lot of money on a holiday and it isn't how you expected or hoped it to be.

Perhaps tell us where you are and somebody may have some suggestions of fun things you could do?

PepsiBook · Today 10:28

Were you not aware that weather in Turkey in almost November is not that great?
Turkey has a huge abundance of day trips/things to do with teens extremely cheaply. Can you not arrange some of those if it's too cold for the beach?

TheBrambleDormouse · Today 10:32

Well you're there now so make the most of it I'd say! Get some things booked and enjoy the culture and other things you can't do in the UK.

I was disappointed enough in a UK holiday in July when it was absolutely cracking the flags up North. Went four hours south to a beautiful destination but it was definitely long sleeves weather!

I do. We once had a very rainy holiday in Majorca over spring half term. We felt sorry for all the holiday makers looking miserable in cafes and bars because they ha dn't brought any rainwear.

We managed to make the best of it and extended our car hire to ten days from the original three and explored a lot of the island.

Well yeah we often go to Spain in October take rain coats

pretty much every holiday I’d take them just in case

HPFA · Today 10:49

It's really becoming more difficult to plan holidays abroad - go in summer and you risk the heat being intolerable, go earlier or later and you risk being rained off.

End of September is probably the safest bet - went to Avignon this year and it was around 28-31 - which in Southern French cities is very pleasant.

babasaclover · Today 10:51

OneoftheWeddingPeople · Yesterday 22:26

Just don’t understand these numerous threads by people upset that summer holiday destinations are rainy in late October? The summer season ends in September for a reason.

I’ve been turkey few times in November and had 25 degrees. If you go far enough over weather is fabulous bit is not just a summer location

Lordofmyflies · Today 10:52

I’m sorry OP but it comes down to research. After October, for short haul sun you need to be Canaries, Egypt or Morocco. Greece and Turkey just aren’t reliable. We were in Malta early October and towards the end of the week the weather was cooling too.

potenial · Today 10:56

Always a shame when stuff doesn't work out the way you expected, especially expensive things!

You need to find a way for everyone to enjoy it and make the most of it. If you've had holidays before, what was yours and the kids favourite parts? Playing games together is usually nice on holidays (uno, cards etc), swimming can still happen in the rain (often with much more hilarity and memories made than if it were sunny all the time), is there a possibility of a day trip to do an indoor activity, or a centre with bowling/climbing/cinema etc?
