I think your first sentence sums it up OP: “saved thousands of pounds”…..there is a reason that shorter-haul holidays are cheaper at this time of year. Hope the weather picks up for you all.

Surely OP means that she saved up £1000s to be able to go on holiday - saved as in, put in a savings account.

It's a shame, as so many traditional holiday destinations are becoming too hot for the summer holidays. People are seeing stories of wildfires in the summer, and it puts them off.

So October bookings are increasing, but you do then have that risk of wet weather. I've taken the risk and been mostly lucky, but personally, I'd rather it was raining than 40c.

The school holidays dates are rubbish, really, there is not a good time for going to the Mediterranean. Maybe if you get a week in May, but we don't.

What is a "summer holiday destination"?

Do you really not know, is there any way from the words that you work it out?

Purplecatshopaholic · Today 08:06

Aww, sorry to hear op. Reminds me of the time I went to the Algarve and it was the worst weather they’d had there in many years, lol. The Algarve in the pissing rain is no fun. I think you need to recalibrate your expectations. Sitting in the hotel room being miserable will defo make for a shit holiday. When it happened to us, we hired a car and got out and actually visited the area rather than sit on the beach. We saw so much of the history of the area, visited places and restaurants we would never have seen otherwise. I feel your pain though, but you can make the best of it.

Soannoyingititchessobad · Today 08:06

We’ve been to Turkey nearly every half term and although we’ve had the odd morning of rain it has always been sunny- have you checked the forecast and sure it’s not going to clear up?

if it keeps raining I can 100% recommend going for a Turkish bath. They are 2 hours of heaven and not expensive. Not for the kids, but it might at least give you some respite.

what are the other families in the hotel doing in the rain? Are there any indoor games etc you can all participate in? I know this isn’t what you went on holiday for but it’s better than just sitting around your room

sorry to hear that a holiday you’ve saved hard for hasn’t worked out well.

Lucie11 · Today 08:08

Ah, also in Turkey and so disappointed! Have been away this time for the last few years to Greece and Southern Spain and apart from the odd bit of cloud or a shower, it has been gorgeous. This is proper baked in rain with no let up.
Fortunately, there is a spa, an indoor pool and a good gym but I can do all that at home!
Yes, it’s a risk but I think this is quite unusual.
Am grateful for the all inclusive bar and restaurants! And no work…

OneoftheWeddingPeople · Today 08:08

We have so much information now though. I’m a total sun seeker if we are looking for southern europe
sun at an odd time honestly it’s worth not booking at all until you get the proper forecast. Then if it’s bad you don’t bother going. Ok it’s more expensive but not that much more at this time of year and then you pay nothing if you don’t go. It’s the only way if you are looking for October sun as it’s so variable.

Fupoffyagrasshole · Today 08:11

How would better weather mean more to do? Why can’t you wear rain coats and go out and do things anyway?

surely the only difference is lack of swimming and sunbathing

pinkparenting · Today 08:11

Buy a brolly and go out and enjoy yourself anyway. If there is anything naturey near you that it can be really nice to experience nature in the rain as its something we rarely do.

You might be taking shorter excursions outside but you can still get out and enjoy yourself.

Just change your focus of what you can do and get on with it.

Yes its easier if its sunny, but its not, so making the best of it is a better use of your money than spending your time feeling sad. Maybe allow yourself set time each day to be pissed off about it, then make yourself stop having those thoughts and think about what you can do that day to make the best of it.

Dryrobe45 · Today 08:12

I feel for you OP. Years ago (pre marriage & kids) an ex-bf and I booked an expensive week in Portugal and we had torrential rain the entire week. Every. Single.Day. There wasn’t much to do where we were based, so we spent the week pottering around the local town and just hanging around in our accom. It was the longest week and worst holiday I’ve ever had.
I’ve never been to Turkey but I know it’s full of history. Could you hire a car & go to museums? Churches? Historic sights? (All of which are actually a lot more pleasant to visit when it’s not roasting hot). And then round each day off with a nice meal.

Just don’t understand these numerous threads by people upset that summer holiday destinations are rainy in late October? The summer season ends in September for a reason.

In all fairness google says if you are on the Mediterranean coast side expect 24-26 degrees.

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · Today 08:15

It rained every day on my honeymoon, which was in the UK at the height of summer (so not surprising really 😆). We spent a lot of time holed up in pubs doing crosswords!

NameChangeScot · Today 08:15

There's a reason why it's so much cheaper to go in October, the weather is unpredictable.

Turkey in October usually has temps in the mid 20s, sea warm enough to swim in and an average 7 hours of sun a day. Its cheaper and avoids the gruelling temps of the summer. I've been many times at this time of year and never had more than a shower. So its usually a very good choice. The OP has been unlucky is all. Not everything is someone's fault.

pinkparenting · Today 08:15

MrMurphysComeuppance · Today 07:30

That's an awful shame, you've been unlucky, because at this time of year the weather could go either way, but you haven't 'saved' thousands of pounds on the holiday you picked, have you? You've paid the going rate for a place that relies heavily on sunshine at a time of year when there might not be any and there is little else to do because lots of tourist based businesses have closed up for the quiet season.

You are getting exactly what you paid for, I'm afraid. With a big dose of bad luck thrown in.

I took OP as meaning that she had saved up thousands to pay for the holiday, as that makes sense in the context of her post. Ie, I spent loads on this holiday and now its ruined by the weather.

PassMeTheCookies · Today 08:16

Oh God, I’d be absolutely gutted too. I went to that hotel in June and it was exceptional. I saw the videos on the Facebook page yesterday of the weather and it’s so sad, so you have my total sympathy.

The hotel arcade killed some time for us, we did bowling and had some time indoors. Also, a trip down to Sarigerme (£5 in a taxi) if your teens like shopping/branded items. USC on the main strip are great quality.

I really hope you see some improvement to be able to enjoy some outdoor time. It really is a fab hotel.

Book football academy with Ollie too if they like football - my son loved it; and I imagine they’ll still run in the rain.

In a lot of places, particularly around the eastern Med, you can typically expect a day or two with some showers at this time of year and lower temperatures than in August and September however there are/have been some really bad storms going on for days. We've just been to Crete. Two and half days of storm followed by a week of mid twenties daytime temperatures and sun. The storm was not typical October weather.

DailyEnergyCrisis · Today 08:20

Ah sorry to hear this op.
I can recommend Canaries for Oct half term- we’re in Lanzarote and it’s around 26 degrees, a bit overcast but dry. Can get good self catering accommodation fairly inexpensively (we always do this as nice to have a pool to yourself and cheaper than hotel).

Hope you find some good food, indoor pools/spa, maybe a bit of shopping- knock off designer stuff for the teens.

HowHaveYouFoundThis · Today 08:28

End of Oct in Europe is risky weather wise

you need to go a bit further to be in with more chance of sunshine at the time or wait and make a v last min booking

Naijamama · Today 08:29

We're in Turkey at the minute (Marmaris area). Yes it's bad weather, but still plenty to do. Turkish baths, indoor markets, get some playing cards, find some cards and grab a spot in the hotel bar, and play? It's unlucky, and possibly like you we're priced out of going in summer. Got to make the best of it though. The shops, atteactions and bars are very much open for business.

Mrtumblestit · Today 08:30

That’s so disappointing but weather is one thing you can’t control. We’ve just got back from the canaries. We had one poor weather day, didn’t see the sun much and quite a bit of cloud but was at least warm. We still had a lovely time together though.

Lots of people go to a sun destination mainly for sun bathing and the pool...most people wouldn't go to Turkey to spend their time wearing raincoats

iamnotalemon · Today 08:31

I do understand how rubbish it is to spend all that money and get crappy weather, but you need to turn it around and try and enjoy it.

Charlenedickens · Today 08:39

This is always disappointing, so why don’t you make the best of it, there is lots of sight seeing to be done in turkey, which isn’t weather dependent, so plan lots of stuff like that, where abouts are you? We can then advise.

you can also go for lots of lovely lunches and dinners, as well as sight seeing and have a great time,
