This. Did you do any research about weather before you booked for the end of October? Most of the northern hemisphere is entering the autumn/winter period now. Fair enough the weather in Turkey or Greece or Spain isn’t generally as bad as the UK but it still isn’t going to be 30 degrees and sunny at the end of October…

This is the issue. I've known people in the past who have booked for places like Turkey and other summer destinations believing it to be a "hot country" and not checking weather expectations for the time of year.
We have had great weather in Morocco in October half term but not as hot as summer (which is partly why we went in October).

IStillHearTheWaves · Today 07:26

Always helps to have a plan B in case of bad weather- it can happen in summer too. There must be other things to do or places to visit?

Agree that the Canaries is the safest option for A/W sun, but even that isn't guaranteed.

MrMurphysComeuppance · Today 07:30

That's an awful shame, you've been unlucky, because at this time of year the weather could go either way, but you haven't 'saved' thousands of pounds on the holiday you picked, have you? You've paid the going rate for a place that relies heavily on sunshine at a time of year when there might not be any and there is little else to do because lots of tourist based businesses have closed up for the quiet season.

You are getting exactly what you paid for, I'm afraid. With a big dose of bad luck thrown in.

MyballsareSandy2015 · Today 07:33

I would have expected better weather there … I know it’s not a winter destination but it’s only late October. Unlucky OP. Hope the food and drink is good.

We had the opposite problem - went to turkey in early June a couple of years ago expecting mid to late 20s and it ended up at 45 degrees. Couldn’t explore or do much other than sit in the pool/sea.

MrMurphysComeuppance · Today 07:34

My DH has had to go to both Istanbul and Cairo on business at this time of year and was amazed at how cold and/or wet the weather was. In Turkey he had to go out and buy himself a coat and some boots as none of the stuff he'd taken was warm enough and the only shoes he'd taken got absolutely soaked through.

I've been in May and it was perfect. Went back to the same place in July and it was unbearable. I spend the whole fortnight under an umbrella and still got burnt.

What is a "summer holiday destination"?

A place where the good weather is in the Summer months ?
🤔

zoeslim · Today 07:37

Better off staying in UK these days

Get hold of Serkan at come n drive and go on a full day buggy excursion and he’ll take you to the Lycian way which is amazing history, doesn’t matter if it’s raining! Wear sports kit cos you get muddy! Best day ever over there! Or book mr animals day, water fights and kids friendly! Spend a day in a hamaam, go up babadag in the cable cars, the dolmus will take you. Plus it’s Tuesday so the market will be on in Fethiye! Loads to do round that hotel!

Great advice!

MidlifeMiseryGuts · Today 07:39

I’ve had a couple of years where this has happened too and it’s a horrid feeling. My DH and I have a running joke that we always bring the British weather with us.

Tbh outside of June-mid September it’s always a risk. And the resorts towns are generally closed too. Better to do a city break with a hotel that has a pool in these autumn months so you can have the best of both worlds but lots to do if weather is grim.

Just don’t understand these numerous threads by people upset that summer holiday destinations are rainy in late October? The summer season ends in September for a reason.

Are you deliberately trying to be horrible or are you having a bad day? Clearly this lady from her message has saved and come here on holiday, why are you trying to rub it in?

Ginmonkeyagain · Today 07:41

It's late October, Turkey has late Autimn weather too.

For late October I would choose a more city type break where the weather does not matter so much.

No need to be unkind.

I think she means she’s saved up thousands of pounds to be able to go in first place

IdleGossip · Today 07:44

October is more unreliable weather-wise but can stil be amazing. We used to go away often in October when the kids were smaller, admittedly a couple of weeks earlier as the break in Scotland is earlier than in England. We went to Portugal mostly but also Canaries, mainland Spain, Greece. Out of all those years we had one year where the weather was not great and even then, it didn't rain solidly for a week.

They're hardly being horrible - they've got a valid point. It's unfortunate about the weather and ruined holiday, but prior research is a must.

LimeFish · Today 07:47

If it makes you feel any better I went to Turkey in peak summer, didn't save any money, and it was 43C+ the whole time, made me feel really ill and we all had to spend most of the time in our hotel room in the Aircon. I was sad.

Roselilly36 · Today 07:51

That’s a shame, it happens now and then, we had one week in Lanzarote that was really windy, rainy and overcast all week, thank goodness the following week we had really great weather. We only ever go in winter and other than then. We have always had great weather.

Hopefully you have nice food & drink, and some entertainment at the hotel, is there an indoor pool you could use?

nomorecheese · Today 07:53

OP I feel you. We’re in Turkey too. We were aware of the risks and I looked at the forecast with mounting horror last week! We’ve had a couple of nice days but today is very showery. I’ve got 10 and 13 year old boys but luckily the attached water park is open so they’re happy. It is disappointing though. I’ve told DH we’re going to Spain in the summer hols next year!!

Fortuity · Today 07:54

I guess that one advantage of the facf that we have mainly holidayed in the UK is that we don't set out minds on wanting the weather to be good - so we tend to stay in places where there are indoor attractions and activities, or go for outdoor activities where the weather doesn't particularly matter.

Are there any indoor activities where you are, places to go and see etc? Clutching at straws a bit, but it can be fun to swim in the rain.

Puddleduck2013 · Today 07:55

I feel for you…we went to Bodrum last week of September and it was very variable weather. I wouldn’t go that late in the season again.

Hope you find some fun things to do.

Existentialistic · Today 07:56

I think your first sentence sums it up OP: “saved thousands of pounds”…..there is a reason that shorter-haul holidays are cheaper at this time of year. Hope the weather picks up for you all.

SiegfriedSassoon · Today 07:58

We went to Spain this June and it was so hot that you couldn't go out. The streets were empty. It was such a waste of money and has put me off paying to go abroad next year.

She clearly meant she’d saved up thousands of pounds not that it was a cheap holiday for her.

Motherofacertainage · Today 08:03

Try to see it as a positive. As others have said, in the summer Turkey can be so hot you can’t get out and about. We went all inclusive to Antalya and I was frustrated that we didn’t do any sight seeing or excursions because the heat was so overwhelming. Even just having a local walk and a mooch was uncomfortable . Alternatively you could resort to daytime drinking!!
